Ariz. inmates get bread,

Phoenix — Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says several inmates who defaced the American flag will be given only bread and water. Arpaio says 38 inmates are accused of desecrating a flag and will be put on the special diet as punishment. A U.S. flag is emblazoned in every jail cell in all six Maricopa County jails, Arpaio said. According to Arpaio, inmates have torn flags, written or stepped on them. Some have also thrown flags in the toilet or trash. The sheriff says they are destroying government property.

In a new study, researchers found an increased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) among women who have taken oral contraceptives. However, the findings do not mean women should stop using birth control, the researchers say. Utilizing membership data from Kaiser Permanente Southern California, researchers analyzed the health records of 305 women aged 14 to 48 who were diagnosed with MS or its precursor, clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), between 2008 and 2011. They looked at the women’s birth control use up to three years prior to the onset of MS symptoms. Overall, researchers found a 30 percent increased risk of developing

A man who essentially came back to life after his heart stopped for nearly 45 minutes is now telling the story of his astounding near-death experience. According to FOX 4’s sister station, FOX 8 in Cleveland, Brian Miller suffered a massive heart attack and seemed fine until the next day when he began experiencing Ventricular Fibrillation, which is a usually deadly fluttering pattern of the heart where blood is no longer being pumped through the body. Without treatment, the condition can kill a person in just a few minutes. After about 45 minutes of Miller being without a heart-rate, pulse,

As hundreds of tourists and art lovers enjoyed the Guggenheim´s evening of free admission last night, scores of activists briefly took control of the museum, blaring a bugle, dropping banners from the spiral balconies, and raining leaflets on visitors. The activists, affiliates of the Gulf Labor group, were calling attention to the construction of a new Guggenheim branch on the artificial Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. The emirate is pouring money into a massive project to bring western cultural institutions to the island, including the Louvre, and the controversial New York University branch.

After President Barack Obama bowed to critics in November and allowed people with canceled health insurance policies to keep their coverage for another year, the White House quickly hit the spin cycle. In a telephone briefing with reporters that same day, senior administration officials said their “enforcement discretion” allowed them to tweak the Affordable Care Act to ensure that it would be implemented with minimal disruption. Previous administrations had done the same thing with complicated new laws, they said, and the slow-motion rollout of the sprawling health care law was sure to encounter more problems

There’s a new exorcist in town. A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact. There’s a big spike in Medicaid, just as everyone expected. There’s a less big but

How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. This is a soothing interpretation, as it begins from the hypothesis that the contest between conservatives and the GOP elite is a family feud. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally

My first published column was in a local paper opposing the Equal Rights Amendment for the same reasons that Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative lawyer, campaigned on. As ambiguously written, the ERA, would eliminate the men-only draft requirement, repeal protective laws like sexual assault and eliminate the tendency for mothers to obtain custody over their children in divorce cases. Ironically, one of the arguments that helped sink the amendment from ratification was the fear that single-sex bathrooms would no longer be permitted. In addition, opponents of the amendment also warned that it would lead to abortion on demand and same-sex marriages.

More than a hundred Republican Party elders gathered this weekend in Texas to celebrate George H.W. Bush’s legacy. But many of the event’s participants had another, much simpler agenda: launching a Jeb Bush presidential campaign. The two-day festivities featured a widely covered speech by Jeb. And on the sidelines, former Bush retainers were frank about their hopes that the eldest son could save a party the family has led on and off since 1988. “We have a responsibility to make sure Jeb runs,” said longtime Bush adviser Andy Card after the speech. “If Jeb Bush does not run, shame on us.” Card added,
