A teen was shot and killed Thursday night in Oklahoma after shooting several people, including two ATF agents, police said. All the victims shot by the 19-year-old are expected to survive, police said. The teen, identified as Henry Jackson, was killed at 9:30 p.m. Thursday after going on a two-day crime spree, said Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt of the Ardmore Police Department. Authorities say the incident started on Wednesday night when a 19-year-woman called 911 and said she had been shot in the arm. About four blocks away from that shooting, another man was shot in the hip Thursday afternoon. Officers began to gather

A "teen"? 19-year-old man is not a teen. Unless CNN is trayvonning the story. Sheesh.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration is tightening the reins on cash handling to eliminate an embarrassing lack of oversight that allegedly allowed a low-level clerk in the Chicago Department of Transportation to embezzle nearly $750,000 in permit fees over a six-year period. In a memo to department heads, City Comptroller Dan Widawsky argued that “recent events have highlighted the risks associated with cash management” and the importance of “robust controls to manage” those risks. “We are the custodians of our city’s resources and you and your finance staff are critical to ensuring that such resources are safeguarded,” Widawsky wrote. “Each department head is responsibl

A diplomatic standoff between China and the Philippines that flared up two years ago in a dispute over fishing rights at a tiny shoal in the South China Sea is coming to a head after Manila decided to ignore Chinese threats and sue Beijing in an international tribunal. The legal case marks the first time that an arbitration panel will examine China´s contentious, and oft-disputed, claims to most of the South China Sea, one of the world´s busiest byways for shipping and a potentially rich source of oil and natural gas. The suit itself, a gargantuan, 4,000 page "memorial" filed before the

WASHINGTON – Lawmakers with strong ties to the Tea Party movement have gained a toehold in the U.S. Senate but it appears they might have difficulty expanding their numbers this year. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) are among those associated with the conservative, grassroots drive that has proved influential within Republican Party politics in a relatively short period of time. But a review of upcoming Senate contests reveals that more establishmentarian Senate candidates maintain an edge – at least to this point – heading into the primary season. New York - President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama reported an adjusted gross income of $481,098 for 2013 -- about 21% less than the year before. The bulk of their income came from the president´s salary, but the Obamas also reported roughly $100,000 in business income from Random House and literary management company Dystel & Goderich. The White House released the couple´s 2013 federal tax return on Friday. Their federal tax bill for 2013 came to $98,169, according to their return. That´s an effective federal tax rate of 20.4% on the First Family´s AGI. But because they already paid $117,277 in federal taxes,

The conservator, Michael Augustine, filed papers Tuesday noting that Rooney´s wife, Jan Chamberlin, and her son Chris Aber had attempted to move his body against the late actor´s wishes. VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis said Friday he took personal responsibility for the "evil" of priests who raped and molested children, asking forgiveness from victims and saying the church must be even bolder in its efforts to protect the young. It was the first time a pope has taken personal responsibility for the sex crimes of his priests and begged forgiveness. Francis made the off-the-cuff remarks after coming under criticism from victims´ advocacy groups for a perceived lack of attention to the sexual abuse scandal and ongoing demands that he sanction bishops who covered up for pedophiles. Nearly a year into the IRS scandal, we still don´t know exactly what happened—though we are finally getting an inkling. That´s thanks to the letter House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp sent this week to the Justice Department recommending a criminal probe of Lois Lerner. The average citizen might be dizzied by the torrent of confusing terms—BOLO lists, Tigta, 501(c)(4)—and the array of accusations that have made up this IRS investigation. Mr. Camp´s letter takes a step back to remind us why this matters, even as it provides compelling new information that goes to motive and method—and clarifies some of

The Senate made a historic change to its rules to limit the power of the minority five months ago. But to some senators, it might as well have happened yesterday. The raw feelings still lingering over Democrats’ unilateral change to the Senate’s filibuster rules were on public display on Thursday, when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) bitterly feuded over each others’ leadership. Reid accused the GOP of standing for little other than seeking to “stand around here and do nothing,” while McConnell said Reid had a “behavior problem” for the way he

Many Americans have been watching with great consternation the ongoing struggle between the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Marshals against Cliven Bundy and his family. There are no signs of either side relinquishing their position. Many onlookers have been informed that this dispute is over protecting the desert tortoise. But it is nothing of the sort. In fact, the reality of the dispute goes far underneath what is being talked about. The more appropriate source of the dispute is ground water as well as surface water -- this is a war over water. The son of the Nevada rancher locked in an increasingly tense land dispute with the federal government, says their cowboys managed to break a blockade and retrieve around 30 head of cattle. Federal agents swooped on Tuesday after Cliven Bundy, dubbed the last remaining rancher in southern Nevada, refused to remove his herd of 900 cows from land he claims has been in his family since 1870. The heavily-armed federal agents, equipped with eight helicopters and backed-up by snipers, surrounded the Bundy ranch after the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) attained a federal court order to confiscate the family´s herd. Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. Legislatures are in a far better position than judges to assess the

Solar power has won the global argument. Photovoltaic energy is already so cheap that it competes with oil, diesel and liquefied natural gas in much of Asia without subsidies. Roughly 29pc of electricity capacity added in America last year came from solar, rising to 100pc even in Massachusetts and Vermont.[Snip] The technology is improving so fast--helped by the US military--that it has achieved a virtous circle.
