Dallas Buyers Club:
The not-so-straight truth

The Telegraph, by Alex Hannaford

Original Article

Bill Minutaglio leafed through the pages of the Village Voice newspaper. A New Yorker living and working in Dallas, Texas, Minutaglio loved to catch up with the minutiae of his old home town, and as a staffer on the Dallas Morning News’s Sunday magazine, he was always on the lookout for stories that might resonate with his readers. That morning there was one: the Voice contained a piece about so-called “buyers clubs”.(Snip)Steven Pounders, who was Woodroof’s doctor from 1989 until he died in 1992, says: “I never thought of him as straight in the least. Comments:
So, Hollywood rewrote his personal life just so the main character can go from ignorant cowboy homophobe to an enlightened man.

We go to movies to be entertained. This does not sound like an entertaining movie, Matthew McConaughey has become one weird dude in real life, so for me the dissection of the Woodruff character in a film full of concocted characters sounds a bit ridiculous.

...And he´s from Uvalde, so should know how to better use his talents.

Mayor wants to impose regulations
on ride-sharing industry
Chicago Sun-Times, by Fran Spielman    Original Article

Mayor Rahm Emanuel will move Wednesday to fill a “regulatory vacuum” that has given ride-sharing companies an unfair advantage over taxicabs, with no safeguards to protect consumers. The 20-page ordinance, expected to be introduced at a City Council meeting, would license ride-sharing companies as “transportation network providers” and require them to pay an annual, $25,000 fee, plus $25 per driver. UberX, Lyft, SideCar and other ride-sharing companies that allow drivers to offer rides in their personal vehicles to passengers who order them on their smartphones also would be required to pay the city’s $3.50 a day per vehicle ground transportation

Who´s ready for college?

Illinois rolled out its new, information-chocked school report card recently and provided an easy-to-understand figure of how many Illinois high school graduates are ready to go to college. Brace yourself: It´s only 46 percent. That, the state says, pegs how students have a reasonable chance at college success, based on their ACT scores. You don´t need to have nailed a perfect 36 on the ACT to know that means a little more than half of high school grads aren´t ready to do college-level work. Brace yourself again: Even that may be optimistic. By the ACT´s own calculations, only one-fourth of Illinois students are prepared

Apparently there´s no stopping a driver determined to run in a hit-and-run. A video circulating online depicts a cab driver trying to stop a black SUV from leaving the 1400 block of West Belmont after it rear-ended him. But the SUV driver was determined to leave. The cabbie jumped in front of the SUV, motioned for other cars to block the SUV and even started beating at the SUV´s driver-side window. But the SUV backed up and sped west — ultimately crashing into four other cars and leaving glass from broken headlights on the street in its attempt to run,

A north suburban parks official says he´s standing up for the U.S. Constitution by sitting down during the Pledge of Allegiance. But Morton Grove Park District Commissioner Dan Ashta´s symbolic actions have spurred an ideological tug of war with a local veterans group, which recently halted cash donations to the Park District until its entire board stands for the pledge at park board meetings. "Every veteran has taken an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and has been willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for all of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans," said Joseph Lampert, 47, commander of American Legion

A man from Arkansas died from gunshot wounds after he was dropped off at a Near West Side hospital by a cousin early Thursday morning, authorities said. Robert Franklin, 55, had been in a car with the cousin when they stopped to ask for directions, police said. The person they approached got into the back of the car and announced a robbery, police said. The robber fired into the car while getting out and hit Franklin in the back at least four times, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner´s office. The cousin drove Franklin to Stroger Hospital about 3:45 a.m.

Neighborhood Medical Supply Shops

A change in Medicare reimbursements is resulting in neighborhood medical supply stores shutting and, say those opposed to the change, making it harder for people to obtain wheelchairs, walkers, canes and oxygen equipment. Karen Walaszek is shutting her Master Medical Supplies at 1821 W. Chicago Ave. in Ukrainian Village after 30 years, saying the reimbursement change has "forced [me] into a corner." Master Medical is one of perhaps dozens of shops closing in the Chicago area, a list that also includes Activa Medical Supply at 2212 W. North Ave. in Wicker Park. Retired city workers are asking a judge to block Mayor Emanuel from making them rely on Obamacare for their health insurance. It could cost Chicago taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. This affects most city retirees and it underscores how, after decades of grotesque financial mismanagement, the only choices left are painful ones.(Snip) When Mayor Emanuel sent letters announcing the change last month to about 24,000 retired city workers, the watchdog Civic Federation praised the move, saying it could eventually save taxpayers $70 million or more each year.

Chicago Public Schools officials revealed Tuesday that only 52.5 percent of the district´s elementary students met or exceeded state academic standards in the last school year. That´s a nearly 22-percentage-point plunge from a year earlier. Students didn´t suddenly get less intelligent. They were not doing as well in the past as everyone was led to believe. The state had dumbed down the tests and lowered cut scores to avoid sanctions from the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Educators fed parents an illusion that the vast majority of Illinois elementary students

Were he alive today, Richard Nixon would have to doff his hat to Barack Obama. Compared with how the Obama administration has swept under the rug the Benghazi attacks of September 11, 2012, Nixon’s attempt to cover up the Watergate burglary was rank amateurism. To be fair, Nixon’s team of Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, and Dean were not in the same league as Obama’s, which includes not only his cabinet but most of the national media and much of Congress.
