A Crappy Job on the U.S.
Debt, Deficit, and Growth

National Journal, by Ron Fournier

Picture your basement. Now picture your basement with a huge pipe spewing raw sewage. You call a plumber and he dawdles before partially plugging the pipe. The sludge rises a tad more slowly, but your basement quickly fills. "Here´s the bill," the plumber says. "My job is done." This is the crappy way in which the White House and Congress are handling the U.S. debt, deficit, and economic growth. In this metaphor, the sewage mounting in the basement is the debt, the amount owed to U.S. creditors plus interest paid on those bills. It is $17.3 trillion. The sewage pouring out of a

I don´t think this analogy is quite right, it´s more like purposely bleeding the patient to death.

A better analogy would be the plumber putting in a larger pipe to allow the debt sewage to flow in faster.

Silencing the Truth at the IRS

Rude and bullying, Rep. Darrell Issa silenced the microphone of Rep. Elijah Cummings during a congressional hearing into the IRS´ targeting of tea party groups. "Mr. Chairman," the Democrat fumed as Republican Issa walked away, "what are you hiding?" Issa didn´t answer. "He´s taking the Fifth, Elijah," Democratic Rep. Gerald Connolly joked, a reference to the committee´s reluctant witness, former IRS official Lois Lerner, who refused again to explain the agency´s actions, citing her constitutional right not to self-incriminate. Partisans rejoice! Conservatives are applauding Issa for shutting down a Democrat. Without evidence, the Right has convicted Lerner, the IRS, the White House,

Former Top Leaders of Dewey

The former top leaders of Dewey & LeBoeuf have been indicted by a New York grand jury on charges that they used accounting gimmicks to deceive banks and investors as they sought tens of millions of dollars in financing to keep the law firm afloat. In announcing the charges on Thursday, the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., painted a picture of a law firm that operated in a way that was reminiscent of the kind of accounting shenanigans that took place in scandals at Enron, WorldCom and Tyco. The 106-count indictment against Steven Davis, the firm’s former chairman; Stephen DiCarmine,

They´re Mayor de Blasio’s educational orphans. As Hizzoner battles Gov. Cuomo over prekindergarten and charter schools, nearly 200 kids whose Harlem charter de Blasio booted don’t know where they’ll go to class in September. The distraught families, their lives now thrown into turmoil, feel they have nowhere to turn. “I wanted the best for my daughter,” said Rakim Smith, 40, a cable technician from Harlem whose daughter Dymond is a sixth-grader at Success Academy Harlem Central Middle School. “Now they’re trying to take it away.” Smith and Dymond, 11, spent years building a path to a better life with a

What a moment New York is in over charter schools. Mayor de Blasio has managed to illuminate the heroism of Eva Moskowitz and the families of her Success Academy. It could be a springboard for Moskowitz to run for mayor. Gov. Cuomo is now in the fight in a big and encouraging way. This strikes me as a moment to take the education debate to the next step — school vouchers. I’ve been banging this drum for years; it’s a decidedly minority position. Mayor Bloomberg viewed it as chimerical, and chose to go with charters and put them on the map. Strategically,

Washington — Congressional aides involved in preparing the Senate Intelligence Committee’s unreleased study of the CIA’s secret interrogation and detention program walked out of the spy agency’s fortress-like headquarters with classified documents that the CIA contended they weren’t authorized to have, McClatchy has learned. After the CIA confronted the panel in January about the removal of the material last fall, panel staff concluded that the agency had monitored computers they’d been given to use in a high-security research room at the CIA campus in Langley, Va., a McClatchy investigation found.

