91 Minutes With Philippe Reines
New York Magazine, by Reid Cherlin

If you come out in the next 3 minutes,” the e-mail reads, “just look for the SUV trapped in 1983 and rocking to ‘Gloria.’” Philippe Reines is BlackBerrying from an Uber car idling outside Union Station in Washington, D.C. Sure enough, there’s the black Suburban, shining in the afternoon sun amid many impatient taxis. Reines, Hillary Clinton’s most visible spokesman and the guardian of her public persona, is sprawled in the back passenger seat with the window a few inches down. “We’re going to drive in circles,” he says. In person, Reines is none of the things his reputation for

Reines is a weasel. A snarky one, to boot.

Considering his antipathy for Michael Hastings, Reines and/or Hillary would be at the top of my list for suspicion re Hastings´s strange and untimely death.

As my husband said, a Mercedes does not jackknife before it hits a tree unless it explodes. An eyewitness, from whom nothing more seems to have been heard, reported almost immediately that the car jackknifed, exploded, and then went on to hit the street-side tree.

We now know that vehicles´ computers can be controlled by external means. And his car was most probably handled by valet parkers while he was clubbing prior to his fatal accident. Valet parkers in Hollywood take cars and park them on various lots and side streets while they are in their custody.

It wouldn´t have been difficult for someone to plant an explosive device on Hastings´s car while it was in valet parking.

GOP´s 2016 Hopefuls
Begin to Take Their Lanes
Wall Street Journal, by Gerald Seib    Original Article

Presidential campaigns are long and complicated, and getting more so, but they all start in the same way: Hopefuls jockey for position in a handful of lanes that open up for specific types of candidates their party seems willing to consider. That is precisely what is happening now as Republicans begin serious contemplation of the 2016 presidential race. The party is changing and soul-searching after two straight presidential defeats, and its coming nominating contest may well be the most crowded and wide-open in a generation. To sort through that forming crowd, think of the potential candidates as falling into five different lanes.

When it comes to mocking a sitting president, the world’s most dangerous leaders have apparently taken up the traditional role played by late-night comics. It started last August when the 11-year-old son of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad took to Facebook with this message for President Obama: “I just want them to attack sooo much, because I want them to make the mistake of beginning something that they don’t know the end of it.” A few days later, Papa Assad tells Charlie Rose that Obama runs a “social media administration.” Next came Vladimir Putin. It wasn’t enough to annex Crimea. In an address to

President Obama just endorsed Brian

President Obama´s endorsement on Monday of Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) in a Democratic primary is a big deal. Until now, Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) sported the most notable endorsement in the race: That of late senator Daniel Inouye (D), whose dying wish was for her to succeed him. But if there´s one endorsement that could carry as much or more weight in what promises to be a contentious campaign, it´s Obama´s. The broad unpopularity that has has turned Obama into a political albatross in many states does not extend to Hawaii, where he grew up and enjoys iconic status. Obama

Making up good news about Obamacare

The Obama administration is celebrating that it has achieved its (downwardly revised) goal of signing up more than 6 million Americans for Obamacare by 11:59 p.m. March 31. Mission accomplished! Not quite. The administration has not revealed how many of those 6 million people have paid their premiums. If you have not paid, you have not actually “enrolled.” It’s like putting merchandise in your Amazon cart but never clicking “buy.” Besides, the number that matters is not how many Americans signed up for Obamacare but rather how many previously uninsured Americans signed up for Obamacare. By that standard, Obamacare may be

President Obama sees himself following in the footsteps of the creator of the modern Democrats, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who launched the “New Deal” in the 1930s to protect the interests of working and middle class Americans. Among numerous other programs, Roosevelt’s New Deal included Social Security for the elderly, a massive program of public works for the unemployed, subsidies for farmers and government recognition of labor unions to raise wages for private sector workers. Shortly after Obama’s 2008 election, Time ran a cover story picturing Obama as the next FDR with the title “The New New Deal.” President Obama and his

