The State of Liberalism
National Review Online, by John Yoo

Original Article

Posted By:Desert Fox, 1/29/2014 12:22:24 PM

Read President Obama’s State of the Union version 6.0, and one theme comes into sharp relief: the bankruptcy of liberalism. President Obama’s speech asked for this and that, ranging from anti-obesity programs to gun control to a minimum wage for government contractors. It made open pleas for the support of different interest groups, including recent immigrants and women. It claimed achievements for which the White House was not responsible, such as the addition of millions of new jobs in the recovery and America’s growing energy independence. Obama’s State of the Union reads like a shopping list while those of earlier presidents

One can point in many directions and highlight a failed leader in just about any of them. One in particular I find similar to obama is Thaksin Shinawatra who was at one time the Prime Minister of Thailand. He was a rabid populist too. His, and subsequently his sister´s, political base consists of the ones he showered with gifts of a dubious nature but gifts none the less. His populist zeal was rewarded by being the subject of a coup some years ago and his subsequent figurative banishment from his country. I say this because he strikes me as particularly insidious in his behavior toward his country as does obama. Thaksin still attempts to run the country through his sister Yingluck.

A problem as I see it is not that obama will be the focus of a coup to get him out of the Presidency but rather his back door influence after he leaves office in three years. He is our president solely due to the influence of the liberal media and the low information, and likely to stay that way, voters. These people will continue to be the squeaky liberal wheel agitating for more bread and circuses. How we face this future threat will determine whether this country survives intact or not.

I am optimistic but not very....

John Yoo lays out the case for liberalism´s bankruptcy well. What he doesn´t realize is that liberalism is inherently self-destructive as well. The MSM and all of the Øbamanoids that support him in office picked him because of his disdain for this country and they want to see the fundamental change he promised, not to see the country do well.

Conservative Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul top the biggest Tea Party presidential poll yet, while moderates New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are dumped at the bottom, undermining their hopes of being 2016 crossover candidates. The online poll of 62,000 grassroots activists provided exclusively to Secrets finds that conservatives and Tea Party organizers stand fully behind the heroes of their movement, including outspoken surgeon Ben Carson, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. But the poll for nation´s largest Tea Party group, TheTeaParty.net, and the influential conservative organization Contract from America drenched

Speaker John Boehner will bring a clean debt ceiling bill to the floor today, marking the end of an era in which House Republicans sought spending cuts and reforms in equal or greater amount to the increase in the debt ceiling. President Obama and congressional Democrats had said they were opposed to even discussing spending cuts in the context of the debt ceiling. But Republicans couldn´t even come together with their own plan. “It´s a recognition that we don´t have 218 votes. When you don´t have 218 votes, you have nothing,” Boehner said in a press conference. House leadership began the effort

On Tuesday former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin turns 50, and many of her Republican colleagues have joined together to make a birthday video. In the clip posted Sunday to Youtube by She-PAC, a political action committee focused on electing conservative women to office, Arizona Sen. John McCain, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Newt Gingrich, Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), and other notable Republicans warmly wish Palin a happy birthday and thank her for her contributions to the conservative movement. Highlights from the video: Condoleezza Rice: “Congratulations on making it to 50, I’ve been there a long time. It’s really okay.” Phil Robertson

A fresh start for Hillary

WASHINGTON — As Hillary Rodham Clinton mulls a second presidential bid, liberals are closely watching whether the onetime supporter of the Iraq war moves to the left or straddles the center. Democrats say economic issues such as raising the minimum wage and protecting Social Security have become paramount for anyone aiming to lead the party after years of tough economic times. During the 2008 primary campaign against Barack Obama, Clinton was hurt by her stand on the Iraq war while she was a senator. But she burnished her image among party loyalists during four years at the State Department in the

They´ve signed a letter encouraging Clinton to jump in. They´ve gone to early nominating states to tout her candidacy — while sometimes turning down their own invitations to those same states for fear of sending signals that they´re

Global warming hasn’t stopped, the heat’s

Powerful winds in the Pacific Ocean, which have driven surface heat deep underwater, could be the reason behind the current ‘pause’ in global warming. This is according to a joint Australian and U.S. study which has looked at why there has been a slowdown in the planet’s global average surface temperature over the past decade. Their research shows that trade winds in central and eastern parts of the Pacific have caused warm surface water to sink to the ocean´s depths, reducing the amount of heat in the atmosphere. Last year, scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the pace of

