Snake Bite Costs North Carolina
Couple $89,000 Hospital Bill

Time Magazine, by Maya Rhodan

Original Article

Posted By:Bad Dog, 1/30/2014 8:50:07 AM

Subhead: The couple visited the emergency room in August to receive treatment. The sticker shock comes as Americans continue to battle high health care costs following the introduction of the American Care Act /snip/ A couple in North Carolina is speaking out against hospital pricing after receiving a bill for an 18-hour emergency-room stay which they say cost them a whopping $89,000. The Charlotte Observer reports that Eric Ferguson visited a hospital near his home in Mooresville, N.C. over the summer after being bitten by a snake.

Comments:
This story is written in a very deceptive way. They paid a fraction of the total bill. But I post because of the subhead: ´´American´´ Care Act? Has the ACA now been renamed, again?

OP: I saw that and thought, ignorance or deceit?
The word "affordable" becoming laughing stock already?

The real take-away from the story is that hospital prices are completely made up. The numbers on the bill have no connection to reality.

Typical scare tactic of the left we are all just one snake bite away from bankruptcy from being thrown out on the street. Good grief that´s all the leftist msm does all day long is tell us how bad everything is and how we need big government to protect us idiots from ourselves.

"If we did not start with the list prices we have, we would not end up with enough revenue to remain in operation. … Our costs for providing uncompensated care are partially covered by higher bills for other patients."

The first part of this quote is idiotic because a high list price doesn´t get a hospital one penney more from any insurance. The second part of the quote comes closer to the truth but should be stated as "we rob you to pay for the last guy who didn´t pay." And the new government medical play doesn´t address this problem at all but then it wasn´t meant to.

I have had many simple chest Xrays in the last 15 years and none were billed at over $100.00 until the last one in Nov. 2013 which was billed at $789.10! I called to check the charge and was told that a 2 view, front and side 10 second Xray is $789.10 !
Under Obamacare, we are going to be denied even the basics with inflated charges like this.

How about this proposal?
Fixed prices that EVERYONE pays, NO discounts. This stupid fake price scheme does nothing but anger customers, and in the end, does NOT increase revenue over what you would get by setting reasonable prices (with a fair profit, of course) and STICKING TO THEM REGARDLESS.

One problem is that the antivenin (CroFab) used in treatment of pit viper (rattlesnake, cottonmouth, copperhead) snakebites in America, has one source, making the medicine very expensive. The FDA either hasn´t or won´t end the monopoly on CroFab´s sheep-based production. I thought the price for one vial was around $3,500--over twenty might be necessary to save the snakebite vitim--but as CroFab is hard to get, its price will be whatever the market will bear.

As of 2009 the manufacturing of coral snake antivenin ended here. Although coral snake envenomations are rare, they are always life threatening, as they paralyze the diaphragm, which stops respiration and causes death.

Also, there are 77 distinctive species of rattlesnake in the Americas, and some (Southern Pacific rattlesnake and Mojave Green rattlesnake, which can be found in Southern California and Arizona) have developed, in addition to the blood destroying hemotoxins, significant amounts of neurotoxins, which funstion like the coral snake´s and the cobra´s.

People trying to kill or catch the snakes are just about always the ones to get bitten. If you see a venomous snake, just stay away from it. Getting bitten isn´t worth the horrible experience. And believe me, it´s horrible.

Will anyone get past that "ain´t it awful?" headline and read this?

Though their Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance reduced the bill to a little over $20,000, according to the Charlotte Observer, and they only ended up paying about $5,400 to cover their deductible and co-pay, the couple said they were shocked by the price of treatment.

Many are "shocked" by the price of medical treatment. Not many pay it.

Corrections: victim, function. It´s overcast today and sometimes I refuse to turn on the desk lamp.

And #6 makes the most important point of all concerning the soaring prices of medical care: "Out of touch pricing is a direct result of third party pay." Exactly right. As long as the government and insurance companies pay for most medical procedures, expect prices to get sillier and sillier. It´s happened in other places, too, such as education. The government is in a thousand areas in which they have no conceivable or constitutional business. Washington DC´s leech classes need to be cleaned out. It´s just organized, legalized thievery up there.

Off topic, but I hope #11 knows that "simple chest X-rays" are seriously bad for the body. The radiation dose is large. Frequent X-rays (as were done periodically in the past as a matter of routine) are definitely not recommended.

There is a growing volume of new evidence from numerous sources in the Middle East — mostly affiliated with the Syrian opposition and its sponsors and supporters — which makes a very strong case, based on solid circumstantial evidence, that the Aug. 21 chemical strike in the Damascus suburbs was indeed a premeditated provocation by the Syrian opposition.

Why does Hillary Clinton hate America? That is the question that should be on everyone’s mind as she embarks on a worldwide tour to plug her forthcoming memoir. Check out this THE POLITICO article [emphasis mine]: Hillary Clinton discussed her work at the State Department, called for young women not to take criticisms personally and rapped the media for treating powerful women with a double standard at the kickoff of “Women in the World” in New York City Thursday night. Clinton’s appearance on a panel with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde, moderated by New York Times columnist Tom Friedman, ran

A triumphant President Barack Obama declared Tuesday his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better´ in a Rose Garden press conference. But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night.

Following her speech at the “Women of the World Summit” in New York City on Thursday, Hillary Clinton was asked this simple question by a moderator: “When you look at your time as Secretary of State, what are you most proud of? And what do you feel was unfinished, and maybe have another crack at one day?” Here are a few excerpts from her response: ”Look, I really see my role as Secretary, in fact leadership in general in a democracy, as a relay race. A 54-year-old white man has been left barely clinging to life after he was brutally beaten by a group of black men when he got out of his car to check on a young black boy he accidentally hit. Steve Utash, from suburban Roseville, was beaten into a coma Wednesday by an angry mob in a poverty-stricken Detroit neighborhood after David Harris, 10, ran in front of his truck on a busy street, but police insist the incident was not racially motivated. The gang also stole his wallet before leaving him for dead. Utash is in extremely critical

In Dearborn, Mich., home to over 40,000 Americans of Arab descent, some Muslim parents have complained about flyers handed out at public schools advertising an Easter egg hunt at a local Presbyterian church. The Muslim parents assert that the flyers – emblazoned with the word “Eggstravaganza!” – violate the separation of church and state widely ascribed to the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, reports the Detroit Free Press. Students at three Dearborn elementary schools received the flyers. A large number of Muslim students attend the schools. The “Eggstravaganza!” is scheduled to take place on April 12 event at Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney has sworn off running again for elected office, but Americans have certainly heard that one before. Speculation that Romney might run again has largely been stoked by the reunion he planned to host last month in Park City, Utah, for members of his 2012 campaign and debate team and a string of recent public appearances. He has appeared on TV news shows 12 times in the past six months. That’s essentially on pace with Michigan GOP Rep.
