Opening Ceremony: Commentators
already threaten to ruin Olympics

Los Angeles Daily News, by Mary McNamara

NBC didn’t air the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs choir covering“Get Lucky” or T.a.T.u’s defiantly gay-friendly performance. But Friday night’s telecast of the opening ceremony for the 22nd Winter Olympics in Sochi was an enthralling, if occasionally odd, swirl of East and West, old and new, strange and familiar. It was also a showcase for the increasingly aggrieved political subtext that threatens to overshadow the Games. All early coverage has been couched repeatedly in pejorative — for Russia’s anti-gay laws, the expense of the facilities and shoddiness of accommodations; for the arrogance of the president and the joylessness of the

Russia is one of the worlds worst countries when it comes to concentration of wealth and the wealth gap. Both of these are hallmarks of communism and socialism and we´re headed in the same direction and Obama´s directing the traffic to make it happen.

These filthy rich barons in Russia could easily afford to donate to modernizing the country but of course hey don´t and won´t.Even their oil producing equipment is long outdated and needs tons of maintenance.

These people can´t fix up hotels with basic necessities but they have the money to build up their military machine when they really don´t have any natural enemies..

The liberal American press will try to make Obama´s America look better by aggressively reporting all that is not correct in Russia during the Olympics.

But Obama´s impact on destroying the quality of life in America continues to be ignored.

the wife and I couldn´t believe how bad the coverage of the opening ceremonies was. Between Lauer´s ceaseless, inane yammering and the relentless commercials (why couldn´t they pause what was, after all, a recorded event to play the ads instead of abruptly cutting away at all the best parts?) it was nearly unwatchable.

We gave up watching the Olympics on US television years ago. The internet and a little ingenuity open the door to much broader and qualitatively better coverage -- without the endless commercial breaks. At least NBC´s junkyard dog defense of 0bama (which is what all the negative commentary is really about) has displaced their traditional and annoying practice of amplifying every scintilla of emotion they can uncover to the point of inanity. I still remember Katie Couric years ago chasing some athlete down a track, asking what his dead father would think of his medal.

After watching coverage of the Olympics deteriorate over the years, I´ve come to the conclusion that if you have an interest in the games or in certain sports, you just have to grit your teeth and stay with it, or forget watching altogether and wait to read it on the internet.

I´ve finally faced up to the fact that the days of Jim McKay are long past. Long past. More´s the pity.

I was thoroughly depressed by the reporting on the opening ceremonies. The woman nitwit had nothing good to say about anyone. It was like inviting THE most negative, insulting person to dinner (which seemed to last hours and hours)who completely dominated the conversation with depressing tidbits and snide remarks. The only way to tolerate her was with heavy consumption of wine (which I´m not doing at this time)and a firm resolution to NEVER invite her back.

This is nothing new. Decades ago, when I still cared/watched, my sister and I would turn the volume on the TV down to the point where we could almost here the music but couldn´t hear the commentators. That´s the only way to watch opening and closing ceremonies and figure skating.

The article comments on the commentators commenting on the Russians not acknowledging their Communist era.

I looked thru the photos along with the article (since I´m not watching any of this on TV.) One picture shows two giant heads, one male, one female, along with one giant hand each.

One held a sickle; one held a hammer.

Oh, I know! That was a tribute to Russia´s agricultural and manufacturing past!

President Barack Obama hits Chicago on Wednesday for two jumbo priced fundraisers to benefit the Democratic National Committee. Obama hosts a roundtable—I am told keyed towards business executives—at the Chicago Cut Steakhouse downtown where about 25 folks are expected; the tab is up to $32,400. The Obama roundtable is hosted by Mesirow Financial Chairman and CEO Richard Price. Later, Obama is the headliner at a dinner for about 55—donating up to $10,000--at the Lincoln Park home of Craig Freedman and Grace Tsao-Wu, who is an Obama major donor and fund-raiser. Here is a seeming paradox of American life. One the one hand, there is a broad social-science correlation between religious faith and various social goods — health and happiness, upward mobility, social trust, charitable work and civic participation. Yet at the same time, some of the most religious areas of the country — the Bible Belt, the deepest South — struggle mightily with poverty, poor health, political corruption and social disarray. Part of this paradox can be resolved by looking at nonreligious variables like race. But part of it reflects an important fact about religion in America: The social goods

Instead they were treated with indifference or, even worse, with outright scorn," said Gov. Rick Perry. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas.
