A Caltrans engineer and an outside expert working on the Bay Bridge eastern span accused agency officials of discounting warnings about cracked welds on the bridge, and telling them not to put their concerns in writing to keep them from becoming public, according to a report commissioned for a state Senate committee. Bridgewater — Bridgewater´s retired chief will now collect a salary as a county undersheriff, in addition to his chief´s pension, according to a report on MyCentralJersey.com. Bridgewater´s former police chief, Richard Borden, will take charge of the Somerset County Sheriff´s Office administration division on Monday, just six months after leaving the Bridgewater force, the report said. He´ll get a nearly $90,000 salary (replacing an undersheriff who had been earning more than $100,000) and will collect a pension of $105,000, the report said. Borden was hired by Somerset County Sheriff Frank Provenzano, with whom Borden worked in Bridgewater from 1982 until 2001.
