Record-busting big freeze! Janus dumps
a FOOT of snow on the Northeast breaking
snow-fall records in New York and bringing
morning wind chills as low as minus forty

Daily Mail [UK], by Staff

Much of the East Coast is bracing itself for a return to unseasonably cold weather on Wednesday as temperatures reminiscent of the polar vortex return with a vengeance following Tuesday’s heavy snow storm. Winter storm Janus dumped a foot and a half of snow in many areas, grounding thousands of flights and closing government offices in the nation´s capital. The storm stretched 1,000 miles between Kentucky and Massachusetts but hit especially hard along the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor between Philadelphia and Boston, which created perilous rides home for millions of motorists on Tuesday evening.

Comments:
"Janus"? Comedy and tragedy in the same package?

Apparently, the Weather Channel is naming these storms. I can well imagine the meetings where winter storm names are decided. Must be trying to prove how "well-educated" they are. It´s not working.

Okay, if we have to endure this nonsense, I want to see Jim Cantore reporting on blizzard conditions in New York City, hanging on to a lamp post, up to his freezing cojones in snow, wearing Arctic Weather Channel togs, nicely frosted eyebrows and snot icicles impeding his report. There´s your comedy and tragedy.

Here in my little part of Kentucky we got an inch of snow, but it´s COLD out there!!

I wish the Weather Channel would just quit with the storm names already. They are silly. Also, I remember weather like this in my youth, and we just kept on with daily activities. The weathermen simply reported the weather without any of the doom and gloom that pervades weather reports now.

Maybe it was a record breaking cold for a single day but back in the 50´s, below zero and way below zero was routine.

I think the Weather Channel is trying to make the weather sexy, because marketing people have said "sex sells". I can understand "hot and steamy" as a "sexy" narrative on the weather, but "cold and frigid" - well I´ll leave that to your imagination.

In order to make weather your enemy, it is necessary to name it. Then you´ll be glad to part with your money and your way of life to help defeat it. Soon you´ll be telling your friends and neighbors that you actually like your CFL bulbs.

The Weather Channel is trying to create drama from normal events. They are global warming/cooling fanatics. Names for winter storms? No one is paying any attention to that stupidity. I hate that channel.

I share everyone´s disdain for the Weather Channel.

There is another weather forecasting service which is going to have a cable channel later this year: Accuweather. I´m looking forward to it. Their forecasts are less sensational and, IMHO, more accurate.

Seven million voters turned out across Afghanistan on Saturday to cast their ballots in the country´s historic presidential election. The Taliban had threatened to target voters and polling places, but there were few instances of violence. Instead, those wanting to cast ballots joined long lines and expressed pride for security forces guarding the election and a willingness to stand up for their country. Women also turned out in large numbers for the vote to replace President Hamid Karzai, who is barred constitutionally from seeking a third term. The election comes as foreign troops begin their withdrawal from the country after

Three million lower-income Americans have enrolled in the Medicaid program for the poor so far during the rollout of U.S. President Barack Obama´s healthcare reform law, the administration announced on Friday. [Snip] A percentage of those new enrollees includes prisoners in cash-strapped states that have decided to rely on Obamacare for their inmates’ health insurance needs. The prisoners are getting brought into the fold the same way that a number Medicaid enrolees are, as 26 states are in the process of trying to extend medical coverage to single and childless adults who fall into certain categories.

Earthquakes rattled residents in Oklahoma on Saturday, the latest in a series that have put the state on track for record quake activity this year, which some seismologists say may be tied to oil and gas exploration. One earthquake recorded at 3.8 magnitude by the U.S. Geological Survey rocked houses in several communities around central Oklahoma at 7:42 a.m. local time. Another about two hours earlier in the same part of the state, north of Oklahoma City, was recorded at 2.9 magnitude, USGS said.

For a president long criticised for seeing things only in black and white, the exhibition of George W Bush´s art at his presidential library in Dallas comes as something of a revelation. Delicate brushwork has replaced his famed swagger. He presents himself as a wholly different kind of Texas oilman. With each new brushstroke he seems also to be softening his public image. An angry crowd attacked an Ebola treatment centre in Guinea on Friday, accusing its staff of bringing the deadly disease to the town, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said, as Mali identified its first suspected cases. More than 90 people have already died in Guinea and Liberia in what the medical charity has warned could turn into an unprecedented epidemic in an impoverished region with poor health services. The outbreak in Guinea is the first time the disease, epidemics of which occur regularly in Central Africa, has appeared in the country. Infected patients initially went undiagnosed for several weeks before tests confirmed Ebola.
