GAO: DHS Mismanaging Upgrades to
‘Vital’ Border Enforcement System

Washington Free Beacon, by Elizabeth Harrington

Original Article

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is mismanaging an upgrade to its vital border security computer database that tracks who is eligible to enter the United States, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO). GAO’s Director of Information Technology Management Issues David A. Powner testified before a House homeland security subcommittee on Thursday, regarding millions in waste and failures by DHS to meet deadlines for upgrading its primary border enforcement system. TECS is the DHS system responsible for “sharing information about people who are inadmissible or may pose a threat to the security of the United States.” The program has been used

Comments:
Another day, another horror story about the complete incompetence and inability of our government to protect its citizens. The DHS never should have been created. Of course under 0bama it´s gotten even worse and he has no desire to protect and defend this country, even though he puts on a good act to the contrary. This is just terrifying.

A conservative activist targeted by the IRS and other agencies claimed Thursday that Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings also tried to intimidate her, filing a formal complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics alleging an "abuse of power." Catherine Engelbrecht, founder of True the Vote and the King Street Patriots, aired the allegations during a hearing hosted by the committee on which Cummings sits. An attorney working with her also questioned whether Cummings might have encouraged the IRS and other agencies to target her groups. Cummings, though, adamantly denied wrongdoing and said he can "assure" Engelbrecht that he did not direct

On her 1 p.m. ET hour MSNBC show on Thursday, host Andrea Mitchell saw immigration reform as a way to save Barack Obama´s floundering presidency: "This would be, you know, the jewel in the crown for this administration, they´ve had so few legacy things that have not been complicated. Health care is obviously complicated by the downsides. Immigration would be the real key to this second term." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump] Liberal Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus agreed: "It would be the jewel in the crown of an otherwise rocky second term..." Mitchell

The headlines out of Capitol Hill today are all screaming about how immigration reform is, yet again, dead. "Boehner Doubts Immigration Overhaul Will Pass This Year," blares The New York Times. "Boehner hits brakes on immigration overhaul," Fox News reports. Don´t believe any of it for a second. If anything, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) opened the door wider for immigration reform this year. But only if President Obama is willing to pass the rest of the House Republican leadership jobs agenda. Here is what Boehner actually said: Listen, there’s widespread doubt about whether this administration can be trusted to enforce our laws. And it’s going

Republican leaders eyeing immigration reform have been shaken by new polling that shows a majority of their supporters oppose immigration reform, the Dream Act and citizenship. “The leadership should run from this one,” said a key House leadership advisor. According to a new YouGov poll, Republican voters are strongly opposed to the so-called “pathway to citizenship,” which some interpret as amnesty even if immigrants have to pay a fine. According to YouGov, 58 percent of Republicans oppose “providing a legal way for illegal immigrants already in the United States to become U.S. citizens.” It breaks down this way among Republicans: 33 percent don’t

Presidents often award diplomatic posts to campaign donors and fundraisers, but Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., suspects that Obama´s choice of ambassador to Argentina -- a man who bundled more than $500,000 for President Obama´s 2012 re-election campaign, but who has never been to the country -- is in over his head. "Have you been to Argentina?" Rubio asked Noah Mamet during a Senate.gov/hearings/nomination-02-06-2014">Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing Thursday. "I haven´t had the opportunity yet to be there," Mamet replied. "I´ve traveled pretty extensively around the world, but I haven´t yet had chance [to visit Argentina]." The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved President Obama’s nominee to head the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, who had drawn scorn from some Republicans and police unions. Debo Adegbile had received criticism for his involvement in the legal defense of Mumia Abu Jamal, who was convicted of killing Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1982. Adegbile was approved on a 10-8 party-line vote. Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said the nominee did not deserve the “disparagement” aimed at him by some media outlets. Adegbile currently serves on the committee´s majority staff. Much of the criticism of Adegbile stemmed from the incorrect assumption that he

It´s true that Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi deserves Planned Parenthood´s Margaret Sanger Award - almost no one has done more to promote the killing of innocent babies in the womb than she has. If Mrs. Pelosi wants finally to take her role as a public servant seriously, though, she will reject the award named after a racist woman who had no problem speaking to a Ku Klux Klan meeting. The Sanger Award has been given annually by Planned Parenthood since 1966, when the Rev. Dr. Luther King, Jr., my uncle, was named, but did not personally accept one of the first four citations.

It´s so simple," First lady Michelle Obama told students at a suburban Washington high school on Wednesday. The form is FAFSA -- the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. "[T]hrough FAFSA, the Department of Education provides more than $150 billion every year in low-interest loans, in grants that you don´t have to pay back, and work-study programs that can help cover your educational expenses," Mrs. Obama said. At the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, President Barack Obama said that “killing the innocent” is the “ultimate betrayal of God’s will.” But the president was talking about terrorism, not abortion: “Extremists succumb to an ignorant nihilism that shows they don’t understand the faiths they claim to profess, for killing the innocent is never fulfilling God’s will. In fact, it is the ultimate betrayal of God’s will,” Obama said. Yet Obama is a long-time supporter of abortion rights.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade. That is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law. Of course, Republicans immediately tried to brand the findings as “devastating” and stark evidence of President Obama’s health care reform as a failure and a job killer. It is no such thing. (SNIP) The new law will free people, young and old, to pursue careers or retirement without having to worry about health coverage.

The Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, became law almost four years ago. It became operational last Oct. 1. Yesterday, Feb. 4, 2014, the ACA may well have been dealt its death blow. The Congressional Budget Office released a major study of the government’s budget and its effect on the overall economy over the next 10 years. In dull bureaucratic language, it delivers a devastating analysis of the inefficiencies, ineffectualities and problematic social costs of ObamaCare. The one-two punch: Virtually as many Americans will lack health coverage in 10 years as before the law was passed — but 2 million fewer

Washington - Americans overwhelmingly favor a bill that would give most undocumented immigrants a pathway towards citizenship, according to a new national poll. And a CNN/ORC International survey also indicates that a majority of the public says that the government´s main focus should be legalizing the status of the undocumented rather than border security. The poll was released Thursday, the same day that House Speaker John Boehner signaled any action on immigration is unlikely this year because House Republicans don't trust President Barack Obama on the issue. House committees are still digging into the IRS political targeting scandal, and based on a hearing Wednesday there´s more to learn. The day produced more evidence blowing apart President Obama´s claims that there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" or political motivation in the IRS handling of groups applying for tax-exempt status. Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes. This is also the Administration´s justification for issuing new regulations governing

AUSTIN, Texas — The Wild West tradition of openly carrying your six-shooter on the street has long been banned in Texas under state law. But the next governor could change that. It would allow people with concealed handgun licenses to wear a pistol on their hip, in full view, while in public. Davis has said she supports expanding gun rights in Texas. The White House and congressional Democrats tried to limit the fallout Wednesday from the politically damaging conclusion in a Congressional Budget Office report that the Obamacare entitlement creates a major incentive for some people not to work. While some critics focused on a finding by the CBO that Obamacare will result in 2.5 million fewer workers over a decade, conservatives said the bigger fundamental issue highlighted in the report is one familiar to the welfare state — that taxpayer-funded government subsidies provide disincentives for full-time work. “People used to be stuck in jobs because they needed the health insurance,” said