Hillary Clinton’s K Street network is preparing for a White House run in 2016. With Democrats in Congress already anointing Clinton as the party’s standard-bearer, lobbyists are pledging their allegiance and making clear they will do whatever they can to help the former first lady become first in command. “I would definitely support her in 2016. If she runs, I will support her. No doubt,” said David Jones, a partner at Capitol Counsel, who was a member of the finance committee for Clinton’s 2008 campaign. “I never even considered anyone else,” Jones said. Clinton has not yet revealed her plans for 2016. But

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine — Lawmakers in the embattled Crimean region of Ukraine have decided to hold a referendum March 16 on whether Crimea should become part of Russia. “This is our response to the disorder and lawlessness in Kiev,” Sergei Shuvainikov, a member of the local Crimean legislature, said Thursday. “We will decide our future ourselves.” The parliament in Crimea, which enjoys a degree of autonomy under current Ukrainian law, voted 78 with eight abstentions in favor of holding the referendum. Local voters will also be given the choice of deciding to remain part of Ukraine, but with enhanced local powers. There was

Things are moving far too fast in Kiev, Moscow and Crimea to write about events there. But the past isn´t going anywhere. Though you wouldn´t know that from the way the Obama administration talks about it. Throughout this crisis — indeed, throughout all of Barack Obama´s presidency — the White House has been eager to insist that our long, unpleasant history with the Russians is behind us. Obviously, every administration wants a fresh start with long-time rivals. That's why there have been four "resets" with the Russians since 1991, including George W. Bush's famous soul-searching gaze into Vladimir Putin's eyes and Hillary Clinton's comic effort to give the Russians a "reset" button (that actually said "overcharge" on

And at the top of the segment, when Ford came out on stage, the very first thing he did was throw t-shirts into the audience. Kimmel couldn’t believe Ford actually agreed to come on his show, and on top of that, that Ford actually gives out his phone

We might as well call this The Merkel Theory, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel first gave voice to it during a phone call with President Barack Obama last weekend. Oversight members are reportedly open to granting Lerner a one-week delay if she petitions for one in person at Wednesday’s hearing. The delay would allow Lerner’s lawyers to

At Chipotle, guacamole costs extra - but it soon may not be available at all thanks to climate change. The Denver, Colorado-based chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants threatened to take the condiment off the menu because of the rising price of avocados. While the avocado crop is currently fine, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are predicting drier temperatures will lead to a 40 per cent drop in California´s avocado crop over the next 32 years. Most modern scientists agree that there is a direct correlation between the increase of droughts and global warming, according to Think Progress.

Where Lois Lerner goes, drama follows. On Wednesday, the former IRS officer again invoked the Fifth before the House Oversight Committee. That precipitated a heated exchange between the committee’s Republican chairman, Darrell Issa, and Democratic ranking member Elijah Cummings, who called the hearings “un-American.” And that spat has become the story. No doubt that is exactly what Cummings had in mind. Because it distracts attention from the substance of the hearings — and from the questions raised by e-mails and public remarks Lois Lerner wrote, received or made when she was IRS Director of Tax Exempt Organizations. A shocking poll released Tuesday shows overwhelming majorities of people in Virginia, New York and New Jersey support a national gun registry. Even in the southern state of Virginia — which has gone blue in recent years — 63 percent want the federal government to track all guns. NRA Spokesman Andrew

As a U.S. senator, Barack Obama won $48 million in federal funding to help Ukraine destroy thousands of tons of guns and ammunition--weapons which are now unavailable to the Ukrainian army as it faces down Russian President Vladimir Putin during his invasion of Crimea. In August 2005, just seven months after his swearing-in, Obama traveled to Donetsk in Eastern Ukraine with then-Indiana Republican Senator Dick Lugar, touring a conventional weapons site. WASHINGTON — Charles G. and David H. Koch, the billionaire brothers who are perhaps the best-known patrons of conservative Republican politics, are bespectacled and in their 70s. But Democrats are embarking on a broad effort that aims to unmask the press-shy siblings and portray them, instead, as a pair of villains bent on wrecking progressive politics. On Thursday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is starting a digital campaign that will use Internet ads and videos, as well as social media, to tie Republican Senate candidates to the policies and actions of the Koch brothers.
