GOP measure would promote
‘school choice’ with federal funding

Washington Post, by Lyndsey Layton

Republicans are positioning “school choice” — sending public dollars to charter schools, vouchers, virtual schools and other alternatives to traditional public schools — as a way to address income inequality in this election year and connect with low-income, minority voters. Sens. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), a former education secretary, and Tim Scott (S.C.), one of only two African Americans in the Senate, will propose far-reaching “choice” legislation on Tuesday that would take the $24 billion in federal money spent annually to help educate 11 million students in poverty or with disabilities and convert it into block grants to the states, among

Government funding of anything makes me uncomfortable. Look what it´s done for student loans and how colleges that accept government-backed loans are subject to the demands of the political class. It´s always a camel´s nose in the tent.

Federal funding for education. This is a terrible idea. We need to privatize education for all students and get the government out of the business of educating our children. I say this as one who substitutes in the public school systems. I have seen the problems and government oversight is the main problem.

Many charter schools are a farce. Either make public schools better with better teachers or get out of the propaganda business.

Oh by the way, while Washington is debating whether enrollment in Obamacare is terrible or just awful, the Washington Examiner brings to our attention a February 2014 cost report by eHealthInsurance that reveals the premiums for private health insurance policies (those outside of Obamacare) have risen by 39 to 56 percent for individual and family plans. And The Hill’s Elise Viebeck writes this morning that “Health industry officials say Obamacare-related premiums will double in some parts of the country, countering claims recently made by the administration.” So Obamacare has resulted in higher costs, limited plans, restricted doctor options, a reduction

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- Two objects spotted in the southern Indian Ocean may be debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Australian authorities said Thursday, fueling hopes of a breakthrough in an international search of unprecedented scale. The objects are indistinct but of "reasonable size," with the largest about 24 meters (79 feet) across, said John Young, general manager of emergency response for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. They appear to be "awash with water and bobbing up and down" in an area 2,500 kilometers (1,500 miles) southwest of Australia´s west coast, he said. "If that piece of the plane is that

WASHINGTON -- The crisis over Crimea is more than a dispute over whether the strategic Black Sea peninsula should be considered Russian or Ukrainian. At its root is a deeper issue: Russia´s simmering anger over its treatment by the West since the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union. Russia´s biggest grievance has been the absorption into the NATO alliance not only of former Soviet allies, such as Poland and Romania, but also three republics that were part of the Soviet Union: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The last straw was a European Union move to draw Ukraine closer to the West through

Apparently, no one at the Ferndale Public School District in Michigan took a civics course or bothered to read their own state constitution — and neither did the union representing teachers in the district. Michigan Capitol Confidential found an interesting, and totally unconstitutional, clause in the contract between the district and the Michigan Education Association local that requires the district to provide “special consideration” to “those of the non-Christian faith” in hiring decisions: The contract ran from 2011 to 2012 but was extended to 2017. In recent weeks, I´ve talked to several Washington politicos close to Bill and Hillary Clinton, and when I´ve asked if they will be joining Hillary´s presidential machine, should she run, I´ve received a variant of this (understandably) not-for-citation reply: If Mark Penn is involved, no f-ing way. Penn is famous—or infamous—for being the chief strategist for Hillary Clinton´s 2008 presidential campaign of inevitability that turned into a colossal failure. That effort was marked by hubris, lousy messaging, poor strategic planning, and legendary internal tensions—including back-biting, leaks, and fierce inside politics—that many within the politerati blamed, fairly or not, on Penn.

Chris Goodfellow doesn’t have much patience for the uncertainty concerning Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The instrument-rated Florida pilot found the theories and countertheories mooted on outlets like CNN “almost disturbing.” (I’ve appeared on CNN to discuss Flight 370, but I’ll try not to take Goodfellow’s remarks personally.) So he set about cutting through the clutter, using nothing more than the machete-like incisiveness of his own intellect. President Obama is a gift to Republicans. His policies, his partisanship, his allegiance to liberal interest groups, his indecisiveness — they all have served Republicans well. Without Obama’s self-destructive presidency, Republicans would probably be somber today. Instead they are bursting with optimism about the November midterm election. It didn’t have to be this way. And it wouldn’t be, had the president shown more foresight and less insistence on getting whatever he wanted, pretty much in the form he wanted. Congressional Democrats had a hand in this. But the policies were his. Obama was in charge. He’s responsible. For starters, the

The Malaysians changed more than the clock when they backtracked Monday from their original statement that the last voice contact from the airplane (“All right, good night”) was received at 1:30 a.m., putting it instead at 1:19 a.m. The need for an absolutely accurate timeline of the Boeing 777’s flight path has always been essential to investigators. As my wife looked at me in disbelief, I quickly added a correction. “Well, almost.” Beset by failures at home and abroad, the president cuts a lonely and sad figure these days.
