Cowboy Poetry Festival Tries

ELKO, Nevada—Rodeo poet Paul Zarzyski can’t help grinning when he thinks of the National Poetry Gathering’s early days. In the late 1980s, the Elko Convention Center auditorium was filled to ranch folks on holiday and most of the cowboy poets were just off the range. Now finishing its 30th year, the poetry gathering has gained national prominence and a certain cache. It still draws its share of working buckaroos and ranch bosses, but take a seat at bars inside the Star Hotel Basque restaurant, the Pioneer Saloon or the venerable Stockman’s, and you’re as likely to strike up a conversation with

I go most years. I am already thinking about what to take this year to the one at Sul Ross college in Alpine Texas starting Feb 19th.
These people are a pleasure to be around and mingle with.
I could go on and on about their true American spirit, values and work ethics, but you have to be there to really appreciate them.
The SR college kids are an upstanding bunch also. They give hope that America will shuck the socialist movement.

Here´s some cowboy poetry from a non-cowboy, James Taylor, live in 1970. He sings out a song that is soft but it´s clear, as if maybe someone could hear.

Don´t worry about anything. Harry "Cowgirl Up" Reid will keep the millions flowing for this most non-essential, non-effective fraud going as long as we have enough idiots in this country voting to keep Dem senators in power.

Have a dear friend that started going at the very beginning, just ranch folks getting together. Then several years ago it got taken over by the wanna-bees, richies, and show-offs. In the beginning the venues were free and then it got so expensive most folks I know quit going. What the heck the cadaver spends all that money on is beyond me because they charge the hell out of everyone that still goes.

Following Mike Rogers’ announcement that he won’t be seeking re-election as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, colleagues were shocked—but also eager to fill his big shoes. So far, three members have emerged as top con-tenders. Three Republican lawmakers are emerging as leading candidates to replace Rep. Mike Rogers as chairman of the powerful House Intelligence Committee, after Rogers announced Friday that he would not be seeking re-election to Congress. While Rogers has said he will continue to serve out his term until the current session of Congress ends, the race to become his successor has already begun. In interviews with GOP House

Trenton, New Jersey -- He´s baaaaack. The defiant and combative Chris Christie that reporters knew from the past returned in full spring bloom on Friday, now that a report he commissioned cleared him of wrongdoing in the George Washington Bridge lane closure controversy. A few minutes into his first news conference in more than two months, New Jersey´s Republican governor flashed his famous cantankerousness at suggestions he was hiding something about the apparently politically motivated traffic jams last September in Fort Lee. "Colorful," he interjected as one journalist asked an extended question. "Can you get to it already?" Later, he cut off a reporter

DETROIT-- General Motors announced two more recalls late Friday, bringing to 4.8 million the number of cars, trucks and SUVs the automaker has called back for repairs in the past month. The string of recalls, topped by an ignition switch problem in compact cars now linked to 13 crash deaths, has embarrassed the company and sidetracked its new CEO, who started work just over two months ago. GM has admitted knowing about the switch problem a decade ago, yet it didn´t recall any cars until February. The recall delay has brought two congressional investigations and probes by the Justice Department and

As part of its plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, the Obama administration is targeting the dairy industry to reduce methane emissions in their operations. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas. Some of these methane emissions come from

Texas Governor Rick Perry is currently on a media tour touting the theme that America is a great place for second chances, specifically second chances for Texas governors with national ambitions. A startling rift appeared Tuesday on the Supreme Court as the three female Justices came out swinging like Brunnhildes — women warriors — for what they erroneously labeled an “entitlement” to employer-provided contraceptives and morning-after pills. The Justices were hearing oral arguments in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., a case hyped by the Democratic Party as a test for women’s rights. Justices Kagan, Ginsberg, and Sotomayor sprang on Hobby Lobby’s attorney , interrupting his every sentence and pummeling him with questions taken right out of the Democratic Party’s “war on women” playbook. Incidentally, Maraniss was telling the truth: Ann´s "days in Seattle" weren´t mentioned in Dreams from my Father and were only vaguely implied in Maraniss´s lengthy 2008 article.
