What Liberals Don’t Get
About Single Payer

Bloomberg, by Ezra Klein

Original Article

Posted By:garnet, 1/13/2014 8:42:01 AM

Documentarian Michael Moore greeted the introduction of Obamacare with an admission many liberals will cheer. “Obamacare is awful,” he wrote. Its awfulness, Moore said, stems from “one fatal flaw: The Affordable Care Act is a pro-insurance-industry plan implemented by a president who knew in his heart that a single-payer, Medicare-for-all model was the true way to go.” Like Moore, I’d prefer a more nationalized health-care system. But his analysis relies on a common mistake that distorts both the benefits of single-payer systems and the deficiencies peculiar to Obamacare. Insurers are the bogeymen of American health care.

The one thing that is never addressed is shyster lawyers. All I hear on television (I virtually never watch it but my wife does) are ads from ambulance chasers with their jingles advertising class action suits for mesothelioma, pain and suffering, if you took this medicine or that, if your knee or hip replacement is defective, etc. Cut reimbursements to doctors, hospitals, drug manufacturers and medical device makers while not cutting malpractice insurance fees (by reining in the shysters) at the same time simply spells the end of any kind of medical care, period.

Exactly #1 tort reform is sorely needed, that would drop costs dramatically, but seeing how most politicians are ambulance chasers themselves, they continue to take care of their kind.

Health care in the US would be a lot cheaper if we actually had insurance. You know, like car insurance that pays for accidents but not oil changes, Home insurance that pays for fire damage but not roof repairs.

Health savings accounts with high deductible catastrophic insurance lowers costs significantly.

Michael Moore is not a " Documentarian", he´s is a propagandist that makes live action cartoons directed at lo-fos like Ezra K.
The answer is simple. The more the government involvement in healthcare, the worse and more expensive it will become for EVRYBODY.

#4 is right on both counts.

One drawback of single payer that the author did not mention is that it would take the gov´t at least 50 years to implement it based on their performance on obamacare.

We don´t need a single payer system, Medicare-for-all. Medicare patients generally have to buy supplemental insurance and have trouble finding physicians who are accepting Medicare patients.

We do need tort reform. There is too much CYA testing in medicine that we could do away with if malpractice were limited to gross negligence and actual improper medical practice.

What we really need is open pricing. If people knew what each test cost and then could talk with their Dr about the information those tests would provide it would allow the market to reign in testing because patients could choose what tests they truly need and are worth the expense. As it is now, there are no straight answers to "how much does this cost" and we do not have rational consumer decisions in healthcare.

Snitchgate -- Sharpton Is Still Lying

If the Rev. Al Sharpton, the bigoted, anti-Semitic, non-tax paying race-hustling poverty pimp, had any credibility left, it just vanished. The beneficiary of a lifetime of passes from our race-conscious mainscream media, Sharpton ran into an outlet not afraid of him -- The Smoking Gun. They obtained material that exposed Sharpton as an FBI "informant." Sharpton, of course, denies that this constitutes "snitching." No, he says he "volunteered" to "cooperate" with the FBI -- and for the most honorable of motives. Why would the government-hating "civil rights" leader cooperate with the feds?

The Republican Party is roiling with internal conflicts, say the analysts. The tea party is confronting the establishment. The noninterventionists are at war (forgive the expression) with the interventionists. The libertarians would like the party to endorse same-sex marriage. Fair enough. These conflicts will play out during the primaries in 2016, and we´ll discover whether they are serious fault lines or merely squabbles. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party, supposedly the firm fortress of the middle class, minorities and women, is actually showing some internal stresses as well. Little fissures are snaking through the crust, perhaps reflecting tectonic movement beneath. The president´s approval rating has

The first open enrollment period under the Affordable Care Act ended this week with roughly 7.5 million people obtaining policies through the new state insurance exchanges, including more than 1.3 million at Covered California. That´s an amazing and welcome result, considering how badly many of the exchanges stumbled when sign-ups began in October. Nevertheless, it´s far too early to judge the success or failure of the healthcare law, given that key tests of the program´s sustainability have yet to be passed. Almost all of the exchanges got off to a wretched start, particularly the federally managed ones that shared a mind-bogglingly

