Report: 4 billion birds die annually
in building crashes, cat attacks

Washington Examiner [DC], by Paul Bedard

The largest and most comprehensive study of bird collision deaths ever finds that nearly 1 billion birds die in building crashes every year, a shocking number that has fans of the feather creatures urging construction companies to use new materials to stop the annihilation. The mortality study from over 92,000 records found that between 365 million and 988 million birds crash and die in the United States. The number easily climbs over 1 billion when reports from Canada are included. Only cats are a bigger danger to birds, killing as many as 3 billion a year in the U.S. “Our

Take the known bird death by buildings and multiply by 100,000, because we all know most bird strikes/deaths go unreported, then put out a ridiculous number and ask that builders become more Eco-friendly, like windmills...

I understand.

However, we have had a very young bald eagle fly into one of our windows, sit and collect himself, and fly away.

Is this an anti-cat story?

And yet there are still plenty of those very species left. We´ve had everything from cardinals and goldfinches to hummers and even a sharp-shinned hawk crash into our solarium windows. Some survived and some didn´t; those that didn´t becoming dinner for something else. It´s called the circle of life.
But I must add that we´ve never chopped up a bald eagle or a bat.

Do birds ever have fatal collisions with trees, mountains, or other natural objects? Or is it just the windows and man-made materials that confuse them?

My granddaughter was one of the counters for this test. She wore herself out digging through the rubble of ´crashed´ buildings in order to make sure her count was accurate.

Her cousin who´s job was to dissect cats and count the numbers of birds eaten, was a much easier, yet higher pay grade position: go figure.

That it! I´m going to stop drinking before noon.

I think we need a study of how many insects fly around buildings to lure the birds to their deaths and teach them to fly elsewhere.

As for cats, I will accept almost any excuse to rid the world of them.

They nest at my entrance, attack me when I come and go, relieve themselves on my car, line the electric lines and relieve themselves when I ride under them on my bike, and swarm about my head when I walk under the trees that overhang the sidewalk. I am thinking maybe there are enough birds.

From 1964 to 1968, close to 34,000 Americans died in South Vietnam. We will never know how many Vietnamese women, men, and children perished during those years, but the total, according to most estimates, was at least one million. As the midterm elections approach and the administration’s incompetence, along with the distaste for the president’s signature ObamaCare legislation, drive the party’s chances down further, the make-believe coalition of opposites may well crumble if the opposition doesn’t blow it.
