Supreme Court blocks
contraceptives rule for religious groups

Los Angeles Times, by David G. Savage

Original Article

Posted By:duhem, 1/24/2014 6:39:50 PM

The Supreme Court on Friday shielded the Little Sisters of the Poor and other nonprofit religious groups from complying, for now, with the Obama administration’s rule that they provide free contraceptives in the health insurance they offer employees. The justices issued a one-paragraph order that keeps in place a temporary injunction that was handed down by Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Dec. 31. The Little Sisters of the Poor and other Catholic charities objected to the so-called “contraceptive mandate” -- a provision of the Affordable Care Act -- on religious grounds. Their lawyers said they feared “draconian fines” if they failed to comply

Comments:
This is a more a balanced and detailed article than the CNN piece posted previously. Two points to emphasize: the decision was unanimous and, as the first paragraph points out, is temporary.

Why did the Little Sisters have to go to the SC to fight this when the Muzlims were waived in the beginning ?

I have little faith in the court system to uphold the tradition of conscientious objection for religious reasons that has been a hallmark of our republic. After all they´re just Christians that don´t want to kill babies, its not like the hallowed anti-war protestors dodging the draft and their duty to fight for their country.

Stephen Hawking:
"There are no black holes"

Stephen Hawking has produced a "mind-bending" new theory that argues black holes do not actually exist - at least not in the way we currently perceive them. Instead, in his paper, Information Preservation and Weather Forecasting for Black Holes, Hawking proposes that black holes can exist without 'event horizons', the invisible cover believed to surround every black hole.During a previous lecture, 'Into the Black Hole', Hawkins described an event horizon as the boundary of a black hole, "where gravity is just strong enough to drag light back, and prevent it escaping".
“Falling through the event horizon, is a bit like going over Niagara Falls in a canoe", he said. "If you are above the falls, you can get away if you paddle fast enough, but once you are over the edge, you are lost. There's no way back.

The Politics of Reality

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following text is adapted from Secretary Bennett’s speech delivered at National Review Institute’s summit on the future of conservatism on January 27, 2013. Good evening. It was National Review’s eminence, Bill Buckley, who described conservatism as the politics of reality. Let’s look reality square in the eye. Let me tell you some things that I think are true. 1. First, two honest looks back and a word of encouragement.

For the last couple of days, I’ve been writing about American culture and American politics. The two are basically inseparable, I find. Anyway, for the first part of the series, go here; and for the second, go here. I will now wrap up. There is a defeatist strain among conservatives. Some say, “You know, we’ve done our best. We’ve tried our best in politics. Let’s just give up, and tend to private life, such as it is. Let’s look after our families, our places of worship, our friends.

As the 2012 election approached, conservative enthusiasm grew. Mitt Romney was drawing huge crowds while Barack Obama spoke in half-filled stadiums. All the passion lay on the right, while the left was discouraged with a promised messiah who proved merely a politician. And the prediction was that, in contrast to 2008, Republican turnout would dwarf the tuned-out and carry the day. Hence the shock November 6 eve. How could Romney lose, especially by such a wide electoral margin? Maybe he didn´t

Tehran — Iran has agreed to abandon its nuclear-weapons program in a historic diplomatic achievement certain to dominate tonight’s foreign-policy presidential debate, and dramatically reshape the electoral landscape. “This is an extraordinary breakthrough,” said Deputy Undersecretary of State Jonathan Ebert Jr., lead negotiator for the U.S. “It’s a tribute to the hard work of our diplomatic team and President Obama’s visionary leadership.” According to Ebert, the momentous deal was struck late Sunday night after President Obama called Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and personally apologized for a Madonna video the Iranian leader found offensive.

Having a president who perpetuates a falsehood to the American people about the cause of a terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that resulted in the deaths of four Americans. Having a president who uses $70,000 of taxpayers’ money to promote that falsehood on Pakistani television. A fact check of claims made by Mitt Romney during Wednesday’s domestic-policy debate shows numerous falsehoods, the magnitude of which could damage the electoral prospects of the Republican challenger. The three most egregious misrepresentations are as follows:“23 million Americans are out of work.” False. Barrett Blankenship of the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that Romney’s claim is unequivocally false.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has accused the panel´s top Democrat of prompting the Internal Revenue Service in 2012 to target a conservative organization applying for nonprofit status. Issa said records obtained last week from the IRS show communications from the office of ranking member Rep. The communications at one point involved Lois Lerner, the ex-IRS official who Issa´s panel is poised to hold in contempt of Congress on Thursday for refusing to provide testimony about her

How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. This is a soothing interpretation, as it begins from the hypothesis that the contest between conservatives and the GOP elite is a family feud. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally

A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact. There’s a big spike in Medicaid, just as everyone expected. There’s a less big but

By a vote of 23 to 14, a closed-door session of the House committee determined that Lerner’s role in the alleged singling out of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status for undue scrutiny was a criminal act. The vote was “just another attempt by Republicans to vilify Ms. Lerner for political gain,” according to the ex-IRS official’s attorney, William Taylor.