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- They were words heard around the world as investigators searched for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane. Weeks ago, Malaysian authorities said the last message from the airplane cockpit was, "All right, good night." The sign-off to air traffic controllers, which investigators said was spoken by the plane´s copilot, was among the few concrete details officials released in a mystery that´s baffled investigators since the Boeing 777 disappeared with 239 people aboard on March 8. There´s only one problem. It turns out, it wasn´t true. On Monday, Malaysia´s Transport Ministry said the final voice transmission from the

Israeli Minister: Pollard

JERUSALEM -- A hard-line Israeli Cabinet minister says convicted spy Jonathan Pollard opposes being freed from a U.S. jail in exchange for Palestinians prisoners. Uri Ariel says people close to Pollard have told him that he opposes such a "shameful deal." Ariel, from the hard-line Jewish Home party, spoke to Army Radio on Tuesday. He says he, too, is against the release of "murderers" for Pollard. Talk of the possibility of Pollard´s early release has arisen as an incentive in the troubled Mideast peace negotiations. The idea is that if he is freed, Israel would make concessions and release more Palestinian prisoners.

SALT LAKE CITY— Utah earned an additional congressional seat following the 2010 census, and Republican state lawmakers in charge of the redistricting process used that opportunity to slice up the district of seven-term Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson into four parts. Matheson ran in the 4th District in 2012 and won, but just barely. He held off Republican Mia Love by fewer than 800 votes in the most expensive congressional race in state history. Now Matheson isn´t seeking re-election and the odds are a Republican will win the seat. Matheson has dismissed speculation that his decision to retire was spurred by fear he

In more than a decade of campaigns for the California Legislature, San Francisco mayor and secretary of state, state Sen. Leland Yee raised in excess of $5 million. Yet it was a campaign debt only a fraction of that amount that federal officials allege pulled the veteran politician into a sprawling sting operation. The 137-page FBI affidavit against Yee and more than 20 other defendants says the San Francisco Democrat’s focus on retiring a $70,000 campaign debt from his unsuccessful 2011 mayor’s race and raising money for his 2014 candidacy for secretary of state led him to accept bribes in return

Last week, the FBI received a lot of attention and praise from conservative sources for finally eliminating the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) from its website’s list of “hate crimes” resources. However, while a headline at Breitbart says the FBI “dumps [SPLC] as hate crimes resource,” and an article at The Daily Caller said the FBI was “breaking ties” with the SPLC, a public statement from the FBI and the agency’s own website indicate the removal may mean just that — removal from the site, not a diminishing of the relationship between the two organizations. Fear of flying is irrational but often incurable. Once the doors close on the cabin there is no escape. Your life is in the hands of the pilots together with the most complex machine ever devised for travel. You have no control. The requirement for you to submit to confinement is reinforced by accepting the first bag of peanuts. Irrational? Just look at the numbers. Last year 1.3 million

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Climate change is already having sweeping effects on every continent and throughout the world’s oceans, scientists reported Monday, and they warned that the problem is likely to grow substantially worse unless greenhouse emissions are brought under control. The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations group that periodically summarizes climate science, concluded that ice caps are melting, sea ice in the Arctic is collapsing, water supplies are coming under stress, heat waves and heavy rains are intensifying, coral reefs are dying, and fish and many other creatures are migrating toward the poles or

A National Labor Relations Board official has given the green light to Northwestern University football players to form a union. The March 26 decision by the NLRB´s Chicago regional director, Peter Sung Ohr, held that scholarship football players are "employees" for purposes of federal labor law. Ohr rejected the longstanding view of Northwestern and the National Collegiate Athletic Association that players are "student-athletes" rather than employees. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. WASHINGTON — LeBron James wants you to sign up for health coverage under Obamacare. So do Magic Johnson and Jonah Hill’s mom. Monday is (sort of) the deadline for Americans without employer-provided health coverage to sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act — the White House extended it so that anyone who’s begun to sign up by Monday can still complete the process by April 7 — and the final enrollment numbers will be an important test for a law intended to expand access for the uninsured. It’ll also be a test for the White House’s high-octane sales
