Politics Versus Education
Townhall, by Thomas Sowell

Original Article

Anyone who has still not yet understood the utter cynicism of the Obama administration in general, and Attorney General Eric Holder in particular, should look at the Justice Department´s latest interventions in education. If there is one thing that people all across the ideological spectrum should be able to agree on, it is that better education is desperately needed by black youngsters, especially in the ghettoes. For most, it is their one chance for a better life. Among the few bright spots in a generally dismal picture of the education of black students are those successful charter schools or voucher

I´m white in a predominantly white, middle-class community. I sent my son to the school system I attended. What a difference. My education, grade promotion, relied on my performance. If I couldn´t read, I was not promoted. My son´s promotion relied on a date that he WOULD be promoted even if he could not read. Because it was all about his self-esteem. Government schools are garbage for all colors of skin.

0bama has done more to deprive the black students of a good education than anyone in history. When he came into office, the DC blacks had a voucher program which was a huge success, but 0bama was pressured by the unions, and he did away with the vouchers, forcing blacks back into the dismal public education system. The biggest problem for black kids is the fact that the welfare system allows single mothers to have baby after baby, and there is no home life.

When President Barack Obama arrived in Houston about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, former President George H. W. Bush was there to greet him. "When the president comes to your hometown, you show up to meet him," said Bush, who chatted with Obama and the first lady for about five minutes at the foot of the steps next to Air Force One at Bush Intercontinental Airport. Obama greeted about 50 well-wishers behind a barricade and chatted and shook hands for about 10 minutes before leaving for a meeting with about 30 members of the Democratic National Committee at the Museum District

As new details emerged about his four-year stint in the 1980s as a confidential informer for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Rev. Al Sharpton thought enough of the attention to hold a news conference to address what became front-page fodder for New York tabloids for two days this week. But to use Sharpton-esque language, the revelation was nothing but an elevation. At the annual convention of the organization he founded in 1991, the National Action Network, there was no hint of any discord or doubt. The United States attorney general, Eric H. PORTLAND -- She´s the talk of her school and the entire city. After a speech from Hillary Clinton, a 6-year-old Portland girl asked a question that had everyone in Keller Auditorium on the edge of their seats. The moderator read from a card during a question-and-answer period. The final question: "This is from Zola Demarco, she is 6 years old and she addresses this to H.R. Clinton and she says, ´In 2016, would you prefer to be called Madame President or Mrs. President?´" Watching the footage on an iPad in her kindergarten class Wednesday morning, Zola got a first look

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sent tax documents on a targeted conservative group to Democratic staff on the House Oversight Committee, newly released emails show, despite previous denials by ranking Oversight Democrat Elijah Cummings (D., Md.) that such contact had occurred. Emails released by the GOP-led Oversight Committee show Democratic staff requested information from the IRS’ tax-exempt division on True The Vote, a conservative group that monitors polling places for voter fraud. Republicans and conservative activists say the IRS tax-exempt division, led by former official Lois Lerner, targeted dozens of conservative groups because of their politics while ignoring similar progressive

Why do you perpetrate a falsehood based on 3% leasehold ownership? The public demands answers. You are going to have to account for your false reporting. Did you coordinate with the

The Treasury Department has raised $2.38 billion after selling a large chunk of its stock in Ally Financial Inc. as part of the government´s ongoing effort to recoup the billions of dollars spent bailing out companies during the 2008 financial crisis. Treasury said Wednesday that it got $25 each for the 95 million shares it sold in an initial public offering. The pricing of the IPO came at the low end of the forecast range of $25 to $28 per share. The sale brought the amount it has recouped from the bailout of Ally to $17.7 billion, slightly more than the

The House on Wednesday handily rejected a GOP budget alternative based on President Obama´s 2015 spending blueprint. It was defeated 2-413, following a pattern seen in recent years in House votes to overwhelmingly reject Obama´s budget proposals. Today´s vote is just slightly better than the unanimous vote against Obama´s budget in 2012. The two "yes" votes came from Reps. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) and Jim Moran (D-Va.), who is retiring. Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) offered a budget alternative based on Obama´s budget plan as a substitute amendment to the House GOP budget. Mulvaney made this move as a way to force

A House committee voted Wednesday to formally ask the Justice Department to consider criminal prosecution against ex-IRS official Lois Lerner, the figure at the center of the political targeting scandal. The House Ways and Means Committee voted 23-14 to send the criminal referral. The vote marked an escalation in Republicans´ push to confront Lerner over her role in the agency´s controversial practice of singling out conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status for extra scrutiny. On another front, a separate committee will vote Thursday on whether to hold her in contempt of Congress for twice refusing to testify on the scandal.

A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact. There’s a big spike in Medicaid, just as everyone expected. There’s a less big but

How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. This is a soothing interpretation, as it begins from the hypothesis that the contest between conservatives and the GOP elite is a family feud. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally

My first published column was in a local paper opposing the Equal Rights Amendment for the same reasons that Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative lawyer, campaigned on. As ambiguously written, the ERA, would eliminate the men-only draft requirement, repeal protective laws like sexual assault and eliminate the tendency for mothers to obtain custody over their children in divorce cases. Ironically, one of the arguments that helped sink the amendment from ratification was the fear that single-sex bathrooms would no longer be permitted. In addition, opponents of the amendment also warned that it would lead to abortion on demand and same-sex marriages.

More than a hundred Republican Party elders gathered this weekend in Texas to celebrate George H.W. Bush’s legacy. But many of the event’s participants had another, much simpler agenda: launching a Jeb Bush presidential campaign. The two-day festivities featured a widely covered speech by Jeb. And on the sidelines, former Bush retainers were frank about their hopes that the eldest son could save a party the family has led on and off since 1988. “We have a responsibility to make sure Jeb runs,” said longtime Bush adviser Andy Card after the speech. “If Jeb Bush does not run, shame on us.” Card added,
