State of the Union moot
as Obama becomes irrelevant

Washington Times, by Joseph Curl

CNN had a countdown clock, like Cape Canaveral launching a rocket to Mars. “2 hours 19 minutes 44 seconds” the clock said, ticking down to The Big Moment. So many talking heads appeared at once it was like a murmuration of starlings (except they flew in a giant loop because they could only turn left). John King worked “The Magic Wall,” diagramming congressional districts like Jon Gruden dissecting a play. Wolf Blitzer in the Situation Room took us LIVE! to THE SITUATION — President Obama leaving the White House on his way to the Capitol (assuming he actually was in the

obama FTA: “Let’s make this a year of action. That’s what most Americans want — for all of us in this chamber to focus on their lives, their hopes, their aspirations.”

100% WRONG, you dunce, get OUT of my life. That´s the trouble with you communists, marxists and socialists, you think everyone is as stupid and helpless as your base voters and can´t accomplish a thing without Big Brother being in charge of every aspect of our lives. Not everyone is one of your beloved Lo-Fos. Go away.

The State of the Union speech may be irrelevant, but unfortunately Obama is not. Try watching NBC News some night, if you want to see what is left OUT that is important, from the IRS scandals to the latest worries about the JV squad Obama vanquished (no, the Homeland is NOT safe) so as long as Brian Williams et al. keep off the subject and protect the man, as long as he has a pen and a phone, and as long as we have a chief justice like John Roberts (isn´t he embarrassed about that Obamacare "tax" yet?), Obama, lame duck as he is, will continue to lay down "laws" that will destroy this country. So much for voting on theory and appearance, what you see rather than what the man does/did.

Global Warming? Not Always

BOULDER, Colo. — California is now in the midst of the third year of one of its worst droughts on record. As our planet gradually warms from our rampant burning of fossil fuels, it’s only natural to wonder what role climate change has played in California’s troubles. The answer is this: At present, the scientific evidence does not support an argument that the drought there is appreciably linked to human-induced climate change. The drought has many attributes of historical droughts over that region — in particular, a lack of storms and rainfall that would normally arrive from the Pacific Ocean with considerable

On Monday night into Tuesday morning, two dozen Senate Democrats -- members of the party´s newly-formed Climate Action Task Force -- plan to hold a all-night, filibuster-like talkathon on the issue of global warming. "Congress must act," Hawaii Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz, a leader of the group, said in a statement. "On Monday night we´re going to show the growing number of senators who are committed to working together to confront climate change." Senator after senator will undoubtedly join Schatz in insisting that Congress must act. But the Democratic talkathon is not about any action in particular. It´s not being staged

At the end of 2013, Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz had some nasty words for yours truly. Irked that I used my Twitter feed to criticize her ObamaCare propaganda efforts, Wasserman Schultz snarked back at me: ‘‘Thanks for spreading the word! You’ll be eating them next year. ?#GetCovered.” Classy as always. And completely wrong-headed as usual. Less than three months into 2014, how’s dutiful Debbie and her Dear Leader’s pet government takeover program doing? The most recent retreat measures — call it the ObamaCare Endangered 2014 Midterm Democrats’ Rescue Plan — include: • Allowing insurers for two extra years to continue selling plans

Have you heard the news? Condoleezza Rice lacks “moral authority.” She fails to meet the standards of “exemplary citizenship” and she does not have what it takes to “inspire” graduating college seniors. That crazy thinking comes from the New Brunswick Faculty Council of Rutgers University. They voted last week to ask university leadership to cancel Rice’s invitation to be this year’s Commencement Speaker and receive an honorary degree.Yes, apparently the first African-American woman to serve as National Security Adviser and the nation’s Secretary of State doesn’t have what it takes to be honored by Rutgers.

