Rig Evacuation
KATC, Lafayette, LA, by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:ruready?, 1/30/2014 10:24:10 PM

After an evacuation of a rig in the Gulf of Mexico, workers were still trying to secure a well as of 5:30 p.m. The rig is called Rowan Louisiana and it´s located in Vermilion block 356, which is about a hundred miles southwest of Lafayette. The company that operates the rig is called EnVen Energy Ventures. The company evacuated 41 employees, while the remaining 36 are working to stop the well from flowing.

Comments:
Roughnecks are the marines of the energy sector of America´s economy.

" EnVen Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Garrett said the evacuation is due to a loss of well control. As
workers were drilling, fluid began to flow to the
surface of the well."

Fluid?!

" The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement,
which is investigating, says the fluid flowing from the
well is natural gas."

This is horrible reporting, one of the worst written stroies I have ever read. It is as though they are trying very hard to not tell you this is a natural gas well, while, having to tell you at the same time. Yet, they fail to truly explain the issue, what was the root cause, and what the plan is. What is the outcome, except that they managed to divert the flow overboard, while trying to stop the flow?

All I can think is, there is another excuse for an increase in energy prices, one way or another. Am I too cynical?

Hope the workers make it out safely, after managing to stop the "fluid".

I agree with above, but, with all due respect, gas is a perfectly good fluid.

Loss of well control and "Fluid" flow means that the well took a "Kick" or several. Some quantity of natural gas entered the wellbore at depth due to a light spot in the drilling fluid column, a fissure or formation feature allowing a big gulp of mud to be absorbed into the formation or the pumps being off during a bit change or connection. At depth the hydrostatic head (total weight of all of the fluid in the drill bore fluid column) controls entry of formation fluid. If a gallon/barrel of gas enters in to the stream at depth in expands as it moves towards the service because the combined weight of drilling fluids are less...if/when it displaces that exponential number of gallons/barrels at the surface it can allow that same "Larger" amount of Gas/formation fluid to then enter the drillstring which then moves to toward the surface increasing in volume as the pressures controlling IT are lower. That does not mean the Well is uncontrolled..there are several levels and layers of shutting it in, increasing mud weight, bridging additives to seal the formation porosity and flocculants to stop the intrusions and the well is then "circulated" breaking the gas out and flaring it off until full control and a uniform mud stream/hydrostatic head is re-established. After which drilling is either resumed, a liner installed or the section of Hole cemented. This is not necessarily any major issue, it´s all part of the process.

Thanks No 3. I assume the evacuation was of all personnel not needed to regain control of the well. I presume the escaping gas can present a hazard if it gets released where it doesn´t belong.

A week and a half ago, when House Republican leaders realized that their own conservative members might align to defeat legislation protecting Medicare physicians from a big automatic pay cut, they took the unusual step of cutting them out of the tangle altogether. While negotiations were ongoing, the Majority Leader, Eric Cantor, darted on to the House floor and, after brief consultation with Democratic leaders, cleared the Medicare "doc fix" by voice vote—a procedure that´s typically reserved for fast tracking uncontroversial legislation. The yeahs and nays were not recorded. A bill that divided the GOP conference, and might very well

With swimsuit season right around the corner, a new science-based, anti-diet book offers the most enabling advice we’ve heard this year: Those thunder thighs you hate so much might be key to long life. “The Obesity Paradox” presents compelling evidence that those with excess baggage might be healthier and better able to fight off diseases than normal-weight counterparts. Conversely, the “thin and unfit” waifs have the worst body types for long-term health. Though obesity remains a risk factor of “epidemic portions” — more, some researchers say, than smoking or alcoholism— associated with heart disease, stroke, Type-2 diabetes,

Wenzhou - Thousands of Chinese Christians have mounted an extraordinary, round-the-clock defence of a church in a city known as the ´Jerusalem of the East´ after Communist Party officials threatened to bulldoze their place of worship. In an episode that underlines the fierce and long-standing friction between China´s officially atheist Communist Party and its rapidly growing Christian congregation, Bible-carrying believers this week flocked to the Sanjiang church in Wenzhou hoping to protect it from the bulldozers. Their 24-hour guard began earlier this week when a demolworshippers say cost around 30 million yuan (£2.91

At a Glance: The current cockfighting law contains language that makes it difficult to enforce because it specifies a certain species of chicken. Proposed legislation would fix the loophole by expanding it to include any kind of foul forced into fighting for sport. It also increases penalties by putting them on par with dog fighting. The Louisiana Senate Judiciary C Committee advanced the bill Tuesday (April 1), but not without some debate from a St. Landry Parish lawmaker about ramifications of the proposed law revisions on a sport he called "chicken boxing." The bill: Senate Bill 523, sponsored by Sen.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Wednesday blasted the Obama administration’s decision to extend enrollment in the healthcare law’s insurance exchange for some people. “What the hell is this, a joke?” Boehner said at his weekly press conference. He was responding to the administration’s announcement on Tuesday evening that people who had begun the process of signing up for insurance through the federal exchanges would have until mid-April to do so, instead of March 31. The Speaker called the move “another deadline made meaningless,” adding it to a litany of unilateral changes to the law that the administration has made.

Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development.
