Sad Face: Bill Could Make it

...With Food Stamps

Well, there is some sanity in this world, it would seem. A bill making its way through the Colorado legislature, if passed, would prelude food stamp recipients from withdrawing EBT cash inside pot dispensaries. A no-brainer if ever there was one: Food stamps for a pot brownie? Colorado lawmakers want to make sure that doesn´t happen. A bill proposed by several Republicans would add marijuana dispensaries to liquor stores, gun shops and casinos as places where recipients of public assistance payments and food stamps can´t use their electronic benefits cards to access cash. There haven´t been any reports of public EBT cards being

The whole pot thing will eventually lose its luster amid car crashes, children high or endangered by parents who are wasted, throat and lung inflammation, wasted lives. Alcohol does that to a certain extent, but this is legal doubling down on affliction.

If you lend yourself money, should you charge interest on the loan? It would depend on how badly you need the interest income, wouldn´t it? If you were desperate for cash, you´d pay yourself a hefty interest rate. After all, you need the money, right? If you fail to see the absurdity in those questions, you might be a member of Congress. But what may be even more absurd than those questions is federal finance. You see, the federal government "lends" itself money and pays interest on those "loans." The prime example of this practice is the surpluses generated by the

Ted Cruz takes heat for telling

Once again, bitter feelings are being cast in the direction of Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. With the House passing the “clean” debt ceiling bill and sending it to the Democratic-controlled Senate, it was clear that this particular bill was going to be passed and sent to the president for his signature. But Cruz didn´t want to let Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., off the hook and give President Obama a blank check to once again increase the debt ceiling as we are drowning in red ink. He didn't want Republicans to simply vote against the bill, hiding behind the Democrat majority who were sure to pass it.

Getting a grip on the realities

The big story about the federal budget this week was the Republican Party´s struggle to deal with raising the debt ceiling. Last year´s big budget story was President Obama and the Democrats coming to grips with the so-called sequester, a policy gimmick that modestly slowed the growth of federal spending. Neither of these storylines came anywhere close to dealing with reality. The two teams of Washington insiders get hung up on these side issues because they´re better at symbolism than substance. For substance, start with the fact that the federal government is not $17 trillion in debt. That figure excludes

“Vote No; Hope Yes.” This might as well be the official motto of the Republican Party -- among both the establishment wing and the Tea Party wing. But the Tea Partiers also use this Vote No; Hope Yes strategy. I first encountered Vote No; Hope Yes during the debt-limit showdown last October. The government had been shut down for more than two weeks, and the Treasury was a few hours from crashing into the debt ceiling. A clean debt-limit hike was on the table -- no spending cuts, no budget reforms. In the recent intra-Republican drama, Senate Minority Leader Mitch

Democrats dream of driving U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell into retirement this year, ridding President Barack Obama of one of his fiercest opponents. Tea partyers have the same dream, but they say the Senate´s Republican leader actually is too accommodating to Democrats. This left-right squeeze is forcing McConnell to scrape as hard as ever to raise money and try to extend his 30-year Senate career into a sixth term. The squeeze also may be his salvation. It obscures divisions among the critics who drive up McConnell´s unpopularity ratings, often cited as his biggest problem. His Democratic critics can´t vote in the May 20 Republican

The first five years of life form the heart, mind, and soul of each person and the same applies to popular movements that resist the imposition of tyranny. Some are stunted by early adversity, some become perverted by power, and others thrive against all odds until victory is achieved. February 27th will mark five years since the first Tea Party rallies sprang up in American cities and towns just one week after Rick Santelli expressed obvious truths long ignored in the public debate. Wrapping up his soliloquy on another government bailout Santelli thundered, “We’re thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party.

The latest Gallup poll shows that not all of America is in economic doldrums. What "state" has the most optimism about the economy? Not a "state" at all, but the national capital: the District of Columbia. In fact, only in the District of Columbia do people have a net positive confidence in the economy -- at +19, according to the Gallup poll. All the states of the republic have a pessimistic view of the economy, with the least pessimistic state in the Gallup poll being Massachusetts (where the negative confidence rating in the economy of only -1). Now two key immigration hawks are pressing him for answers in a letter you might mistake as coming from Darrell Issa to Kathleen Sebelius. Reps. Walter Jones (R-NC) and Mo Brooks (R-AL) sent Boehner, House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, and the rest of the House GOP leadership team a letter asking ten detailed questions about Boehner´s immigration policies. On Oct. 20, 1998, eager to avoid another government shutdown weeks before midterm elections, then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich acceded to President Clinton´s demands by pushing a 40-pound, 16-inch thick, 3,825-page, pork-laden spending bill through the Republican-controlled chamber. At the time, the Associated Press reported, “Gingrich lectured his own party´s conservatives, labeling them ´the perfectionist caucus´ ” for demanding a tougher stand against Clinton. It was four years earlier that Republicans had taken over control of Congress, storming into Washington on a pledge to shrink the size and scope of government. In the winter of 1995-96, the failure of Clinton and

With some such thought in mind, Speaker John Boehner strode to the floor of the House to offer a "clean" debt ceiling bill and relied on Nancy Pelosi´s Democrats to pass it. They did. "Surrender" and "betrayal," are among the epithets coming the Speaker´s way. Yet Boehner was holding a losing hand. WASHINGTON, D.C., February 17, 2014 – President Barack Obama has elevated the right to have sex with a member of the same sex to the level of universal “fundamental freedoms” in a new presidential statement criticizing Uganda. But critics say his promotion of homosexuality in a continent that overwhelmingly opposes that behavior amounts to a form of liberal “cultural imperialism.” Obama wrote on Sunday that he opposed a proposed bill in Uganda that would criminalize same-sex “marriages” and impose life imprisonment for repeated homosexual acts, among other provisions, because “as a country and a people, the United States has consistently

Sarah Palin has made an endorsement in Texas. She’s backing tea party leader Katrina Pierson over Rep. Pete Sessions. In a Facebook post, Palin notes that Pierson’s “life’s story is full of hardships she has fought to overcome, which taught her firsthand the importance of self-reliance, hard work, and the blessings of liberty.” One of those hardships includes a 1997 arrest for shoplifting. As the Dallas Morning News reported on Valentine’s Day, “In 1997, five days before her 21st birthday, Katrina Pierson, then named Katrina Lanette Shaddix, was arrested on a charge of theft of greater than $50 and less than $500.” Pierson,

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.) are now in position to end the Tea Party’s death grip on the Republican Party’s political future. Last week, Boehner and McConnell faced down the Tea Party’s threat to cripple the government when they supported raising the nation’s debt ceiling. That move prevented GOP political suicide. If the nation’s credit rating, stocks and the recovery went down the sewer because of Republicans’ refusal to raise the debt ceiling, the GOP’s chances in the midterm elections would have been severely damaged.
