NSA spying undermines
separation of powers

USA Today, by Glenn Harlan Reynolds

Original Article

Most of the worry about the National Security Agency´s bulk interception of telephone calls, e-mail and the like has centered around threats to privacy. And, in fact, the evidence suggests that if you´ve got a particularly steamy phone- or Skype-sex session going on, it just might wind up being shared by voyeuristic NSA analysts. But most Americans figure, probably rightly, that the NSA isn´t likely to be interested in their stuff. (Anyone who hacks my e-mail is automatically punished, by having to read it.) There is, however, a class of people who can´t take that disinterest for granted: members of Congress

Muhammad Ali was exhausted as he clambered from a plane on a tarmac in Tanzania as the waiting throng exploded with enthusiasm. “ALI, ALI, ALI,” the crowd chanted. By all appearances, the former champion’s arrival in Dar es Salaam looked familiar enough: exactly like the humanitarian missions to which the boxer had become accustomed. But this was different, and Ali—who had been doing charity work in India the day before—was groggy. Worst of all, he was unsure about why he was even there. In a plan that seemed like a good one when it was hatched, U.S. State Department officials were

Iranian Poet Hanged

Iranian authorities have reportedly hanged Hashem Shaabani, a poet which the regime has accused of being “an enemy of God.” His execution should do more than anything else to provide an opportunity for Secretary of State John Kerry and UN Ambassador Samantha Power to embrace moral clarity, for it does more than anything to show the undeniable cruelty of the Islamic Republic and its murderous ideology. There is a tendency in the State Department—the administration does not matter—to repress discussion of human rights out of fear that to discuss them will risk progress on harder national-security issues like the nuclear deal

The Texas Democratic Party, and the national Democrats along with them, have a racist strategy to flip Texas from reliably Republican to purple or even blue. Talk to any Democrat leader here or nationally and they will admit that they have no intention to change or moderate any of their policies. They are not going to back away from their high-tax, anti-business policies, and they are not going to moderate on abortion or lend any meaningful support on the Second Amendment (Wendy Davis’ unconvincing conversion on open carry only serving to reinforce the Democrats’ party position). They won’t even step

Next up on the potential Breitbart News chopping block: Larry O’Connor, who also hosts WMAL’s morning radio program. Mysteriously, his byline hasn’t been seen for two months. In addition, his Twitter bio makes zero mention of Breitbart News. Wouldn’t a writer be proud to say where he or she worked? Well, where is O’Connor’s byline? According to sources associated with the outlet who wish to remain anonymous, O’Connor has been crawling across glass (so to speak) to get out of his contract, and if the stars align just right it may soon happen. Officially, he has worked for the company since the

Obama is having a grand old time with his socialist buddy President Francois Hollande of France on his visit, and for the first time ever, Americans will get a view of just how much a State dinner costs them. It took thirteen months for the State Department to respond to the request for the costs of such dinners, but here they are! CBS News has obtained the Office of Protocol’s expense calculations for the first five state dinners of the Obama presidency. Nov. 24, 2009 – State dinner for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India. $572,187.36 May 19, 2010 – State dinner for President

President Obama has a plan to connect 99 percent of U.S. schools to high-speed Internet within five years without adding "a dime to the deficit" and "without waiting for Congress." It sounds too good to be true, but the administration has a trick up its sleeve: a federal program that collects fees on American phone bills and uses the revenue to fund Internet access at schools and libraries in rural and low-income areas. The program, known as E-Rate, was created in 1996 and is administered by the Federal Communications Commission as part of the Universal Service Fund. The program is currently capped

Most people accept the notion that politicians don’t always tell the truth. Some lies are harmless enough; others more consequential. Lyndon Johnson skirted the truth when he promised during the 1964 presidential campaign not to send any more American troops to fight a land war in Southeast Asia. He knew then that American intervention would eventually be necessary, but the lie helped him win the election. After the election, Johnson sent additional troops, more American lives were lost and the war escalated. Richard Nixon claimed he knew nothing about Watergate. “I am not a crook,” he said. Lies. In 1976, Jimmy Carter promised

Assistant U.S. attorneys mocked Nagin’s forgetfulness and finger-pointing. Defense attorney Richard Jenkins slammed prosecutors as misleading and their witnesses as unreliable criminals. Prosecutor Richard Pickens led off the morning listing the benefits Nagin is accused of raking in as part of various bribery schemes, outlined in the conspiracy indictment, the first of 21 counts against him: Family vacations to Jamaica and Hawaii Cell phones Jet travel to Chicago, Las Vegas, and New York. Some of our snow is said to be missing, though you couldn’t tell it if you looked around in one of the harshest winters in decades. The sky has been falling nearly everywhere, and 67 percent of North America now lies under a blanket of white. It’s a thin blanket in places, but it’s almost twice the size as this time last year. Life is particularly tough on the Great Lakes. Lake Superior is 92 percent frozen over, breaking the February record set two decades ago, and it’s getting worse, unless you’re an ice fisherman, in which case it’s getting better. They’re

