Boehner urges allies to consider
linking military benefits
to debt limit

Washington Post, by Robert Costa

A new break in the GOP´s debt-ceiling strategy emerged at a private lunch on Wednesday, where House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) encouraged his allies to consider linking a restoration of recently cut military benefits with a one-year extension of the federal government´s borrowing authority. According to two people present at the lunch and two others familiar with the session, Boehner said the maneuver would likely force Democrats to join with Republicans and also win support from conservatives, who have been upset about changes to the military´s cost-of-living benefits, which were adjusted in December. Boehner did not endorse the idea, the sources

Comments:
They now want to hold military benefits ransom to be able to spend more money.

And your still a Republican because.....?

This is another trial balloon from Boehner, it is not leadership. Even the inner circle of his own caucus does not trust him to lead.

Would not conservatives, and the nation, be better off by openly opposing Boehner on everything he proposes until he is replaced?

Correct me if I´m wrong, but wasn´t it Republicans who agreed to that cut a few weeks ago? So now they´re using their own cuts as negotiating tools?

This is simply kabuki theater and they take us for fools.

Boehner is using machiavellian tactics he learned from his new friend Obama against his own base. First take away something important or vital and then offer to restore it if they swallow a bitter pill in some other vital matter. Why does he do this to his base and never to Obama - a real enemy? Obama digs in and won´t negotiate so Boehner just accepts that. Perhaps his own scorned members should refuse to negotiate on this double cross as well. Boehner is working for Obama to get this clean bill through for him. Notice also that it is for a YEAR. They have the power of the purse and they do not want to exercise this power. Obama grabs powers he doesn´t have every day. These useless tools in the GOP don´t even exercise the powers they have to stop Obama. So frustrating!

While you´re at it Mr. B. why not link welfare in all forms to the debt limit.

While you´re at it Mr B. why not link government pay raises across the board to the debt limit.

Like almost everything else in Washington, DC this is about votes in the November election. Someone must have informed Boehner that there are a lot of veterans out there who do not believe that already vested veterans benefits and pensions should be reduced while loopholes exist that allow illegal aliens to collect government benefits from the IRS through filing tax returns that contain bogus claims. On top of that they must have informed Boehner that the vast majority of those veterans actually do vote!

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah launched an “anti-cronyism” agenda Monday with a column in the National Review urging the Republican Party to advocate populist, free-market reforms over tax loopholes, government subsidies and federal bailouts. That kind of Republican party, he writes “could not only unify and excite conservatives, but appeal to hardworking families in the purple and blue communities that President [Barack] Obama’s special-interest favoritism is leaving behind.” Mr. Lee is scheduled to continue the rollout with television appearances, town halls, a speech at the Heritage Foundation on April 30, and several pieces of legislation. Will the real Republican Establishment please stand up? In the four years since the Supreme Court struck down fundraising regulations that effectively gave the Democratic and Republican parties a monopoly on large-scale political activity, a collection of Tea Party-affiliated organizations has arisen in Washington that competes with the GOP for campaign contributors, money and influence -- and over what legislation to push and which candidates to nominate. The groups, including the Club for Growth, FreedomWorks and the Senate Conservatives Fund, have moved aggressively to kill legislation they oppose and oust incumbent Republicans they deem insufficiently conservative. The vote was repeatedly delayed this morning as top Republicans scrambled to find the necessary votes for the legislation.
