Drone Surveillance Leads to
Man’s Arrest, Prison Sentence

National Review Online, by Andrew Johnson

Original Article

Rodney Brossart has a unique distinction, although it may not be one he wanted. The North Dakota man became the first person to be sentenced as a result of drone surveillance in the United States. Brossart’s three-year sentence comes following a 116-hour stand-off with a SWAT team on his ranch in 2011. The team was called in after Brossart resisted arrest for not returning livestock from a neighboring farm that had wandered on to his property; Brossart and his three sons then engaged in the stand-off before authorities brought in the Predator drone. On loan from Customs and Border Patrol, the drone

A little further searching reveals the whole incident stemmed from Brossart wanting to be renumerated for the feed his neighbors cows ate while they were on his property. Brossart then held the cattle (cownapped?) when the neighbor didn´t pay.

Why this elevated to a SWAT Team callout and drones from Gov agencies is the question. Used to be, one (1) trooper or deputy would handle things like this, easily. Now, its jump right to troops having stand-offs with citizens over every little thing.

City´s and large towns are covered completely by cameras, that leaves only the countryside......It is far cheaper to have a drone surveil a few counties than it is to pay for a helicopter or even police......I fully expect for state police organizations and highway patrols to go big time into drones.

Any neighbor that wants to charge $$ for grass or hay [surely not grain was available] to another neighbor who´s cows got out needs to be dealt with... A home-baked pie or cake usually was enough in our experience... There were too many nights and early morning calls where more than three were out... usually too close to a road... And sometimes my Dad would plow a neighbor´s lane before he plowed ours.

#8, you may never have experienced the third or fourth year of a drought, with a ranching neighbor who doesn´t have enough grass for his too-large herd, won´t help keep the fences up and doesn´t mind when all those cows drift over to your own carefully hoarded grass and stingily dispensed shrinking stocks of hay. Yes, the first two or three times would mean a phone call and a friendly agreement to not let it happen again. The fifth, the tenth, the twentieth time, you would feel just as the man in this story did. Most ranchers would pen the cows and hold them for a bit of reimbursement. A standoff with local authorities is going a bit far, however.

The search for debris from missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 has not turned up any evidence of a crash, but it has trained the world’s gaze on thousands of pieces of junk floating on the ocean’s surface. Much of that debris could be made up of plastics, old appliances or parts of homes that have washed away from fragile communities, and cargo containers from ships, according to ocean advocacy group One World One Ocean. Check out some of the facts about what’s really floating in our oceans: The Pacific Garbage Patches: The most heavily-researched and well-known example of plastic pollution in the ocean

The news media were ecstatic when the government said in January that the economy grew by 3.2 percent in the final three months of 2013. It was convincing proof, they said on the nightly news, that the economy had finally recovered from its chronic lethargy. However, according to a revised estimate released Thursday by the U.S. Commerce Department´s Bureau of Economic Analysis, that 3.2 percent figure was a wild exaggeration. The U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), the broadest measure of our country’s entire economic output, grew no more than 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter — a pitifully low growth rate for

You may remember Leland Yee. He´s a state senator from San Francisco who´s appeared in this column a couple of times before: in 2009, when he objected (unsuccessfully) to the appointment of a University of California chancellor who´d been linked to a possible scandal at the University of Illinois; and in 2011, when he demanded an apology from Rush Limbaugh for "mimicking the Chinese language" in a segment mocking Hu Jintao, then "paramount leader" of communist China. The former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, John Sandweg, published an op-ed this week calling, in effect, for the abolition of immigration law. Sandweg, a criminal defense attorney and Arizona crony of Janet Napolitano, wrote in relation to President Obama’s directive that ICE reexamine enforcement policies with an eye toward making them more “humane.” To that end, he says ICE “should eliminate ‘non-criminal re-entrants and immigration fugitives’ as a priority category for deportation.” What that means is that people who have been formally deported and then sneak back in should be exempted from further attempts at removing them, even though

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In any organization as large as the United States government, some things are bound to slip through the cracks. But how about an entire building? How about tens of thousands of buildings - all sitting empty at taxpayer expense. No one has been coming to work in the USDA Cotton Annex building for some time. Just blocks from the White House, it´s been vacant for six years. It´s one of 77,000 empty buildings the government continues to own and maintain, costing taxpayers $1.5 billion a year in electric bills, roof repairs, and other monthly costs. People are always complaining that there´s nothing but bad news out there, but they´re wrong. Market researchers estimate that U.S. chewing gum sales have fallen 11% in the past four years and that the slide will keep on going. I can think of nothing more inspiring in recent history. Having worked for four summers in a bubble-gum factory while in college—and having never once thought about touching a stick of gum again—I can visualize no substance more disgusting, no habit more repellent, no entity more antithetical to basic human dignity than chewing gum. Happy birthday Wrigley Field, but are you too beautiful of a ballpark? After all, attendance at games is more sensitive to beer prices—much more—than it is to the Cubs’ record. Wrigley Field, the dead-ball-era ballpark wedged into perhaps Chicago’s hippest north-side neighborhood, turns 100 this April. With its ivy-shrouded walls, manually operated scoreboard, and concrete-and-steel edifice, it survives as a monument to architectural beauty and athletic ineptitude. The Chicago Cubs, those loveable losers of the National League, have called the friendly confines of Wrigley home for the past 98 years, and not once in that time have they won the World
