Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death points
to broader opioid drug epidemic

Washington Post, by Joel Achenbach

Original Article

Posted By:FlyRight, 2/7/2014 2:00:46 PM

The death last Sunday of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman at age 46 focused media attention on the nationwide surge in heroin use and overdoses. But the very real heroin epidemic is framed by an even more dramatic increase since the beginning of the century in overdoses from pharmaceutical drugs known as opioids. These are, in effect, tandem epidemics — an addiction crisis driven by the powerful effects on the human brain of drugs derived from morphine.Further tests are pending to determine the precise cause of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death.

I am sorry for his children.
But no sympathy for him.
He was supposed to go pick up his kids and instead chose to shoot heroin. He had the wrong priorities and paid with his life.

We have all heard that Rats will chose drugs over food but...

a researcher recently built a giant rat cage with tubes and wheels and lots of other rats to play with and those rats chose food over drugs!

The moral - get a life. Even a rat life is better than being a drug addict.

Ignorance knows no bounds. Too bad people automatically jump to conclusions about addiction without ever having known it. Addiction can happen to anyone--even top professionals and respectable community members. It can start off with an accident or injury or some other innocent thing. But no...to hear it from some people, anyone who has ever had an addiction must be a low life or a lefty. Ugh. Thank you #4.

Addiction can NOT happen to just anyone. It only happens to the idiots that take a drug. The first time user was not an addict until after he chose to use.

He had used drugs in the past, he knew how bad they were, yet he chose to go back to using drugs.

He had a responsibility to his family. He didn´t live up to it.

The number of people who get involuntarily hooked on prescription drugs is a subset of the user community. Most (as in the case of Hoffman) get hooked as a byproduct of recreational drugs use i.e., looking to get high. People looking for a thrill through drugs get what they deserve.

President Obama stood Friday with the Rev. Two years before the Boston Marathon bombing, the Russian government concealed key information on one of the killers that might have thwarted the attack, a new report charges.Kremlin officials intercepted a phone conversation in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev discussed Islamic jihad with his mother, but they withheld the information from the FBI, according to the U.S. inspector general report that comes as the one-year anniversary of the bombing approaches. Fears that high-speed traders have been rigging the U.S. stock market went mainstream last week thanks to allegations in a book by financial author Michael Lewis, but there may be a more serious threat to investors: the increasing amount of trading that happens outside of exchanges. Some former regulators and academics say so much trading is now happening away from exchanges that publicly quoted prices for stocks on exchanges may no longer properly reflect where the market is. And this problem could cost investors far more money than any shenanigans related to high frequency trading. When the average investor, or even

After his health-care law surpassed the low-ball enrollment target of 7 million, President Obama staged a Rose Garden rally and zinged doubters: “Armageddon has not arrived.” At least he did not declare: “Mission Accomplished.”The country is years from knowing whether Obama’s overhaul of the health-care system fulfills the promise of delivering universal coverage. While large numbers of Americans have found the program very advantageous, including people who were formerly uninsured, many others have been forced to change plans or change doctors — contrary to Obama’s repeated promises.Obama tacitly admits the unintended consequences every time he waives a deadline or mandate in

A triumphant President Barack Obama declared Tuesday his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better´ in a Rose Garden press conference. But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night.

The world is doing everything it can to run in the opposite direction of abundance because we think we have too much. The West dreads warmer weather, even though warmer weather might

Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators.
