The Five Worst Things About Ecuador
Washington Free Beacon, by Daniel Wiser

Original Article

Posted By:PageTurner, 1/13/2014 4:31:56 PM

Observers wondering who would assume the mantle of Hugo Chavez as Latin America’s fiery, anti-American strong man did not have to wait long. That man is Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa. Correa won a second term last February and promised to continue his “citizens’ revolution.” However, his record looks different beyond the rhetoric. More than half of Ecuador’s 15 million people still live in poverty. Crime rates remain high. And journalists, members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and indigenous inhabitants are routinely fined and arrested. As the world awaits the birth of true democracy and freedom in Ecuador, the Washington Free Beacon compiled the five

Latin America is hopeless.
Why do Latinos think that their hopelessness will benefit America?

I have to disagree with the article. I´ve lived in Ecuador for two years and would rather have Correa as a president than 0bama. Under Correa the middle class has drastically increased. Ecuadorian friends of mine who moved back after 40 years in the States say the increase is dramatic. He instituted a law which mandates education for children. He forgave El Universal, nobody had to pay a fine and no one went to jail. I read the paper almost every day (El Comercio) and find it openly critacal of Correa. I haven´t heard the story about the vampire bats, sounds like hype to me. Almost all of the Ecuadorians say that a big change happened when he was elected. Prior to him the Presidents were all thieves. 2 of them, Mahaud and Noboa live in the US on money stolen from the Ecuadorian people. Latin American democracies will never be the same as what we are used to in the USA. Different strokes for different folks.

One good thing about Ecuador is that it is over 500 miles away from the Galapagos Islands. Otherwise large 500 year-old tortoises, blue-footed boobies, turtles and iguanas would no longer be endangered - they´d be extinct.

Correa is bonkers and is stealing the state blind as well as destroying its future. The illegal flow from that country is massive and growing. Dissidents (I know one) are beaten up by Cuba-style turbas. Let´s not even get into the documented evidence that FARC drug money and Ecuadorean political money form one big Latin tongue bath. Correa is a rabid, lunatic anti-American and stinks to high heaven. I´d still nominate Cretina Fernandez as the Ultimate Successor to Chavez, but Correa comes close. Just watch Oliver Stone´s documentary South of the Border to get a whiff of how sleazy this dirtbag is.

The capture of the founder of opposition political Voluntad Popular (People´s Will, VP) party, Leopoldo López, on the grounds of his alleged liability for the violent events occurred in Caracas on Wednesday has been ordered. On Wednesday evening, Caracas 16th Control Judge Ralenys Tovar Guillén admitted the petition made by the Attorney General Office to detain the ex Chacao mayor and ordered the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (Sebin) to apprehend him and enter his residence for the purposes of conducting a search, police sources reported. The anti-government protests started on Monday, and even then Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said he had had it. "I´ve had enough," said angry Maduro, who has held a wobbly grip on power since he replaced late-President Hugo Chavez last year. "You can accuse me of what you want, I am obliged to defend democracy and the peace of the people." Two days later and the protests have turned violent. When the demonstrations started, there were simply a few hundred protesters — mostly students — in cities around the country. Those students called for others to join them today as the country celebrates ´Youth

Remember when Stephanie Seymour raised more than a few eyebrows and set off one or two incest alarms when she sort of made out with her son Peter Jr. on the beach in 2011? Well, Harper’s Bazaar ran with that very-intimate-bordering-on-sexual familial energy for a mother/son shoot in its latest issue. So, you know, everyone looks great. But the sexy black dresses, the hand placement, the S&M undercurrent, Stephanie Seymour clutching a butcher’s knife while her baby bears curl around her long gams? Ahh, cringe, uncomfortable, can’t look. (Although, a Brant using an eyelash curler? Great shot.) The whole thing

Tax And Spend: Puerto Rico´s debt has been cut to junk by two credit rating agencies, prompting an outcry from officials of the recession-hit island that, after all, they´ve hiked taxes. Well, that´s the problem right there. It´s hard to not feel some sympathy for Puerto Rico´s new governor, Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who upon entering office last year inherited a hog-wallow of $70 billion in debt, according to a long piece in the weekend´s New York Times. The governor cut spending by 2%, balanced his budget a year ahead of schedule, reformed public pensions and reduced the territory´s deficit by 70%. It wasn´t

Mexican vigilante groups have paraded through a stronghold of the Knights Templar drug cartel in the troubled state of Michoacan. The vigilantes had driven into Apatzingan on Saturday, backed by armoured vehicles and troops. On Sunday, they drove round the town shouting slogans before convening at the city´s main square. The groups began an offensive last month aimed at ending the drug gang´s activities in Michoacan. The government recently reached a pact with the groups, granting them temporary legal status by redefining them as Rural Defence Corps. The Knights Templar cartel controls much of the drug trafficking in the area, carrying out killings and kidnappings

The organizers can now take a bow for the neighborhood´s loss. Hectoring the private chain with racially tinged language, wealthy poverty-racketeers from a foundation-funded group called the Portland African American Leadership Forum claimed that a $2.4 million store on a vacant lot in a run-down part of northeast Portland would gentrify the area, driving up retail prices and driving out the local black community. "We will expropriate whatever needs to be expropriated," Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro cautioned in reference to the new Law of Costs and Fair Prices. Concomitantly, the president urged private companies to comply with the new law. His statements came during the commemoration of the coup attempt of February 4, 1992. The Venezuelan president threatened to take "the most radical measures to protect our people´s economy." "I make an appeal to the country economic sectors, for work and self-regulation of commodities and prices. You have time until next Monday; otherwise, I will take the most radical measures," Maduro specified.

The republic is safe from any further vast left-wing legislative prescriptions for our ills. But Obama’s increasing job fatigue is, paradoxically, cause for serious concern. While he sits back, aides in the White House and in the agencies are busy enacting a stealth agenda of rules and regulations. And on the world stage, Washington’s withdrawal threatens national security. It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W. Bush settled his mind by clearing brush in Texas, Reagan at his ranch in Santa Barbara. Obama unfortunately finds the brush already cleared in Martha´s Vineyard and Hawaii.)

President Obama has repeatedly suspended parts of the Affordable Care Act without the consent of Congress. The latest unilateral action happened Monday night, when the administration announced another delay of the employer mandate, the law´s provision that businesses with more than 50 employees must provide their employees with insurance starting in 2014 or pay large fines. In July, the president decreed the mandate wouldn´t be enforced at all in 2014, and last night administration officials declared that businesses with 50 to 99 employees wouldn´t be penalized in 2015. Republicans have denounced such actions as "lawless." But if what the president has
