A car bomb has killed at least nine people and wounded others at a bus station in central Baghdad. The bomb went off on Sunday morning outside the station in the Allawi area, local police said. Last Thursday, a suicide bomber blew himself up among army recruits in the same area, killing 23 people. Political tensions and violence have escalated in Iraq. The UN says 2013 was the deadliest year for five years, with more than 8,800 people killed. No group has yet admitted carrying out the bus station attack. The violence comes days after the UN´s envoy to Iraq warned of a "critical humanitarian

One of the most interesting announcements in last week´s Budget--well, for me at least, as someone who has no savings and doesn’t play bingo or drink much--was the new Alan Turing Institute: £220 million of government support will be invested into "big data and algorithm" research. Today, especially with the processing power of modern computing and enormous "big data" analysis, algorithms increasingly influence the media we read, the products we buy, and with whom we socialise. But most of us have no idea what they are. At its core, an algorithm is just a simple formula which must be followed

First daughter Sasha Obama cut a stylish figure in jeans and shades as the Obama girls visited the Great Wall of China today. Michelle Obama, Malia, 15, and Sasha, 12, were left alone to explore the Mutianyu section of the historical landmark in the northern Beijing suburbs though Chinese police officers looked on protectively. The three walked a stretch of the wall that looks out to a massive rock inscription on a hillside that reads in Chinese: ´Loyal to Chairman Mao.´ The country has been fascinated by Mrs Obama´s ´elegance´ during the weeklong visit to the country to promote educational

Global warming ´deniers´ are as bad as ´Holocaust deniers´ because climate change is as "as certain as Auschwitz", a Guardian columnist, Nick Cohen, has claimed. (H/T Marc Morano at Climate Depot) Anyone who disagrees with this is a "bed-wetting kidult", he says. Oh, and also, climate change deniers are a bit like people who believe in aliens. The movement was in the grip of "cognitive dissonance", a condition first defined by Leon Festinger and his colleagues in the 1950s . They examined a cult that had attached itself to a Chicago housewife called Dorothy Martin. She convinced her followers to

Britain’s justice system

Britain has generally been welcoming to those who come to this country to share in the benefits of our tolerant, democratic way of life and to make a useful contribution to society. The Islamic community has, for half a century, typified that mutual accommodation. Only recently has it become embarrassed by a tiny minority of radical extremists who are an even more immediate problem for their fellow Muslims than for the wider community. [Snip] More Muslim citizens stand to lose crucial rights under a sharia-influenced system than to benefit, and it is certainly not “anti-Muslim” for our legal system to

Tony Blair is celebrating another multi-million pound contract after his charity secured a key deal with the US government. This time, the former prime minister’s Africa Governance Initiative (AGI) has won a £3.3 million contract to play a key role in Barack Obama’s flagship African aid programme. [Snip] It is thought to be the third grant obtained by Mr Blair’s charity from USAID. The body was, until last February, overseen by Hillary Clinton, who, along with her husband Bill, the former US president, is a close friend of Mr Blair and his wife, Cherie.

Islamic law is to be effectively enshrined in the British legal system for the first time under guidelines for solicitors on drawing up “Sharia compliant” wills. Under ground-breaking guidance, produced by The Law Society, High Street solicitors will be able to write Islamic wills that deny women an equal share of inheritances and exclude unbelievers altogether. Al-Qaeda terrorists in Syria have been ordered to target the Queen at British sporting events such as Wimbledon and Cheltenham races. FA Cup matches are also on the list of recommended events, with ´martyrdom bombers´ advised to detonate explosives at the final whistle. If Friday’s Israeli media reports about last week’s Washington visit by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas prove true, President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry could well face their most difficult foreign policy challenge to date--namely, figuring out how to blame Israel for Abbas’ rejection of the three key points that compromise Secretary Kerry’s proposed framework agreement. Israel’s Channel 2 TV reported that Abbas used the occasion of last Monday’s White House meeting with Obama to flatly reject any possibility of accepting Kerry’s framework proposal which was crafted specifically to permit peace talks to continue after the expiration of Abbas´s

Venetians have voted overwhelmingly for their own sovereign state in a ‘referendum’ on independence from Italy. Inspired by Scotland’s separatist ambitions, 89 percent of the residents of the lagoon city and its surrounding area, opted to break away from Italy in an unofficial ballot. The proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The floating city has only been part of Italy for 150 years. The 1000 year–old democratic Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, was quashed by Napoleon and was subsumed into Italy

Normally when a country’s people give a referendum vote that the EU doesn’t like, they are just told to vote again to put it right. In the case of Crimea, however, where 96 percent of the people voted to return to Russia, the EU was in no position to ask them to think again. Even if they did, considering that Crimea, where the tsars, Tolstoy and Chekhov used to spend their summers, has been part of Russia for most of the past 230 years, that 60 percent of its people are ethnic Russians and that 82 percent speak Russian at

Jimmy Carter has been very active in the decades since his presidency, and his successors have occasionally called for his advice. Except, it turns out, the current occupant of the office. A clip from Carter’s upcoming Meet the Press interview reveals that President Obama is the first president since Carter left office not to solicit the Southern Democrat’s advice. Even worse, one of the writers behind the story is married to a political operative in the left wing Koch-demonization machine. The Washington Post was recently purchased by Jeff Bezos of Amazon, who ought to take a hard look at the reporters and editors who collaborated with the left wing smear machine, and while he is at it, should send a note of thanks to John Hinderaker, the blogger

Here’s a question I’ll bet nobody ever asked Jay Carney at a White House press briefing: Why does Michelle Obama’s mother live at the White House at taxpayer expense? (If someone has asked, please send link for me to stand corrected.) Now that Michelle Obama’s mother has caused a disruption on the latest exotic vacation for the first lady, perhaps it is time for some answers about why Marian Robinson is even on the trip to China. Worse, why is she appearing in official photographs with Chinese officials? Drudge is reporting in big bold lead letters that Marian Robinson is barking

ONCE upon a time I had a cat named Lucky, and the name fit. She turned up on our doorstep as a stray and stayed with us for 10 years, until her rather gruesome demise. (More about that later.) I liked her because she was a free spirit, and a survivor, going out for two, three, even five days, in all seasons. She’d show up when it suited her, waiting in the dark before dawn till I came downstairs and turned on my desk lamp. Then she’d make her presence known by rising up on her hind legs and gently

First lady Michelle Obama told students that freedom of speech should be a universal right during her extravagant, no-press-allowed tour of China — a hypocritical move that will surely draw the ire of critics, according to an expert. “That is troublesome. That goes beyond hypocritical, and I think the American media and the international media has every right to call her and the Obama administration on that — that they permitted that to happen,” said Tom Whalen, a political history professor at Boston University. “It makes you shake your head, albeit sadly.” The first lady stopped at Peking University in Beijing yesterday

Nations are “stronger and more prosperous” when people’s opinions are heard," Obama said during her trip to China, which employs some of the strictest limits on the Internet. “We respect the uniqueness of other cultures and societies, but when it comes to expressing yourself freely and worshipping as you choose and having open access to information, we believe those universal rights — they are universal rights that are the birthright of every person on this planet,” she said
