Jodi Arias Defense Cost
Taxpayers $2M and Counting

Associated Press, by Brian Skoloff

Original Article

Jodi Arias´ legal bills have topped $2 million, a tab being footed by Arizona taxpayers that will only continue to climb with a new penalty phase set for March, officials said Monday. Arias, 33, was convicted of murder in May, but the jury couldn´t reach a verdict on her sentence. Prosecutors are now pursuing a second penalty phase with a new jury in an effort to get the death penalty. Trial is set for March 17. The former waitress and aspiring photographer has been held in jail in Maricopa County awaiting her fate while her legal bills continue to mount.

Any normal smuck gets stuck paying his/her own lawyer bill and usually gets stuck with some incompetent lawyer. I don´t see why Arias is so special. She should have been put to death by the same manner she murdered the guy by.

Former U.S. Senator and President of the Heritage Foundation, Jim DeMint, joined WSJ Live host Mary Kissel on Tuesday where he was pressed for his thoughts on why insurgent tea party challengers are not faring well this year in primary challenges against incumbent Republicans. DeMint insisted that he could not opine on individual races because Heritage is not a political organization and added that he has never been “a part of the tea party.” He admitted, however, that he has “been to a lot of meetings.” Kissel pressed DeMint to explain why tea party candidate Matt Bevin is losing ground

California Rep. Darrell Issa adjourned a divisive House Oversight hearing Wednesday after IRS official Lois Lerner pleaded the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer his questions. “Seeking the truth is the obligation of this committee,” Issa said before announcing that he had no expectation that Lerner would answer his questions and adjourning the hearing. Lerner invoked the Fifth Amendment on each question Issa asked about the agency’s targeting of conservative groups. The hearing lasted approximately fifteen minutes before Issa released Lerner. Issa began the hearing by explaining that Lerner previously waived her Fifth Amendment rights in a May 2013 hearing and that “the

In the first test of the 2014 mid-term elections, voters in Texas stuck with their incumbent members of Congress, turning back almost every challenger in both parties, as Republicans shrugged off calls from within for major election upheaval in the U.S. House and Senate. The results in the Lone Star State were a setback for Tea Party groups that had hopes of recapturing their GOP primary energy of 2012 in Texas, when they unexpectedly launched Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to a U.S. Senate victory, as the GOP Establishment showed its strength with an easy Republican primary win by Sen. John Cornyn

In matters cultural, California has always been the United States’ petri dish. Whatever happened in California usually infiltrated the rest of the country. Today there is reason to hope that other trends collecting on our far-left coast (geographically speaking) might infect the nation, especially in matters of governance and fiscal responsibility. Jerry Brown, about to begin a run for his fourth term as governor, has shed the “Governor Moonbeam” moniker that he has worn like an itchy suit for nearly 40 years, compliments of famed Chicago columnist Mike Royko (RIP, 1997). Even Royko later regretted the nickname and tried to retract

First lady Michelle Obama’s poll ratings lag well behind the ratings earned by Laura Bush, according to a new Gallup survey. Obama’s positive rating among adults is only 66 percent, compared to Bush’s 73 percent favorable rating. Barbara Bush, wife of President George H.W. Bush, outscored both, at 77 percent, the poll of adults revealed. Michelle Obama is dragged down by a negative rating from 25 percent of Gallup’s respondents. But Michelle Obama still scores higher that Hillary Clinton, whose positive ratings were at 56 percent. Clinton’s negative ratings were 37 percent. The poll ratings are shaped by the first lady’s activities. Generally, the public

Ukraine´s underfunded and outdated military, with Cold War-era technology and salaries to match, would be an anemic deterrent if the Russian invasion of Crimea were to widen into a bigger confrontation, according to a 2012 Ukrainian Ministry of Defense report. Obsolete tanks and fighter planes, a miniscule navy and a dwindling army whose approximately 100,000 soldiers earn about half the nation’s average salary all bode poorly for the nation of 45 million what declared its independence from Russia in 1991. “It is absolutely not a combat ready force. A sordid account involving illicit sex in uniform will be aired this week in an austere courtroom at Fort Bragg, N.C., and the results could tip the scales in a high-stakes debate in Congress over the future of the military justice system. He is only the third Army general to face court-martial in more than a half-century. But after two years of investigation and preparation, the prosecution is in disarray. The Army’s lead

Emails obtained by Fox News continue to shed light on the ongoing dispute between congressional lawmakers and former IRS official Lois Lerner over her long-sought testimony on the IRS targeting scandal. The release of the emails follows a bizarre public back-and-forth on Sunday that started when committee Chairman Rep. Within minutes, Lerner lawyer William Taylor said he was still under the assumption his client would assert her constitutional right not to testify – a statement followed by

The crisis in Ukraine has brought out a fresh round of critics of President Obama´s foreign policy who see a pattern emerging: the president tries to assert his authority and direct events on the world stage with empty threats, which inevitably have no follow through. With each instance, U.S. power grows weaker as foreign powers view Mr. Obama as the president who cried wolf. The latest case: Mr. Obama´s public warning to Russia to stay out of Ukraine was followed by an invasion just days later. It´s just the latest failure, say critics who point to Syria as an example.

At Chipotle, guacamole costs extra - but it soon may not be available at all thanks to climate change. The Denver, Colorado-based chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants threatened to take the condiment off the menu because of the rising price of avocados. While the avocado crop is currently fine, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are predicting drier temperatures will lead to a 40 per cent drop in California´s avocado crop over the next 32 years. Most modern scientists agree that there is a direct correlation between the increase of droughts and global warming, according to Think Progress.

A shocking poll released Tuesday shows overwhelming majorities of people in Virginia, New York and New Jersey support a national gun registry.
