Closed doors for jury selection

Closed courtrooms. No laptops, phones or Wi-Fi. Bathrooms closed off by marshals. The corruption trial of former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin cranks up Monday with a federal judge imposing tough rules on spectators and reporters during jury selection. In an order issued last week, U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan imposed those restrictions because of concerns that courtroom rules "may not be respected" by some unnamed miscreants. Nagin´s pleas for federal help for his flooded city caught the nation´s attention in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Now out of office, he´s pleaded not guilty to federal charges of

In a contentious open-to-the-public hearing that lasted only few minutes, the House Ways and Means Committee voted this morning to immediately go into a closed session to discuss a letter proposed by the committee’s majority to refer former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner to the Justice Department for possible criminal prosecution. When Ranking Member Sander Levin (D.-Mich.), seeking to make a point of order, repeatedly interrupted Chairman Dave Camp’s (R.-Mich.) attempt to start a roll-call vote intended to take the committee into closed session, Camp told him: “Just chill out. What is the gentleman’s point of order?”

A government ethics watchdog agency has filed a complaint seeking disciplinary action against an IRS customer service worker in Kentucky accused of engaging in political activity at work by urging callers to vote for President Barack Obama. The Office of Special Counsel filed the complaint on Tuesday with the Merit Systems Protection Board, according to the OSC, after a probe found the tax advisory specialist violated a law — the Hatch Act — against such political activity by federal workers. The move comes as Republicans on Capitol Hill prepare for a vote later on Wednesday seeking a criminal prosecution against Lois

Dr. Salomon Melgen, an eye doctor, major Democratic donor, and friend of Sen. Bob Menendez (D., N.J.), collected $20 million dollars from Medicare in 2012, the Washington Times reports. Salomon Melgen’s practice charged the Medicare program for 37,075 injections of a macular degeneration drug to 645 different patients. The government paid him back at an average reimbursement of nearly $320 for each procedure, according to the records. The figures were part of a massive release of data by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which disclosed detailed information on physician reimbursements in response to several Freedom of Information Act

It’s only April 2014, but a minor boom for a Rick Perry presidential candidacy seems to be cropping up online, first in the Fiscal Times and then on Jennifer Rubin’s WaPo blog, despite the Texas governor’s misfire the first time around. He was the frontrunner in the 2012 campaign before that debate when he could not recall the names of all the federal agencies he wanted to eliminate completely (three at the time, but maybe he should consider doubling or tripling it this go round). A good deal of his forgetfulness, I am certain, was attributable to Perry’s then recent

While Russian President Vladimir Putin foments unrest in Ukraine as a potential guise to plunder more territory, President Obama unleashes Captain Obvious and Secretary Shuttle. Captain Obvious is White House press secretary Jay Carney, the former Moscow bureau chief for Time magazine who told reporters Monday, "If Russia moves into Eastern Ukraine, either overtly or covertly, this would be a very serious escalation." No kidding. Like the time Putin moved into Crimea over White House objections – overtly, covertly and permanently? Thrusting his lower lip into a serious-face pout, Carney solemnly revealed nothing we didn´t already know. "What´s clear is

More mothers have been staying home with their children since the recession ended, but a growing number of them say that’s primarily because they can’t find a job, according to a new study. Almost three in 10 mothers with children under 18 living with them are stay-at-home moms, an analysis of Census Bureau data by the Pew Research Center showed. That is a 3 percentage point jump from the depth of the recession in 2008. (Snip) After decades of decline, the share of mothers with children in the house has been growing since around 2000. Gohmert brought up an apparent sore spot, referencing the 2012 House vote finding Holder in contempt of Congress. "I realize that contempt is not a big deal to our attorney general, but it is important that we have proper oversight," Gohmert said. While many parts of the U.S. economy struggle to recover from the Great Recession of 2008-09, one domestic industry is experiencing a technology-driven expansion in which American innovations have led to countless new company startups, a surge in hiring and some of the highest-paying entry-level jobs for graduating college seniors. How are the nation´s universities responding so students might prepare for a promising career in this growing and intellectually challenging field? By largely ignoring it. Why? Because the industry is oil and gas. This fact may surprise the casual campus observer, since almost every U.S. college

The former Massachusetts senator will formally announce his bid for the seat held by Democrat Jeanne Shaheen at the Portsmouth Harborside Hotel on Thursday night. “I remember our house on Islington Street, strolling through Strawbery Banke with my grandfather, and catching a show at Prescott Park. Now, Portsmouth is going to be the start of the next chapter in my life,” he told supporters in an email.

When friends and family members gathered recently at the White House for a private celebration of Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday, one of the invited partygoers was a former paid FBI Mafia informant. LONDON - Peaches Geldof, the wild-child second daughter of concert organizer Bob Geldof who worked as a model, a television presenter and a fashion writer and filled the pages of British tabloids with her late-night antics, has died at age 25. There was no immediate word on the cause of her death at her home in Wrotham, Kent, southeast England. Her father said in a statement Monday: "Peaches has died. We are beyond pain." "She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us," he said. "Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact. There’s a big spike in Medicaid, just as everyone expected. There’s a less big but
