Drinking Linked to Faster
Mental Decline in Men

NEW YORK -- Middle-aged men risk a faster mental decline as they age if they´ve been drinking heavily for years, new research suggests. The study of about 5,000 British civil servants found that over a decade, the added decline was the equivalent of about two extra years of aging for a combined measure of mental abilities like reasoning, and about six years for memory. The heavy drinkers´ abilities were compared to those of men who drank moderately or abstained. It´s no surprise that heavy alcohol consumption can affect the brain, but the study focuses on an age range that has received much

You don´t suppose any of those 5,000 might have lied about their consumption and that they just degenerated naturally, do you? Nooooo...they wouldn´t do that. Having said that, I highly recommend Buffalo Trace, what with a 3-day weekend coming up.

I lived in England for a while, and I can confirm the weather does tend to lead one to more indoor activities, such as competitive drinking.

I announced this past week that I will be retiring after having the honor of serving my Los Angeles constituents in Congress for 40 years. Immediately, speculation began that I am leaving because I am frustrated with a broken institution. But the exact opposite is true: I am leaving Congress with my conviction intact that the legislative branch can be a powerful force for good. Of course there are aspects of the current Congress that I abhor. This past week, every Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee, where I have served most of my career, voted to limitthe Environmental Protection

New London, population 27,000, a rundown onetime whaling port on the Atlantic coast that never recovered after the whaling industry died at the end of the 19th century, is a desolate-looking city. Former first lady Laura Bush tells C-SPAN´s “First Ladies” program than when a woman finally gets elected president, the “first gentleman” should be critiqued just like women are, including their choice of ties. In one part of a longer interview, she said that the media and public pays too much attention to first ladies and their hair and clothes. Talking about the possibility of a woman president, she said, “Maybe we should be that way about the first gentleman also and really critique the way they look all the time, their choice of tie, or their hair style or whatever,

Eric Holder picked the perfect time for a change-up. After all these years, he finally found a criminal he didn’t want to hug. Like everyone else, I’m almost as shocked as I am ecstatic. When it comes to portraits, a gauzy look can be a welcome thing for people of a certain age. But politics takes place in an unforgiving spotlight, as Texas Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Wendy Davis discovered when the Dallas Morning News exposed discrepancies in her oft-told tale of bootstrapping her way from single motherhood in a Fort Worth trailer park to graduating from Harvard Law School. That narrative has been central to Davis’ appeal as she seeks to translate the national attention from her marathon filibuster in defense of abortion rights last year into votes for her underdog candidacy this year.

The foundation, which annually tabulates the cost of programs presidents propose in their speeches, set this year´s annualized price at $39.995 billion. The bulk would pay for the immigration and amnesty, followed by $12.8 billion to restore unemployment insurance and $3.5 billion to fund a pre-K request. When totalled, the president’s wish list

Obama won’t give it up. If you also suffered through the State of the Union address, you heard him praise Obamacare, claim he would slash bureaucracy, and of course, fight for income equality. Obama pandered to the ladies, his tone becoming more passionate with every overly emotional word: Today, women make up about half our workforce. But they still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. That is wrong, and in 2014, it’s an embarrassment. A woman deserves equal pay for equal work. You have probably heard that statistic—77 cents on the dollar. Speech after speech from the left side of town

Hundreds of career Justice Department lawyers have broken into open revolt against Attorney General Holder over his support of legislation that would drastically cut back on mandatory minimum sentences for drug pushers. The legislation Holder supports, known as the Durbin-Lee bill, would overturn the current mandatory minimum sentences not only for marijuana violations but for all drug offenses, including major and repeat trafficking in heroin, meth, PCP and other extremely dangerous, and often lethal, drugs. This was too much for hundreds of federal prosecutors. Today, Chuck Grassley, the Ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, read aloud from a letter the

Moody´s rating agency has lowered the outlook for health insurers from stable to negative, blaming ObamaCare. Few Americans will shed tears for insurance companies. But the Moody´s announcement is a warning sign to taxpayers. They´ll be getting clobbered. Section 1342 of the Affordable Care Act forces taxpayers to make insurers whole for most of the losses incurred selling ObamaCare exchange plans through 2016. The bailout is designed to conceal the failure of the president´s signature health law until he is out of office. No one in the Obama administration talked up the advantages of bailing out insurers.
