SOCHI, Russia -- IOC President Thomas Bach took a shot at former President George Bush for breaking the traditional protocol at the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Bach was asked at a news conference whether Russian President Vladimir Putin might use Friday night´s opening ceremony in Sochi as political propaganda. Bach said, under the Olympic Charter, heads of state speak only one sentence, declaring the games open. Bach said all leaders have kept to the script -- "except for one who violated the charter in Salt Lake City in 2002." The Salt Lake Games were

"On behalf of a proud, determined and grateful nation, I declare open the games of Salt Lake City, celebrating the Winter Games." ~ President George W. Bush

What President Bush did so soon after 9/11/01 was worth "violating" the Olympic Charter in 2002.

Thank you, President Bush, and God bless you.

It seems to me Mr. Bach´s statement at the opening ceremony was pretty political and was not appreciated by the audience (the parts where the booing started).

If he didn´t violate the charter himself, then the charter needs to be changed.

Putin didn´t say anything because whole opening ceremony was about politics...the rise of Communism....so I would say as GWB was actually complimenting the rest of the world for their support, as in the nation being grateful....Putin was trying to convince the world of how wonderful living under communism is ....

OP said it well. I too wonder who encouraged the IOC President to say such a thing. There was a time when we had former Presidents (of both parties) that would stand the heck up and issue a statement firmly denouncing such a pronouncement. Alas, none of today´s nincompoops want to "offend" so the slap to a good man goes unchallenged.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — A serial killer was put to death Thursday in Texas after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his lawyers’ demand that the state release information about where it gets its lethal injection drug. Tommy Lynn Sells, 49, was the first inmate to be injected with a dose of newly replenished pentobarbital that Texas prison officials obtained to replace an expired supply of the powerful sedative. Sells declined to give a statement. As the drug began flowing into his arms inside the death chamber in Huntsville, Sells took a few breaths, his eyes closed and he began to snore.

The young girl was told by a school lunchroom supervisor that her actions were wrong. The girl’s father, Marcos Perez, is outraged to the point where he is considering homeschooling his child. Today, the Liberty Institute sent a letter to the school administrators demanding they stop allowing religious discrimination, which is in violation of not only state, but federal law.
