Police Chief James Craig: More guns
could equal less crime in Detroit

Mlive (Detroit), by Gus Burns

DETROIT, MI -- The Detroit Police Department has taken action in recent years through gun-buyback events to remove guns, legal or not, from the streets of Detroit. But first-year Police Chief James Craig takes a slightly different approach. He says in the hands of legal, law-abiding citizens, firearms "could be a deterrence to violent crime." That stance was challenged by Detroit resident Sandra Hines at the Detroit Police Commission meeting Thursday. "It could lead to vigilantism," said Hines, a member of the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality. "I just think that we already have the open-gun-carry law here and we have the stand-your-ground law, we don't need to have ... anybody encouraging citizens, and then, what is the definition of a law-abiding citizen, what does a law-abiding citizen look like ..."

Typical liberal.....the results don´t matter. What moves the liberal agenda is what counts. And allowing more guns does not move the anti gun agenda. So you in Detroit will just need to tolerate higher crime rates if it means more guns.

I would like to remind Ms. Hines that the term ´vigilante´ is "a word of Spanish origin meaning “watchman” or “guard.” The Latin root is vigil, which means to be awake or to be observant". [source - yourdictionary.com]
If that´s what she means, I agree with that portion of her comment.

Guns are a lot like drugs. Put them in the hands of good , responsible people and they don´t become murderous maniacs and addicts.

By the way the people inclined to murder and addiction already break the law. Making guns available to everyone tends to add to the number of responsible citizens who are armed.

I´m not saying tax money should be used to arm the poor. I´m saying get government out of the way, and educate the masses about how important, how vital, their vigilance, with personal involvement in law enforcement, is!

Here´s a story that goes under the category of the absurd. Beer Belly´s Bar on Van Born Road in Taylor has a sign posted outside that says "NO COLORS ALLOWED." Most people know what that means: No gang colors, and in this case, motor cycle gangs. But apparently somebody didn´t get it and and circulated a Facebook video suggesting it meant no "colored" or black customers, a throwback to the days of the South when some restaurants and businesses posted the sign "No Colored Allowed." Fox 2 reports that the video has prompted people to call the bar and threaten the help.

Judge appoints $600/hour
attorney to monitor excessive

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes today appointed a fee examiner to monitor legal fees in Detroit’s Chapter 9 bankruptcy. Rhodes named attorney Robert M. Fishman of the Chicago-based firm Shaw Fishman Glantz and Towbin to ensure the city’s legal fees and consulting bills don’t become exorbitant. Fishman will also be charged with making sure the fees are public information. In a sign of how expensive bankruptcies are, even the person responsible for preventing excessive fees will be well paid. Fishman’s typical hourly rate is $675. He’s discounting his hourly rate to $600 for Detroit.

Detroit Looks to Health
Law to Ease Costs

As Detroit enters the federal bankruptcy process, the city is proposing a controversial plan for paring some of the $5.7 billion it owes in retiree health costs: pushing many of those too young to qualify for Medicare out of city-run coverage and into the new insurance markets that will soon be operating under the Obama health care law. Officials say the plan would be part of a broader effort to save Detroit tens of millions of dollars in health costs each year, a major element in a restructuring package that must be approved by a bankruptcy judge.

Senators Joe Donnelly (D-IN) and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced a measure Wednesday that would change the definition of a full-time worker under the Affordable Care Act.The proposal is aimed at preventing workers from having their hours scaled back as businesses try to cope with the additional cost of providing insurance.Under the ACA, businesses with 50 or more employees must provide healthcare coverage to full-time workers. Currently, anyone who averages 30 hours or more per week is considered full-time. But, Donnelly says that’s not in line with reality.

Michigan City – A pair of new police cars are about to hit the streets of Michigan City, and you might be amazed what they look like. The city through South Shore Clean Cities has received a donation from the “THINK” Electric Car Company of two electric cars for the police department. “In January, I began to inquire about the cars and their possible use,” said Michigan City Police Sgt. Chris Yagelski. “I thought the uniqueness of the cars and the fact that they were 100% “green” led me to the possible creation of a new public relations tool for the police department. ONCE upon a time I had a cat named Lucky, and the name fit. She turned up on our doorstep as a stray and stayed with us for 10 years, until her rather gruesome demise. (More about that later.) I liked her because she was a free spirit, and a survivor, going out for two, three, even five days, in all seasons. She’d show up when it suited her, waiting in the dark before dawn till I came downstairs and turned on my desk lamp. Then she’d make her presence known by rising up on her hind legs and gently

First daughter Sasha Obama cut a stylish figure in jeans and shades as the Obama girls visited the Great Wall of China today. Michelle Obama, Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12, were left alone to explore the Mutianyu section of the historical landmark in the northern Beijing suburbs though Chinese police officers looked on protectively. The three walked a stretch of the wall that looks out to a massive rock inscription on a hillside that reads in Chinese: ´Loyal to Chairman Mao.´ The country has been fascinated by Mrs Obama´s ´elegance´ during the weeklong visit to the country to promote educational

First lady Michelle Obama told students that freedom of speech should be a universal right during her extravagant, no-press-allowed tour of China — a hypocritical move that will surely draw the ire of critics, according to an expert. “That is troublesome. That goes beyond hypocritical, and I think the American media and the international media has every right to call her and the Obama administration on that — that they permitted that to happen,” said Tom Whalen, a political history professor at Boston University. “It makes you shake your head, albeit sadly.” The first lady stopped at Peking University in Beijing yesterday

But a new study of 212 black college students made available to Secrets found little open-mindedness: Blacks don´t like it when other blacks associate with whites, to the point of refusing help to an African-American experiencing “a run of bad luck” -- just because they have white friends. In a constituent meeting gone awry that was captured on shaky, amateur video, embattled Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) berated a group of local activists who oppose amnesty legislation, suggesting they were racist and saying they didn´t have “any damn facts.” “You´re telling me what people have told you? You don´t have any damn facts!” Ellmers exploded at one of the activists when he said that employers – who often claim a labor shortage to argue for amnesty – frequently don´t post job openings in that region.