A Nasa spacecraft orbiting the red planet has found the ´strongest indication´ that liquid water may still exist on the Martian surface. Images taken by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reveal ´finger-like´ markings on Martian slopes. Experts say that although they do not yet have a ´smoking gun´, they believe the markings are made by minerals which could not have left without flowing liquid. ´The features are dark, finger-like markings that advance down some Martian slopes when temperatures rise,´ Nasa said. The new clues include corresponding seasonal changes in iron minerals on the same slopes and a survey of ground temperatures and other traits at active

´ObamaCare" is useful shorthand for the Affordable Care Act not least because the law increasingly means whatever President Obama says it does on any given day. His latest lawless rewrite arrived on Monday as the White House decided to delay the law´s employer mandate for another year and in some cases maybe forever. ObamaCare requires businesses with 50 or more workers to offer health insurance to their workers or pay a penalty, but last summer the Treasury offered a year-long delay until 2015 despite having no statutory authorization. Like the individual mandate, the employer decree is central to ObamaCare´s claim of

Big Government: A 20-year-old memo says Hillary Clinton backed a single-payer socialist health system, believing ObamaCare-like mega-regulation to be "a crock." As president, she´d double down on government control. It´s buried over 60 paragraphs into Alana Goodman´s investigative article in the Washington Free Beacon this week about unpublished documents exposing Clinton´s ruthlessness. Among the papers of Hillary adviser and close friend Diane Blair at the University of Arkansas is an account of a Feb. 23, 1993 White House dinner Blair attended. The first lady had just launched her secretive health care task force pushing a "managed competition" approach to reform. Hillary commented "at

Is Barack Obama trying to shift alliances in the Middle East away from traditional allies and toward Iran? Robert Kaplan, author and geopolitical analyst for the Stratford consulting firm, thinks so. In a realclearworld.com article, Kaplan argues that the Obama administration sees the recently elected Iranian President Hassan Rouhani "as a potential Deng Xiaoping, someone from within the ideological solidarity system who can, measure-by-stealthy-measure, lead his country away from ideology and toward internal reform." Such a development, he goes on, is "something that could, in turn, result in an understanding with the West." That of course is not what the president and Secretary

Deja Vu: As the U.S. defense posture continues to slump, several onetime allies are getting nervous about growing threats and starting to rearm. Not to be alarmist, but isn´t that what happened just before World War II? It´s no exaggeration to say that President Obama, by slashing defense spending, is encouraging other nations to step up their arms programs to fill the growing void left by a shrinking U.S. military. The numbers are stark. According to a recent report by the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, U.S. defense outlays hit a post-World War II high in 2010. Since then, after inflation,

It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W. Bush settled his mind by clearing brush in Texas, Reagan at his ranch in Santa Barbara. Obama unfortunately finds the brush already cleared in Martha´s Vineyard and Hawaii.)

Michelle Obama chose Venezuelan-American designer Carolina Herrera for the gown she wore Tuesday to the state dinner honoring French President Francois Hollande. The formal, ornate style of the sumptuous gown by Ms Herrera reflected French aesthetics, from the intricate beaded black bodice, to the train and full skirt in a color called liberty blue. ´From the White House to Versailles it´s not that far,´ said Susan Swimmer, author of Michelle Obama: First Lady of Fashion and Style. ´It´s much more keeping in a French aesthetic than I´ve seen her wear before. President Obama has repeatedly suspended parts of the Affordable Care Act without the consent of Congress. The latest unilateral action happened Monday night, when the administration announced another delay of the employer mandate, the law´s provision that businesses with more than 50 employees must provide their employees with insurance starting in 2014 or pay large fines. In July, the president decreed the mandate wouldn´t be enforced at all in 2014, and last night administration officials declared that businesses with 50 to 99 employees wouldn´t be penalized in 2015. Republicans have denounced such actions as "lawless." But if what the president has

Michelle Obama´s lust for luxury has always been a bit of a problem for her husband and Democrats in general. Jetting off to five star resorts with a large entourage has too much dissonance with the rhetoric denouncing inequality currently in favor with the left. But the First Lady has now outdone herself, and because a picture is worth a thousand words, the damage may be a bit more serious than the occasional grumble over designer shoes and livin´ large. After all, millions of Americans are mired in unemployment, underemployment, and hopelessness. So in the face of all this, Michelle