Is the CNN series "Chicagoland" a compelling look at this town? Yes. I was given an advance look at the first four episodes of the eight-part series that premiered Thursday night. It shows the real Chicago, not some fantasy Chicago, not the sanitized postcard downtown, that theme-park-of-a-city that the Daleys pushed out to national audiences through their media contacts for years. "Chicagoland" depicts the city we know, beautiful but with warts and broken places. And throughout, there is drama and conflict, from the painful closing of public schools to the senseless gang wars. There are heroes in it and there

House of Cards, the Netflix series about a lethally unscrupulous Washington politician, is a wonderful show, but it does sometimes stretch the limits of credulity. I have no trouble believing that a Democratic congressman would push a reporter in front of a train, but the idea that anyone in the press would try to expose him for it is flat-out ridiculous. After all, Barack Obama has been pushing reporters under the bus for six years and nobody’s said a word. Ah, well. If the show gives leftist politicos nightmares about being held accountable for their actions by American journalists, they

Last spring, a 48-year-old mother of two young girls in Colorado discovered that she had colon cancer. Her surgeon and oncologist disagreed about whether she needed chemotherapy. So a friend recommended she go to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for a second opinion. Just before she booked her plane ticket, a representative from MD Anderson called, informing her that its oncologists were outside her insurance company’s network and that she should bring $10,000 for the consultation. Many Americans can relate to this. Last year, a Kaiser survey reported that almost all individuals and families with employer-sponsored health insurance have

Democrats have adopted a dismissive, almost bemused posture when it comes to the conservative fixation with the 2012 attack on the diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya, confident in the knowledge that the facts bear little resemblance to what they see as the right´s conspiracy theories. On one hand, they´re right. Countless congressional committee reports, administration probes, and journalistic investigations have cleared then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of any wrongdoing, and found there was little else the Obama administration could have done once the attacks began. "Ghazi" has become shorthand for a partisan-driven scandal. But Democrats are in denial if they think Benghazi

Lerner, the former director of exempt organizations at the IRS, is perhaps the key figure in the IRS scandal. Not only did she hold a crucial position, she was the official picked to apologize to the nation on May 10, 2013, for the IRS’s improper handling of Tea Part tax exemption applications. I’ve been in Brooklyn so long, I remember when Spike Lee lived here. When I was in Fort Greene in the late ’90s, living in the predominantly Caribbean Long Island University dorms, our basketball team landed Richie Parker, a fantastic player who came to LIU after he pled guilty to a sexual assault charge and bigger programs dropped him. Parker was explosive, the Blackbirds made the NCAA tournament for the first time in 13 years — and Lee suddenly became a regular at the gym, where he’d stay just long enough to be seen. President Obama, like Jimmy Carter before him, is finally getting a late education in how the world works. It’s not how he wants it to be. The world is a dangerous place, where history and greed trump good intentions. Words are cheap. Red lines and vague warnings to bad actors mean little to men who scheme for power, strategic advantage and territory. Vladimir Putin, communist or not, is one tough Russian. He wants to maximize his nation’s prestige, power and interests and appears to be doing well at it. Barack Obama and his feckless secretary of state were all that was standing in

An earthquake hit Colorado politics on Wednesday afternoon, and the tremors are being felt in Washington, D.C. Rep. Cory Gardner, a second-term Republican from the small town of Yuma on Colorado’s eastern plains, announced (or at least it was reported that he was about to announce) his intention to seek the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Mark Udall rather than seek an essentially certain re-election. Gardner’s move puts Udall, already struggling against barely-known Republicans, in a position where the next polls will likely show him losing his seat to the quarter-century-younger Gardner.

The reunion of Romney´s political brain trust comes amid a burst of positive buzz about the former Massachusetts governor -- from favorable reviews of "MITT," the Netflix documentary about his campaigns, to chatter among some powerful GOP donors about another Romney presidential campaign in 2016.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.—Rand Paul handily won the presidential straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday, one gauge of the Republican base’s mood less than two years before the 2016 primary season kicks off. The Kentucky senator received 31 percent, far ahead of second place Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who received 11 percent. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished third with 9 percent, ahead of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who received 8 percent. The announcement came at the end of the group’s annual three-day confab. Organizers said that 2,459 attendees voted on computer kiosks.

The most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. So the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet well into its flight Saturday morning over the South China Sea has led aviation experts to assume that whatever happened was quick and left the pilots no time to place a distress call. (Snip) The problem had to be big enough, he said, to stop the plane´s transponder from broadcasting its location, although the transponder can be purposely shut off from the cockpit.
