The dark side of Vladimir Putin´s
Winter Olympic Games

Telegraph (UK), by Neil Tweedie

Original Article

Snow is not usually in short supply in Russia at this time of year but there is one place where it is the most precious of commodities – Sochi. Fly south from Moscow to this Black Sea resort and you spend two and a half hours staring down at nothing but white, a vast and empty landscape plunged into deep freeze. But arrive in Sochi and the thermometer shoots up. No white here, just a rather dispiriting shade of brown. This is not what one expects of a venue for the Winter Olympics, which begin here on Friday in front

I´ve had a bad feeling about these games for a while, mainly because of the terror threat, but now I can add a new worry about the integrity of the infrastructure as well. Whether the ski jump and the bobsled and luge tracks, for example, will be structurally sound is questionable.
I sure hope my fears prove to be unfounded.

10 NYC schoolchildren have
committed suicide in 2014
New York Post, by Kevin Fasick and Laura Italiano    Original Article

The city’s public schools are in the grip of a suicide epidemic. Ten students have taken their own lives in the past seven weeks, according to remarks made Saturday by Chancellor Carmen Fariña. “As chancellor, I’ve been on the job seven weeks, and there have already been 10 reported suicides. We cannot allow those,” she told 250 new principals at Stuyvesant HS during a private meeting. “I get those e-mails all the time. And it makes me heartsick.” The tragic statistic — which amounts to more than one suicide per week — has not been released publicly. The Post obtained a recording of Fariña’s

Romney slams Obama for
´faulty judgment´ on Russia
Associated Press, by Kevin Freking    Original Article

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney said Sunday that President Barack Obama is naive when it comes to Russia, has shown "faulty judgment" about Moscow´s intentions and could have done more to try to deter its annexation of Crimea. The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said Obama didn´t have the foresight to anticipate Russia´s moves and should have been working earlier with allies to make clear the penalties that Russia would face if it moved into Ukraine. Romney did acknowledge that such steps may not have been enough though to hold back Russia President Vladimir Putin. "Had we communicated those things, there´s always

Midterm mania: Democratic

The conventional wisdom -- that Democrats will probably lose the Senate this fall -- is now hardening into cement. Even Democratic pundits are falling into line. We all know that politics is a never-ending spin cycle in which commentators cast their own side in the most favorable light. That helps explain why some conservatives insisted up to Election Day that Mitt Romney was going to send Barack Obama packing. It´s still early for definitive pronouncements about whether Republicans will pick up the six seats they need to make Mitch McConnell majority leader. However nationalized the election, these are a series of local

New York Post, by S.A. Miller and Bruce Golding    Original Article

US authorities increasingly suspect that the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was part of a suicide plot by a crew member, one of Congress’ top terrorism experts told The Post on Sunday. “There is a growing consensus that this was a suicide by the pilot or co-pilot and that they wanted to get as far away and land in the farthest and deepest part of the ocean,” said Rep. Pete King (R-LI), chair of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence. King said the scheme might have hinged on the hope that family members could still collect life insurance

Ten of the consulting firms that formed the core of the push to elect Mitt Romney — reaping a combined $1 billion in the process — have survived a tea party assault and are again among the highest-grossing and best-positioned players in Republican politics. The firms and their consultants have been paid more than $19.6 million for 2014 campaign work through January, according to a POLITICO analysis. They’ve also cemented relationships with some of the GOP’s rising stars, setting up the firms for even bigger paydays headed into the fall, when costly advertising and mail campaigns begin, and for a 2016

Viral Video Turns Senator

New York Times, by Ashley Parker    Original Article

WASHINGTON — When Senator Mitch McConnell’s re-election campaign released two-and-a-half minutes of video footage featuring him wordlessly smiling, it was most likely hoping to provide a friendly “super PAC’ with high-quality images of Mr. McConnell to use in ads. Instead, the campaign got a viral video sensation that exploded on the Internet last week, and even spawned its own term — “McConnelling.” The phenomenon started on Tuesday when the campaign put out a web video filled with genial images of Mr. McConnell, the Kentucky Republican and minority leader: Mr. McConnell smiling at the camera; Mr. McConnell smiling at his wife; Mr. McConnell

In East Harlem, my old neighborhood, two buildings collapsed because of a gas leak, scores are injured or missing, and at last count, 8 persons were killed in this tragedy. The 13th district Democrat Congressman, Charles Rangel, calls it ‘our community’s 9/11’ and that he’s "never had anything this horrific that’s happened in my community since I’ve been in Washington." Well, I don’t know where he was on September 11, 2001 but it obviously wasn’t in New York City. If he was in Washington, surely he would have been horrified by the Pentagon attack for on that day in America,

Talks in London to defuse Crimea crisis

LONDON — Talks between U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over the crisis in Ukraine reached an apparent impasse Friday, with Lavrov indicating afterward that the two had reached no “common vision” and Kerry saying that Moscow is determined to let a Crimean secession vote go ahead. Kerry told reporters that after six hours of talks with Lavrov, “the foreign minister made it clear that President [Vladimir] Putin is not prepared to make any decision regarding Ukraine until after the referendum on Sunday.” He referred to a Crimean vote on independence, which Crimean officials

