Jimmy Kimmel Live Gets Pedestrian
Reactions to SOTU… Before It Happened

Mediaite, by Matt Wilstein

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 1/30/2014 10:57:04 AM

As he’s done before for the Inauguration and the Super Bowl, Jimmy Kimmel sent his roving correspondent out onto Hollywood Boulevard in the days before last night’s State of the Union to get pedestrians’ reactions to the speech that hadn’t happened yet. The more times the late night hosts pulls his “Lie Witness News” prank on the somehow unsuspecting public, the less surprising it is that people have all kinds of opinions on something they blatantly haven’t seen. From House Speaker John Boehner falling asleep to President Barack Obama faking a heart attack at the end of his speech, these

It is sad and pathetic. Nobody said it better than Churchill: the argument against democracy is a talk in the street with the average voter.

Of course, the segment was for comic relief; however, it would be interesting to know what the ratio between those whose responses were shown, in contrast to the number whose responses were either, I didn´t watch or the SOTU has not been given yet.

In any case, Pretty Funny.

Always funny, but Sal the Stockbroker did it best when he interviewed Harlem residents prior to the 2008 election. Attaching McCain´s accomplishments and agenda to the black candidate, everyone interviewed agreed that those were the exact reasons that they were going to vote for obama. It was frightening.

NY health boss resigning after agency

State Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah is stepping down amid criticism over his agency’s failure to conduct regular inspections of abortion clinics and for delays in releasing a long-awaited fracking study. Word of Shah’s resignation late Wednesday came as the Health Department announced it was scrambling to inspect 25 abortion clinics ”within the coming days” — after The Post reported that it hadn’t visited many of them in more than a decade. The abortion clinic controversy also became a political hot potato for Gov. Cuomo when GOP gubernatorial

MIAMI — Two Florida doctors who received the nation’s highest Medicare reimbursements in 2012 are both major contributors to Democratic Party causes, and they have turned to the political system in recent years to defend themselves against suspicions that they may have submitted fraudulent or excessive charges to the federal government. The pattern of large Medicare payments and six-figure political donations shows up among several of the doctors whose payment records were released for the first time this week by the Department of Health and Human Services. For years, the department refused to make the data public, and finally did so

I’m glad Jonathan Chait told us that his poorly argued, slightly paranoid New York magazine cover story, “Why Race Has Been the Real Story of Obama’s Presidency All Along,” was written before his epic wrangle with Ta-Nehisi Coates over Paul Ryan and the “culture” of black poverty. Because otherwise, it could only be read as the self-pitying rant of someone who has lost a historically defining argument – someone who has been “sonned,” to use Coates’ term — and is still too hurt to have access to his powers of reason. Even with the knowledge that Chait’s cover story predates his

Uber Is Kicking Its City-Domination Plan

I´ve long had a hunch that Uber, the ubiquitous car-on-demand service, is gearing up for something much bigger than just taking people from point A to point B. The company clearly wants to use its car-service foothold to expand into a large, multi-armed transportation hub for cities — a "digital mesh," in one of its investor´s words, that can take anything anywhere, immediately, with a few taps of an app. Tomorrow, Uber is tipping its hand by launching an experimental line of Uber couriers in Manhattan who will deliver packages on foot or by bike for as little as $15. A few weeks ago, the liberal comedian Bill Maher and conservative strategist and pundit Bill Kristol had a brief spat on Maher’s HBO show, putatively over what instigated the tea party but ultimately over the psychic wound that has divided red America and blue America in the Obama years. The rise of the tea party, explained Maher in a let’s-get-real moment, closing his eyes for a second the way one does when saying something everybody knows but nobody wants to say, “was about a black president.” Both Maher and Kristol carry themselves with a weary cynicism that allows them to

My first published column was in a local paper opposing the Equal Rights Amendment for the same reasons that Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative lawyer, campaigned on. As ambiguously written, the ERA, would eliminate the men-only draft requirement, repeal protective laws like sexual assault and eliminate the tendency for mothers to obtain custody over their children in divorce cases. Ironically, one of the arguments that helped sink the amendment from ratification was the fear that single-sex bathrooms would no longer be permitted. In addition, opponents of the amendment also warned that it would lead to abortion on demand and same-sex marriages.

LONDON - Peaches Geldof, the wild-child second daughter of concert organizer Bob Geldof who worked as a model, a television presenter and a fashion writer and filled the pages of British tabloids with her late-night antics, has died at age 25. There was no immediate word on the cause of her death at her home in Wrotham, Kent, southeast England. Her father said in a statement Monday: "Peaches has died. We are beyond pain." "She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us," he said. "Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. How is this possible that we will not see her again? How is that bearable? We loved her and will cherish her forever."

How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. This is a soothing interpretation, as it begins from the hypothesis that the contest between conservatives and the GOP elite is a family feud. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally

A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact.
