Grandmother ´left to die´
after being refused funding

A grandmother has been ‘left to die’ by the NHS after being refused life-saving chemotherapy--because her cancer is not ‘exceptional’ enough. After waiting eight months for the treatment using ‘anti-cancer’ drug Ofatumumab, Mary Stanton, 69, was told she was not eligible for it and there was nothing more doctors could do for her. [Snip] She was given the devastating news by her oncology consultant, Dr Richard Murrin, at Birmingham’s City Hospital, who was also baffled by the decision and vowed to appeal it. Mrs Stanton who was already ‘distraught’ with the news, was then handed a ‘My Life’ pamphlet by

So not mentioned in the article is whether the drug would help her (it says in there "might" which is vague enough to suggest that the answer is "probably not") or if it does/would, how long before the disease progresses and it is no longer treatable. Also important is what other factors are involved in her disease and overall health.

While one sympathizes with her situation, those aspects have a significant bearing on what treatments, how much, etc. when you have limited resources and limited outcome expectations. Or, our Obamacare dollars (or NHS pounds) could be spent on anything and everything no matter the cost or benefit, just because it "might" help.

How would any of you continue? Many people want anything and everything if it "might" help granny, as long as they aren´t paying for it, and it might keep granny around another few days or weeks (in whatever condition); others are somewhat more rational. Reality folks...

The thing that burns me up is when you read the comments and people blame the hospitals and doctors for making too much money. There is no connection in their mind that it is a faceless government bureaucrat who is choosing not to pay for this woman´s care. I can´t begin to understand the way these people´s mind´s work.

This lady has more options than she realizes. She can sell her house to raise the money for her treatment, then go on the dole like all those people on Benefits Street. /s

It isn´t up to bureaucrats to say maybe the treatment won´t work. If it is a valid treatment that has helped others in like circumstances, in clinical trials, this lady should get the treatment. This bureaucratic accounting of the worth of people´s lives is what´s in store under Obamacare.

Those death panels are really nice, aren´t they.

But when Sarah Palin pointed it out, the media swarmed on the "lie". It was, and is, the ugly TRUTH of turning your health care over to an outside entity.

Last year, you could have an insurance policy that you selected that would cover it, but today - you no longer can select the terms of your health insurance - it is decided by the government and their death panels.

The UK is a crystal ball, looking in on our future.

My ex-wife was diagnosed with an "untreatable," terminal cancer in 1998. By pursuing agressive, cutting edge treatments she lived another 15 years.

Odds and statistic do not relate to an individual person´s response to treatment. Statistic are compiled after the outcome is known, and you never know what that will be until you try the treatments.

Obama is convinced that requiring preventative to be covered at no cost to the policyholder. His misconception is that money the insurance policy spends on this care will reduce healthcare costs in the future. This is a pipe dream. Such preventative care will help some small minority of patients, but most will never have the maladies that preventative care is supposed to prevent.

In the coming years we will spend billions upon billions of dollars preventing illnesses and conditions the vast majority would have never contracted. This will result in rationing care to the sickest.

Of course the president and congress will still have the very best care of all types for their lifetimes.

As I´ve posted here before, my mother was told she had digestive problems for months and months, maybe close to two years. (I haven´t had the nerve to read her letters over that period to nail it down; Dad never could talk about it.) Finally, some bureaucrat at the local NHS trust deigned to grant her a scan of some sort because, I think, she had lost an alarming amount of weight. Scans are too expensive to use on just any whiny old woman, you see. The scan showed terminal liver cancer. She died three weeks later. I don´t know what preceded the liver cancer, perhaps metastasized colon cancer.

The British have long worshiped the NHS because there really was a need for medical care in the immediate post World War II period--and the Labour government started the NHS. It WAS good in the beginning but it simply couldn´t be sustained--as those of us who look ahead to the future of Obamacare know all too well.

#14, I´m a cancer survivor too, going on 40 years. Had I remained in the UK I would not have had access to the equipment and immediate treatment that save my life, not some 4-month wait. And I wouldn´t be here to bombard Ldotters with articles like this, warning of the probable outcomes we should expect as time goes on.

Btw, even the EU thinks Ofatumumab is an acceptable treatment. The wrist-slapping over Mrs. Stanton and other´s remarks about the medical profession making high salaries (regional NHS Trust directors make well into the six figures) is no worse than those of us in the US who point to elected officials having access to much better health care than the people who put them in office. That resentment will extend to doctors before too long.

The headline should read, "British Death Panel Kills Elderly Woman."

Wether or not the drug may or may not work for her is not the point #1. The point is the decision is between her and her doctor with no government involvement. But then, population control has always been one of the pillars of your progressive movement hasn´t it?

A massive pile up during a whiteout storm in Indiana on Thursday afternoon killed three people and injured more than 20 others. Chaotic scenes of jackknifed trailers and the mangled wreckage of cars packed across three lanes of the highway could be seen after visibility dropped to nearly zero at about 3.30pm. The figure for stomach cancer--at 45 percent--is even worse. And Britons with prostate cancer are a fifth less likely to survive than Europeans if they are 85 and over. Just 43 percent live for five

To call Twitter a wild west is an understatement – it’s regressed far beyond that. We’re back to tribes and mob rule – with added speed and bloodlust. The inhabitants are confused and angry and move in swarms. You never know when they’ll suddenly swerve in unison and come at you. But how to deal with this random, terrifying phenomenon? Some hope we can get rid of it by civilising Twitter: introduce a basic justice system, swap the tribes for a sort of centralised government, perhaps move everyone on from hunter-gathering to nomadic farming. This might take a while.