Obamacare hasn´t "won"—but it´s making a pretty impressive run. The headlines about the Affordable Care Act have turned positive lately, and they´re starting to pile up. The most dire predictions from the law´s critics simply haven´t panned out, and now Democrats are headed into another big health care fight—the confirmation of a new Health and Human Services secretary—with stronger real-world evidence than they´ve had before. There´s important information we still don´t have about enrollment, and big risks loom on the horizon. Things could change. But right now, the tide seems to be turning in the White House´s favor. Narratives feed on themselves, and

War on women alert: One of the most forceful fighters against misogyny in the modern era is under attack. Somali-born Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been a vocal critic of women´s oppression under Islamic law. She´s blasted arranged marriage, legally sanctioned domestic violence, genital mutilation, and the killing of adulteresses and rape victims. Despite being a supporter of abortion rights, an atheist, and an advocate of gay and women´s rights, she is despised by many who claim to be defenders of women´s rights. Over the years, they have worked to delegitimize her in the hopes that she will be silenced.

It was disappointing the other day to see President Barack Obama embracing the vulgar race hustler Al Sharpton. President Obama once eloquently confronted race in a memorable speech in Philadelphia in 2008. That speech was remarkable and honest and, to borrow a favorite word of the political left that still fawns over him, it was nuanced. But there was nothing particularly remarkable about Obama standing next to the preening Sharpton, speaking in New York to his National Action Network. Except that Obama expertly used a message of victimization to begin energizing black voters, who provide the electoral foundation for the Democratic Party.

The replacement of Kathleen Sebelius by Sylvia Mathews Burwell as the Secretary of Health and Human Services has been portrayed by the legacy “news” media as a new lease on life for Obamacare. The party line is that Sebelius was mortally wounded by GOP exploitation of a single uncharacteristic mistake—the botched rollout of Healthcare.gov—while Burwell is a brilliant Beltway veteran unsullied by controversy and possessing the very administrative skills needed to save Obama’s “signature domestic achievement.” (snip) This tale fails to conform to the facts, however.

Last Tuesday, our President swaggered into the Rose Garden to announce that 7.1 million people have signed up for health coverage through Obamacare’s exchanges and that all further argument about the future of his “signature domestic achievement” was pointless: “The debate over repealing this law is over. The Affordable Care Act is here to stay.” The problem with this claim is that no one with a basic grasp of arithmetic believes Obama’s enrollment figures, only about a quarter of the electorate supports his “reform” law, and it is still the target of multiple lawsuits challenging its constitutionality.

A new survey reveals that public esteem for Obamacare is continuing to plummet, hitting yet another historic low. (snip) The AP survey shows that a mere “26 percent of Americans support the Affordable Care Act.” (snip) When the law was passed, 39 percent of the public supported it. But the President, along with his accomplices in Congress and the media, assured us that this percentage would rise once “reform” was implemented. In other words, Obama and his minions are no better at prognostication than they are at managing websites, insurance exchanges or anything else relating to health care.

One of the reasons Clarence Thomas gives for the studious silence he maintains during Supreme Court hearings is that his fellow justices have shown an increasing tendency to talk too much during oral arguments, thus preventing advocates from presenting their arguments coherently. Yesterday’s Supreme Court hearing in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores and Conestoga Wood Specialties v. Sebelius suggest that Thomas is right. Paul D. Clement, who appeared on behalf of the two companies challenging the Obamacare contraception mandate, was repeatedly interrupted and badgered by justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Ginsburg.

The most febrile of George W. Bush haters liked to claim during his tenure that the former president "scared" them. There is far more reason to be frightened by President Barack Obama, because fecklessness and inconstancy trigger wars. The outstanding example of weakness inviting aggression was the conduct of the democracies toward Adolf Hitler in the 1930s. Though it has been retroactively tainted as shameful cowardice, the policy of appeasement grew out of a "war weariness" that was far more understandable than our own. Britain and France suffered millions of dead and wounded in World War I and were desperate to

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'