This isn’t exactly a new topic, I regret to say. For weeks there’s been national conversation — and the requisite component of shouting — over the Obama White House’s determination to stream the legislative music of its choice. Other people’s choices? Those of the states, say, or even of Congress? Sorry, the president can’t hear a word you’re saying. He’s rocking to his own beat. Over just the last couple of days came two more instances of lofty Obaman disdain for others’ views. Atty. Gen. Eric Holder led the way, pushing the federal government toward authoritative affirmation of a question the White

Obamacare’s $70 billion pay cut

In his State of the Union address, President Obama urged Congress to “give America a raise.” Well, it turns out that Obama is giving America a $70 billion annual pay cut, courtesy of Obamacare. That is the overlooked nugget in the new Congressional Budget Office report detailing the economic costs of Obamacare. While much attention has been paid to the report’s finding that Obamacare will reduce employment by as much as 2.5 million workers, buried on page 117 (Appendix C) is this bombshell: “CBO estimates that the ACA will cause a reduction of roughly 1 percent in aggregate labor compensation over

It was the perfect Christmas tableau at the Allen-Farrow household: There sat Mia and nine of her children around the dinner table. There were two turkeys, an abundance of side dishes, and in the middle, a carved angel. In came Woody Allen with a holiday greeting. “Pardon me while I puke,” he said, then went off to the kitchen to juice apples. Long before the scandals — Woody taking off with Mia’s adopted teen daughter Soon-Yi, Mia accusing Woody of molesting their 7-year-old daughter, Dylan — the Allen-Farrow family was regarded as the ultimate cosmopolitan clan, a multiracial brood of 11 children,

ASHINGTON — Michelle Obama says a gay University of Missouri football player is “an inspiration to all of us.” The first lady took to Twitter on Monday to comment on Michael Sam, the all-American college player who announced Sunday that he is gay. Mrs. Obama says she “couldn’t be prouder” of Sam’s courage, both on and off the field. The tweet was signed “-mo,” which is how the White House marks messages personally sent by the first lady. Sam could become the first openly homosexual player in the NFL. He’s scheduled to participate in the league’s weeklong scouting camp, where potential draftees

BAGHDAD — A group of Sunni militants attending a suicide bombing training class at a camp north of Baghdad were killed on Monday when their commander unwittingly conducted a demonstration with a belt that was packed with explosives, army and police officials said. The militants belonged to a group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, which is fighting the Shiite-dominated army of the Iraqi government, mostly in Anbar Province. But they are also linked to bomb attacks elsewhere and other fighting that has thrown Iraq deeper into sectarian violence.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin´s long fall in popularity back home has hit a new low, one that could spell an end to the buzz she´s considering a presidential bid in 2016. In a new poll, she would lose a head-to-head contest with Democrat Hillary Clinton, 44 percent to 43 percent. Worse, she doesn´t even lead among those considering a GOP primary bid. Sen. Rand Paul is tops among Alaska Republicans at 15 percent followed by Palin, who is tied with Sen. Ted Cruz at 13 percent; Jeb Bush at 12 percent, Mike Huckabee, 11 percent; New Jersey Gov. Chris

The latest Kentucky poll found that Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, is trailing his Democratic challenger, Kentucky Secretary of State Allison Lundergan Grimes, by 4 percentage points. Forty-six percent of those polled said they would vote for Ms. Grimes, who has campaigned primarily on bringing jobs to Kentucky and raising the minimum wage, while just 42 percent said they would vote for Mr. McConnell, the Courier-Journal reported. “When he says that raising the minimum wage is the last thing he wants to do, Mitch McConnell apparently thinks that over 60 percent of Kentuckians are wrong. President Obama has broken many promises. One that he has not broken is his boast that he would "fundamentally transform America." He and his fellow Democrats are on the verge of doing just that by turning us into a nation of loafers. A loafer is an idle person who lives off others. Barack Obama seemingly has no problem with such people. He might even relate to them. He does have a serious problem with his own work ethic, and finds work boring. (snip) But Obama and his Democratic Party allies seem to be gleeful about the rise of the loafer class.

Powerful winds in the Pacific Ocean, which have driven surface heat deep underwater, could be the reason behind the current ‘pause’ in global warming. This is according to a joint Australian and U.S. study which has looked at why there has been a slowdown in the planet’s global average surface temperature over the past decade. Their research shows that trade winds in central and eastern parts of the Pacific have caused warm surface water to sink to the ocean´s depths, reducing the amount of heat in the atmosphere. Last year, scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the pace of

From its inception, the strategy behind the Obama administration’s implementation of ObamaCare has been simple: to frontload the benefits and postpone the pain and costs of this massive government intrusion into the private sector for as long as possible. This deceitful approach enabled President Obama run for reelection in 2012 on the spurious promise of extending insurance coverage to the poor and those with pre-existing conditions without being held accountable for the problems with the law that would only become apparent in his second term. Over the course of the last year, as the president’s signature accomplishment debuted with a
