How the Seattle Seahawks
Solved Peyton Manning

Wall Street Journal, by Kevin Clark

Original Article

The best quarterback in NFL history was dismantled by one of the best game plans in Super Bowl history. This, upon further review, is the story of Super Bowl XLVIII. On Sunday, in the immediate wake of the Seattle Seahawks´ 43-8 drubbing of Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, it was natural to surmise that Manning, the league´s most valuable player this season, had shrunk on the biggest stage. After all, this is a player whose career playoff record is now a modest 11-12. But a review of the game film shows that Manning´s struggles were destined from the start. Seattle´s strategy

Manning never had time to do what he does best - pick apart the defense. The game is won and lost in the trenches.

Peyton always chokes when he is pressured. When Belichek had a good pass rush he could pressure him - which is why Brady vs. Manning is 10-5 in Brady´s favor. Manning is fine if he can implement his plan but any kind of pressure and he gets happy feet and turns it over. Statistically good - but no where near the greatest of all time.

The stategy worked because the Hawks were physically better at every position on the field. Without the rush Manning picks them apart, without lockdown corners, they get burned deep, without huge safeties and linebackers the middle is open to Welker

Denver´s offensive line did not hold Seahawks off of Manning. Denver´s defense did not do their job,
Seahawks were the better team! Denver lost as a team, not all Peyton´s fault.

Sadly, SF, GB, NO,Phoenix and Carolina would have all beaten Denver in the Super Bowl. The "Super Bowl" was this year´s NFC championship between Seattle and SF.

The AFC is now the junior varsity.

#5 nails it. The strategy noted works ONLY if the Seahawks´ defenders are superior at every position. And they were. Younger. Stronger. Bigger. Faster. Even their 3-man rush got into Manning´s grill on almost every pass. The better team won. Much better team in fact.

´´So the obvious question now isn’t about Manning’s health. It’s not even about what his receiving corps will look like. No, the obvious question isn’t even about Manning. It’s about Tim Tebow, the starting quarterback Manning is supplanting with this move.´´*

No surprise to me that Denver got embarrassed. They traded their future for winning now.

Very good analysis here. It was also evident that Broncos´ receivers were shell-shocked early on; Demarius Thomas had a couple of short catches, but rather than immediately cut upfield for first down yardage, he´d retreat a yard or two and try to pick his way forward. The results speak for themselves. 6 of 13 on 3rd down, 0 of 3 on 4th down, with just 306 net yard. And Denver first 1st down game midway in the 2nd quarter.

The Broncos also have the dubious distinction of owning 3 of the top 10 worst defeats in the Super Bowl.

What´s funny is that Denver did not have an alternate game plan in case ´Plan A´ was not working. Perhaps Elway & Co. started to believe their own press clippings, and just assumed they would win.

It was a Denver team lose, it was evident after a couple of series that the Seattle defense was happy for the Denver receivers to catch those short passes and then to bring those receivers down with little or no gain. What was surprising is that Denver´s football geniuses could not figure that out and adjust accordingly.

As the WSJ would know, when everyone is on the buy side, its time to sell; and so it was w/a vastly overrated Bronco team. This year Seattle was the best in the NFC which was far superior to the AFC. As for Tebow, he was a mediocre college Qb and w/o Percy Harvin at Florida, he wouldn´t even have been drafted by the NFL.

Since the 1950s, geological reports on the hill that buckled during the weekend in Snohomish County have included pessimistic analyses and the occasional dire prediction. But no language seems more prescient than what appears in a 1999 report filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, warning of “the potential for a large catastrophic failure.” That report was written by Daniel J. Miller and his wife, Lynne Rodgers Miller. When she saw the news of the mudslide Saturday, she knew right away where the land had given way. Her husband knew, too. “We’ve known it would happen at some point,”

How Republicans Can Win Black Votes

Recently former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice added her voice to those who have long been urging the Republican party to reach out to black voters. Not only is that long overdue, what is also long overdue is putting some time — and, above all, some serious thought — into how to go about doing it. Too many Republicans seem to think that the way to “reach out” is to offer blacks and other minorities what the Democrats are offering them. Some have even suggested that the channels to use are organizations like the NAACP and black “leaders” like Jesse Jackson
