When Dashiell met Raymond,
or the day Hammett met Chandler

Los Angeles Times, by Carolyn Kellogg

Original Article

Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, the two masters of classic noir fiction, met just once. That was 78 years ago today, Jan. 11, 1936, in Los Angeles. The occasion was the first West Coast get-together for Black Mask Magazine. A photograph taken at the end of the meal shows 10 pulp writers gathered patiently around the end of a table. Chandler and Hammett are both standing: Chandler has the pipe. Hammett, the tallest, is at the far right. Of the 10, it was Hammett and Chandler whose work would become the most enduring. But there was no way of knowing

My two all time favorite noir writers. I own every book by both, and have enjoyed re-reading their works many times.

We don´t see eye-to-eye on some politics OP, but I thank you for posting this.

I have always thought Hammett was to Chandler what Ludlum was to LeCarre. Like them all, just different.

Of all the electoral maneuvers lately — Huckabee heading to Iowa, Santorum huddling with advisors, Allen West refusing to rule anything out, and even Joe Scarborough visiting New Hampshire — this is the most interesting. Is there room for Perry this time, though? Perry, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, will be in Des Moines and Davenport on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28. He will be sitting down with business leaders to discuss a wide range of issues, according to Bob Haus, an adviser in the state. He also will be taping an episode of “Iowa Press,” Iowa Public Television’s weekly public affairs program, Haus

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Charlie Crist doesn’t take to bed when he gets sick. He takes three Red Bulls, two cups of coffee, a glass of Mountain Dew, Sudafed and cough drops. Then, he discards the box of Mucinex his 81-year-old father suggested he take, pushes through the back door of a Fort Myers restaurant and wraps his arms around his Democratic supporters. “I can’t help it; I have to hug,” he says afterward, when asked whether he worries about passing on his cold to voters. “Can you even imagine not hugging?” Crist certainly couldn’t imagine it back on Feb.

The Obamacare Enrollment

Obamacare´s enrollment numbers are surging—for now. After a disastrous launch, the law´s backers are breathing a sigh of relief as enrollees flock to its insurance exchanges. But the totals are built on a shaky foundation, and at some point soon, the exchange enrollment figures are going to fall, perhaps by more than 1 million people. Right now, the administration is counting the total number of people who have selected an insurance policy under the law, rather than the number of people who´ve paid for it. But at some point, likely this spring, the administration will be forced to disclose how many people are

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a “social media analytic tool” that will give the government access to “full Twitter historical data,” according to a solicitation released on Tuesday. The agency is seeking feedback for a “possible future acquisition to provide near real time social media analysis.” HHS said it wants to use the tool for “ongoing monitoring” of public health issues. HHS provides a long list of requirements, including “access to real-time social media posts,” and “access to full Twitter firehose.” The agency requires an archive that goes back at least five years of “full Twitter historical data.”

WASHINGTON —First Mitt Romney loses a presidential election that he was predicted to win in a walk. Then he appears some 15 months later on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” to lecture the nation on how Republicans might lose the presidential election once again. “I don’t think Bill Clinton is as relevant as Hillary Clinton if Hillary Clinton decides to run for president in 2016,” Mr. Romney opined. Perhaps he forgot that Bill was elected president 21 years ago promising that a vote for him would mean acquiring two presidents “for the price of one.” Mr. Romney, Hillary is actually pretty

Did you hear about the two gay dads whose daughter got a nasty rejection note for her tie-dye birthday party? Or the homophobic slurs written around an Ivy League college dorm? Or the two lesbians who came outside one day and found homophobic words spray-painted on their garage door? Thanks to the Internet, the whole nation can be driven to outrage over rude and outrageous events — events that, it turns out, never happened or were perpetrated by the “victims” themselves. Urban legend debunking sites are perpetually busy with a host of issues. Consumer products, food, celebrity exploits and political misbehavior are

In a Facebook post, Palin notes that Pierson’s “life’s story is full of hardships she has fought to overcome, which taught her firsthand the importance of self-reliance, hard work, and the blessings of liberty.” One of those hardships includes a 1997 arrest for shoplifting. As the Dallas Morning News reported on Valentine’s Day, “In 1997, five days before her 21st birthday, Katrina Pierson, then named Katrina Lanette Shaddix, was arrested on a charge of theft of greater than $50 and less than $500.” Pierson,

Silly us. Here we’ve been criticizing the Obama administration for the dismal job growth we’ve seen these past five years. Turns out, we’ve got it backward. We’ve been measuring the president by the jobs the economy has been creating during his tenure. If two top Obama officials are right, we should count it an Obama success that more Americans will decide not to work. The latest weighing in is White House economic adviser Gene Sperling. On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” he responded to a Congressional Budget Office finding that raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, as the president proposes to do,

I will not explain to you what is happening in Kiev tonight other than to say that it is Vladimir Putin´s worst nightmare. The last time that this many people came out to the Independence Square (the Maidan) in Kiev, nine years ago, protesters undid the election of Victor Yanukovich and brought to power a Western-friendly government. In the process, they scared the living daylights out of Putin. (Snip)If it can happen in Kiev, in other words, it can happen in Moscow.

It has become such a repeated mantra in mainstream Republican circles, that it could be nearing cliché status: If the Republican Party is looking to stay politically viable in the future, it must win over Hispanic voters. But, thus far, it has become a case of easier said than done, considering Latinos have traditionally voted overwhelmingly Democrat. But the GOP need not lose hope, party insiders say — just look to Texas. A revealing Gallup poll unveiled this month found that in the Lone Star State, more Hispanics identify themselves as Republican than in the country as a whole. Nationwide, Democrats hold

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 17, 2014 – President Barack Obama has elevated the right to have sex with a member of the same sex to the level of universal “fundamental freedoms” in a new presidential statement criticizing Uganda. But critics say his promotion of homosexuality in a continent that overwhelmingly opposes that behavior amounts to a form of liberal “cultural imperialism.” Obama wrote on Sunday that he opposed a proposed bill in Uganda that would criminalize same-sex “marriages” and impose life imprisonment for repeated homosexual acts, among other provisions, because “as a country and a people, the United States has consistently

Foreign Policy: John Kerry calls global warming "the world´s most fearsome weapon of mass destruction." Has the secretary of state forgotten the world´s real WMDs? Or is he just off his medication? There´s a long list of Cabinet secretaries and senior aides to President Obama who have failed the nation so resoundingly they should be shown the door. But Secretary John Kerry, who dumped his military decorations in 1971 and was dumped by voters as a presidential candidate in 2004, should definitely be the first one out. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.) are now in position to end the Tea Party’s death grip on the Republican Party’s political future. Last week, Boehner and McConnell faced down the Tea Party’s threat to cripple the government when they supported raising the nation’s debt ceiling. That move prevented GOP political suicide. If the nation’s credit rating, stocks and the recovery went down the sewer because of Republicans’ refusal to raise the debt ceiling, the GOP’s chances in the midterm elections would have been severely damaged.
