´Food desert´ fallacy shocks liberals
American Thinker, by Thomas Lifson

It turns out that you can bring produce sections to poor neighborhoods, but you can´t get poor people to eat healthier food. This comes as a shock to liberals who believe in the comprehensive theory of victimology -- that all problems afflicting people who fall into ethnic, sexual, or other identities regarded as victims are due to external factors, not to their own choices. (snip)The deranged premise behind the entire "food desert" theory was that crass corporations were bypassing the opportunity to sell healthy foods to poor people out of malice, or at best ignorance. The idea that local people

the libs never do any fact checking. they just assume things and are most often wrong.

One would think after all this exposure they would tighten up their claims, but they don´t.

At this point who gives credit to any newspaper report. They have lost their credit.

Eating habits are cultural in nature. Until quite recently in human terms the working poor needed to consume a great number of calories in order to do physical labor. Today even most outdoor blue collar jobs involve power assisted tools that have reduced those demands. But having been raised to appreciate the calorie dense nature of fried starch, people find they still like the taste of such foods. The out of season broccoli that grannie found too expensive for the calories it brought to the equation, not so much.

When Michelle was braying about all them Food Deserts, I laughed; the reason the fruits and vegetables are not in the ghetto markets, is because the poor folks want to spend their food stamps on chips and soda.

It has been shocking to me the foods that folks won´t or don´t eat. Around here you can´t even give away squash unless it is pumpkin(to be made into pie). Sweet potatoes(again, pies or a sugary casserole with addition of either marshmallow or pineapple, but always with lots of sugar, never just plain baked) are a biggie along with white potatoes(fried with onions or mashed). Collards or turnip greens with smoked meat added. Never plain kale(a friend,"I have never eaten kale") or greens always heavily seasoned with usually smoked meat. Heavy pork eaters in this area. But it does amaze that Libs think that if they put a Trader Joe´s in a depressed area that somehow the folks will buy. They just won´t. And TJ´s would be a fool to waste their money to even try.

Years ago some rich rock and roll friends sponsored a feed the homeless event.
Much food was given away that day.
Including beans and franks, healthy vegetables, and salads.
When the beans and franks ran out the homeless left.
Leaving behind almost all of the vegetables and salads.

That´s an example of the market place at work.
People will make their own decisions.

Those people that try to override market place decisions,
no matter how well meaning, are oppressors.

Liberals cannot figure out that the reason for the ‘Food desert’ in certain neighborhoods is because the produce has a short shelf life and doesn’t sell. Duh!!!

If there was a market for it, it would be there. That’s the reason Slim Jims rather than bananas rate a display at the cash register. They sell…and they don’t turn brown after two days.

I live in what many might consider a "blighted area" and my neighborhood grocery store serves a high percentage of recent arrivals from Spanish-speaking countries. The produce section always has a goodly and fresh supply of fruit & veg, and I love shopping there. I have visited other stores in other areas where the produce is crap because no one ever buys it -- but the frozen prepared food, cookies and baked goods fly off the shelves. Folks make their own choices.

Smart people respond logically to reality. But whip-smart liberals simply turn reality around [like Obama´s mouthed support for the middle class] and/or ignore it. The invention, and continued infliction upon us, of first the League and now the UN is just one example: Never - won - once. 100% failure rate.

Fresh food also tends to cost more and spoils if it isn´t eaten in a timely manner. In that regard it is not irrational for people to buy things that cost less, have more calories, and don´t spoil when their money is limited. Were I poor, I would buy many more frozen vegetables instead of fresh for that reason. Changing demand to food that is healthier is going to take a lot of effort that I don´t think anyone is willing to expend.

The Health police today rounded up 46 individuals they deemed "actively participating in an unhealthy life style". The people were transported to a holding facility where they were fed only raw carrots, tofu sticks and garbanzo beans for three weeks. They were then marched overland on a four day hike to a "health Camp" specifically designed to get them to comply with the new government demands for healthy bodies for all citizens. Although three people died en-route to Health Camp, the overall effort was praised as being good for the whole of society.

A spokes person for the Health Police, Ms. Susanne Bennet-Chalmers-Gracer was quick to add, there are more round-ups of unhealthy people planned. When asked about her own appearance as an obviously overweight person, she reminded the reporters sternly, there is a "difference between fat and fluffy".

All the media persons present had to undergo a body mass evaluation before leaving the meeting room. Two failed to pass and were escorted to the Health police pre-transport facility. Few media members thought it strange the reporter who asked Ms. Bennet-Chalmers-Gracer the offensive, and somewhat degrading question was one of the two reporters who were taken, although he looked to be in perfect health.

This reporter strongly praises the government efforts to get healthier citizens. We should all feel grateful our government overseers are taking such an interest in helping us all achieve perfection according to the government standards.
