Secret court approves
phone surveillance changes

McClatchy Newspapers, by James Rosen

National intelligence chief James R. Clapper said Thursday that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court had approved two limits on how the government can use huge volumes of data it collects about Americans´ phone use. The new restrictions were among reforms promised last month by President Barack Obama to the controversial anti-terror surveillance program of the National Security Agency. Under the first change, Clapper said, the massive caches of phone records can be searched only after a court finds that there is "a reasonable, articulable suspicion that the selection term is associated with an approved international

IRS says bitcoin will be taxed

Virtual currencies like bitcoin will be taxed like property — not currency, the Internal Revenue Service said Tuesday. The IRS says bitcoin is not legal tender. You can´t use it to pay your taxes. However, if you receive wages in bitcoin, you have to pay taxes on it just like you would if you got paid in dollars. Or if you got paid in chickens. The IRS issued a series of 16 questions and answers Tuesday to clarify the tax treatment of virtual currencies like bitcoin. In general, the IRS says it will apply the same rules that govern other barter transactions. If you receive wages in bitcoin, they would be taxed at their fair market value at the time you were

Ralph Hall is the oldest person to sit in the House of Representatives in American history. The Texas Republican, who was born in the Harding Adminstration, was first elected to Congress in 1980 and has represented Northeast Texas´s 4th Congressionial District ever since. But his time on Capitol Hill may come to an abrupt end in Texas´s primary runoff on May 27th as conservatives sense blood in the water. It´s never a good sign for an incumbent to be held beneath 50% and forced into a runoff but that´s just what happened to Hall in his primary earlier this month. Bullied into action by Edward Snowden—no hero or traitor, he—President Obama might finally get one thing right about the Surveillance State. To borrow a favorite phrase, he might be on the right side of history. The New York Times reported today that the White House will ask Congress to end the National Security Agency´s open-ended collection of data about Americans´ calling habits. Under the proposal, the bulk records would stay in the hands of phone companies, which would not be required to retain the data for any longer than they normally would. The NSA could seize specific records only with

Galveston - The U.S. Coast Guard has authorized limited use of the Houston Ship Channel previously closed because of an oil spill, officials said Tuesday. Although cleanup efforts continue, ships are being cleared to move through the channel by a Port Coordination Team and barges have been allowed to resume operations, according to a statement issued by the Texas City Y Response Unified Command. The statement said assessment teams have deemed the water in the channel clear of oil. "The cleanup operations progress is to the point that there is minimal danger of contamination to the commercial maritime traffic and

Remember the ‘fiscal cliff’? Well, it hurt

Income growth was slower in 2013 than the year before in every state, according to new federal data. But don’t worry, it was all just the result of a year-old political fight. (Snip) But compare each state to its own recent record, and you’ll see incomes decelerating. Why? Well, the “fiscal cliff” — the end-of-2012 fight over tax hikes and spending cuts. One of those expiring cuts, the payroll tax cut, was putting money into the hands of Americans. Once it expired, that money started flowing back to the government. Also, the comparison isn’t quite fair. Income growth in 2012 was artificially higher due to the fiscal cliff because of concerns

Judging by the recent royal temper tantrums and the parade of op-eds suggesting ways to soothe the Saudis, President Obama’s trip to Saudi Arabia on Thursday is shaping up as one of the more awkward diplomatic encounters this side of the “Red Wedding.” Saudi officials have made no secret of their displeasure over the United States’ support of democratic change in Egypt and across the region, its refusal to leap into a Syrian quagmire and its role in the nuclear negotiations with Iran. The Saudis have hardly been assuaged by U.S. deference to Riyadh on their human rights abuses or passive acceptance of Saudi support for Egypt’s

Senate Democrats will remove provisions from a proposed aid package for Ukraine that would change how the United States provides money for the International Monetary Fund in order to ensure quicker passage of the measure, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday. The decision caps more than a week of disagreement between Democrats and Republicans over whether to use an aid package for the new Ukrainian government to also make changes sought by the White House that would shift about $63 billion in IMF money from a crisis fund to a general account. Doing so would make good on a 2010 pledge by the

Not too long ago, the Greens of Oklahoma City were law-abiding people running an arts-and-crafts chain called Hobby Lobby. They weren’t disturbing the peace, or denying anyone his or her rights. They were minding their own business — quite successfully and in keeping with their Christian faith. The roughly 600 Hobby Lobby stores stock Christian products, close on Sundays, and play Christian music. Then one day Uncle Sam showed up to make an offer that the Greens couldn’t refuse — literally. As part of Obamacare, federal law demands that the chain cover contraceptives that the Greens consider abortifacients.

As I discussed last week, the fundamental problem that Ukraine poses for Russia, beyond a long-term geographical threat, is a crisis in internal legitimacy. (Snip) At the very least, the Russians intend to reverse events in Ukraine. At most, the Russians have reached the conclusion that the United States intends to undermine Russia´s power. They will resist. The United States has the option of declining confrontation, engaging in meaningless sanctions against individuals and allowing events to take their course. Alternatively, the United States can choose to engage and confront the Russians.

Cairo - An Egyptian court has sentenced 529 people to death in the largest capital punishment case on record in Egypt, judicial authorities said Monday. The alleged supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi were convicted on charges of killing a single police officer, the attempted murder of two other officers, and attacking a police station in the Nile Valley city of Minya in August. Sixteen people were acquitted. The mass sentencing underscored the severity of an ongoing campaign by Egypt’s military-backed leaders to silence opposition, eight months after a military coup ousted Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. Corporations are not people. Corporations cannot have religious views. If religious rights are extended to corporations, it puts us on a slippery slope where any private company

The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said Obama didn´t have the foresight to anticipate Russia´s moves and should have been working earlier with allies to make clear the penalties that Russia would face if it moved into Ukraine. Romney did acknowledge that such steps may not have been enough though to hold back Russia President Vladimir Putin. "Had we communicated those things, there´s always

Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,