Full disclosure I’m a bit of a fan of “Between Two Ferns,” which is to say it is sometimes very funny and sometimes not. That seems fitting given that it is on a site called “funny or die.” Sometimes it is funny and sometimes it dies. The same can be said of the president’s stint on the show. I think some of it is funny. Some of it is not. As for the complaint that it was unbecoming, I’m a bit torn. I don’t fret overly about the dignity of the presidency. President Clinton arguably did more to undermine the dignity of

Senator Rand Paul focused his highly popular speech last week at CPAC on his constitutional objections to U.S. national-security policy. But he has broader plans for a more libertarian, non-aggressive foreign policy and he’s considered a contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, so he laid out what President Paul would do about the Ukraine crisis in an op-ed for Time. As Jonathan Chait points out, he doesn’t seem to have thought this out very well. President Paul would suspend its plans for this summer’s G-8 summit — which President Obama’s already done. He would urge “our European allies to leverage

I´ve had my eye on Detroit´s bankruptcy proceedings because it is indicative of what´s to come for a lot of cities. How Detroit deals with its bankruptcy could also set a precedent for other cities forced to deal with the decisions of bankruptcy, satisfying pensions and debtors. Unfortunately, Detroit´s Emergency Manager Kevin Orr is shirking his responsibilities to the city and creditors by not making the hard choices to put Detroit on sound financial footing. As I wrote a few months ago, the key is the art. If you or I were to file for bankruptcy, we would be forced to sell

Democratic Donor Pleads Guilty

A major Democratic donor pleaded guilty on Monday to funneling millions of dollars in illegal campaign donations to federal and local politicians, including an unnamed 2008 presidential candidate believed to be Hillary Clinton. District of Columbia businessman Jeffrey Thompson, who federal prosecutors say financed a “shadow campaign” for D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray in 2010, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate campaign finance laws. Thompson claimed some of the candidates, including Gray, were aware of the illegal fundraising. According to prosecutors, Thompson funded a $600,000 shadow campaign “in coordination with and in support for a federal candidate for president of the United States.” The charges

"As scientists, it is not our role to tell people what they should do," it said as it began one of those sentences that you know will build to a "but". "But human-caused climate risks abrupt, unpredictable and potentially irreversible changes." In other words, the most distinguished scientists from the country with the world´s pre-eminent educational institutions were trying to shake humanity out of its complacency. Why weren´t their warnings leading the news? In one sense, the association´s appeal

The United States Department of Justice under Eric Holder has done nothing to Melowese Richardson 410 days after she admitted on camera that she committed multiple federal felonies by voting six times for President Obama’s reelection. Federal law makes it a felony to vote more than once for President. In fact, 42 U.S.C. Section 1973i(e) subjects Richardson to twenty-five years in federal prison for her six votes for Obama. ONCE upon a time I had a cat named Lucky, and the name fit. She turned up on our doorstep as a stray and stayed with us for 10 years, until her rather gruesome demise. (More about that later.) I liked her because she was a free spirit, and a survivor, going out for two, three, even five days, in all seasons. She’d show up when it suited her, waiting in the dark before dawn till I came downstairs and turned on my desk lamp. Then she’d make her presence known by rising up on her hind legs and gently

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,

First daughter Sasha Obama cut a stylish figure in jeans and shades as the Obama girls visited the Great Wall of China today. Michelle Obama, Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12, were left alone to explore the Mutianyu section of the historical landmark in the northern Beijing suburbs though Chinese police officers looked on protectively. The three walked a stretch of the wall that looks out to a massive rock inscription on a hillside that reads in Chinese: ´Loyal to Chairman Mao.´ The country has been fascinated by Mrs Obama´s ´elegance´ during the weeklong visit to the country to promote educational

First lady Michelle Obama told students that freedom of speech should be a universal right during her extravagant, no-press-allowed tour of China — a hypocritical move that will surely draw the ire of critics, according to an expert. “That is troublesome. That goes beyond hypocritical, and I think the American media and the international media has every right to call her and the Obama administration on that — that they permitted that to happen,” said Tom Whalen, a political history professor at Boston University. “It makes you shake your head, albeit sadly.” The first lady stopped at Peking University in Beijing yesterday

Most Supreme Court watchers are fixated these days on Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby—the important challenge to the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate scheduled for argument Tuesday. And why wouldn’t they be? With its potent mix of religion, sex, Obamacare, and prayerful corporations, it’s the blockbuster case of the term. It is also a crucial test of Chief Justice John Roberts’s leadership on the Supreme Court. Just two years ago, Roberts cast the deciding vote to largely uphold the Affordable Care Act. While the country remains divided over whether he acted like a traitor or a statesman, all would have to agree

But a new study of 212 black college students made available to Secrets found little open-mindedness: Blacks don´t like it when other blacks associate with whites, to the point of refusing help to an African-American experiencing “a run of bad luck” -- just because they have white friends. In a constituent meeting gone awry that was captured on shaky, amateur video, embattled Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) berated a group of local activists who oppose amnesty legislation, suggesting they were racist and saying they didn´t have “any damn facts.” “You´re telling me what people have told you? You don´t have any damn facts!” Ellmers exploded at one of the activists when he said that employers – who often claim a labor shortage to argue for amnesty – frequently don´t post job openings in that region.
