Presidential commission offers
ways to shorten voting lines

A nonpartisan panel of election and management experts is recommending that states embrace technology, more flexibility in the voting process and better resources for voters in order to improve the speed and ease of casting a ballot in the U.S. The Presidential Commission on Election Administration, an idea presented by President Obama during his 2013 State of the Union speech, met with theMr. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday to present the findings of a six-month study that involved conversations with stakeholders like election administrators, activists, voters and academics. They concluded that the problems that led to record-long lines

Democrats have already solved the long voting line problem. They post a dozen Black Panther Members in front of the door.

At our polling place, those who took paper ballots got right through. Those in line were waiting for the electronic ballot machine. The next election, we all used paper ballots and there was no line. Are these the ballot machines run by SEIU and owned by George Soros?

Maybe if only legitimate voters showed up to the polls with their id in hand, informed ahead of time on all the issues and candidates on the ballot, things might move at a quicker clip. No, the commission is just looking for easier ways to stuff the proverbial ballot box.

I live in a Democratic precinct, I had to wait a half hour to vote for a poorly attended city election. The clerk who was hunting for names so I could sign in was not very familiar with the alphabet, then I had to go to the next clerk who checked my picture ID, she was fairly quick. I am worried what the national elections this fall will be like.

One of the members of this "non-partisan" commission was Bob Bauer, Anita Dunn´s husband and Obama´s lawyer. Non partisan indeed.

You can bet your boots that Obama would be out golfing instead of attending this meeting if he thought that this committee´s report would not generate more liberal Democrat voters.

House kills Obama budget 2-413

The House on Wednesday handily rejected a GOP budget alternative based on President Obama´s 2015 spending blueprint. It was defeated 2-413, following a pattern seen in recent years in House votes to overwhelmingly reject Obama´s budget proposals. Today´s vote is just slightly better than the unanimous vote against Obama´s budget in 2012. The two "yes" votes came from Reps. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) and Jim Moran (D-Va.), who is retiring. Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) offered a budget alternative based on Obama´s budget plan as a substitute amendment to the House GOP budget. Mulvaney made this move as a way to force

A House committee voted Wednesday to formally ask the Justice Department to consider criminal prosecution against ex-IRS official Lois Lerner, the figure at the center of the political targeting scandal. The House Ways and Means Committee voted 23-14 to send the criminal referral. The vote marked an escalation in Republicans´ push to confront Lerner over her role in the agency´s controversial practice of singling out conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status for extra scrutiny. On another front, a separate committee will vote Thursday on whether to hold her in contempt of Congress for twice refusing to testify on the scandal.

The Medicare program is the source of a small fortune for many U.S. doctors, according to a trove of government records that reveal unprecedented details about physician billing practices nationwide. The government insurance program for older people paid nearly 4,000 physicians in excess of $1 million each in 2012, according to the new data. Those figures do not include what the doctors billed private insurance firms. The release of the information gives the public access for the first time to the billing practices of individual doctors nationwide. Consumer groups and news outlets have pressured Medicare to release the data for

In a contentious open-to-the-public hearing that lasted only few minutes, the House Ways and Means Committee voted this morning to immediately go into a closed session to discuss a letter proposed by the committee’s majority to refer former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner to the Justice Department for possible criminal prosecution. When Ranking Member Sander Levin (D.-Mich.), seeking to make a point of order, repeatedly interrupted Chairman Dave Camp’s (R.-Mich.) attempt to start a roll-call vote intended to take the committee into closed session, Camp told him: “Just chill out. What is the gentleman’s point of order?”

That is a 3 percentage point jump from the depth of the recession in 2008. (Snip) After decades of decline, the share of mothers with children in the house has been growing since around 2000. The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says investigators have uncovered evidence that a former Internal Revenue Service official may have committed crimes as part of the agency´s tea party controversy. Rep. Dave Camp set a committee vote for Wednesday on whether to refer Lois Lerner, who used to head the agency´s tax-exempt division, to the Justice Department "for possible criminal prosecution." Camp, R-Mich., did not specify which laws Lerner may have broken. Lerner´s lawyer, William W. Taylor III, has said she broke no laws. On Monday, Taylor emailed this response to Camp´s announcement: "One word: Ridiculous." Camp´s committee has been investigating

A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact. There’s a big spike in Medicaid, just as everyone expected. There’s a less big but

Ms. Lerner faces a vote in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Thursday that could begin the process of accusing her of contempt of Congress. How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. This is a soothing interpretation, as it begins from the hypothesis that the contest between conservatives and the GOP elite is a family feud. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally

My first published column was in a local paper opposing the Equal Rights Amendment for the same reasons that Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative lawyer, campaigned on. As ambiguously written, the ERA, would eliminate the men-only draft requirement, repeal protective laws like sexual assault and eliminate the tendency for mothers to obtain custody over their children in divorce cases. Ironically, one of the arguments that helped sink the amendment from ratification was the fear that single-sex bathrooms would no longer be permitted. In addition, opponents of the amendment also warned that it would lead to abortion on demand and same-sex marriages.
