A National Strategy Funds State
Political Monopolies

New York Times, by Ncholas Confessore

By his third year as chairman of the Alabama Republican organization, Mike Hubbard believed his party had just about everything it needed to win control of the State Legislature. He had a plan: an 88-page playbook for the 2010 campaign, with detailed, district-by-district budgets and precise voter turnout targets. He had candidates: doctors, lawyers and small-business owners, most of them political novices recruited with an eye toward the anti-establishment fervor roiling the country. What Mr. Hubbard did not have was enough money. Alabama law barred corporations, deep-pocketed natural allies for state Republicans, from giving more than $500 to candidates and parties —

Comments:
A lesson in how political parties and politicians move money around and fund campaigns. Its almost as if they build the laws to fit around the loopholes.

Levin: Boehner, Cantor, Ryan
Expanding Welfare State

Breitbart´s Big Government, by Matthew Boyle    Original Article

Radio’s Mark Levin on Friday evening excoriated House GOP leadership, particularly House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan, for their immigration policies that will end up aiding an increased welfare state. We’ve talked about Obama and his economic record, which is worse than Jimmy Carter’s. Now, what are we going to do about it in this country? They have a new idea. In addition to increasing unemployment compensation, or I should say extending, in addition to more food stamps and more disability insurance—in other words, expand the welfare side of the state rather

It would be easy enough, at this stage, to add to the voluminous commentary on Gov. Chris Christie´s bridge scandal. But there is not much new to say, other than to observe that petty political retaliation is what blue-state conservatives like yours truly have come to expect from government, whether Republican or Democratic.{SNIP}Here´s the brutal truth. We don´t need more plans. We need principles. That´s what a conservative opposition party should stand for, especially one that ostensibly commits itself to free markets and the primacy and dignity of the individual. You wouldn´t trust your government to conduct a "traffic study"

FEC Flags Contributions to Grimm

The Federal Election Commission flagged Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island) for receiving excess campaign contributions from House Speaker John Boehner, former VP nominee Paul Ryan and Grimm’s ex-wife’s father. Grimm spokesman Nick Iacono said the campaign is fixing its records after what he called a routine inquiry resulting from clerical errors. “Our campaign will be making the appropriate edits in a timely fashion,” Iacano said. But for Grimm, even accidentally accepting excess campaign cash is notable, a reminder that he remains under federal investigation for allegations that include knowingly accepting illegal contributions during his 2010 campaign.

GOP preps for its big immigration play

Immigration reform: surprisingly not dead! That’s the message top House Republicans are sending as the new year kicks off. Speaker John Boehner is working with his caucus this month on a set of “principles” that will guide them in crafting a legislative response to the bipartisan Senate bill that passed long ago. In a very heartening sign for immigration activists, House Judiciary Chair Bob Goodlatte – the caucus’ point man on the issue – suggested to Telemundo on Friday that these principles could include some kind of legalization program for the nation’s undocumented immigrants. That would be a breakthrough for

During a speech Friday at a Texas Public Policy Foundation conference, Sen. Ted Cruz criticized President Obama for lying to Americans when he told them they could keep their health insurance plans and doctors if they liked them. "It was kind of a stuff-burger," Cruz said after mocking the New York Times editorial page for saying that Obama "misspoke" to the American people. "You know there comes a point with the left-wing media, you can´t even make fun of them anymore," Cruz said. "You just simply say what they said." Cruz added that Obama´s administration was surrounded by lawlessness. "There are many, many disturbing

Why America Is Headed Toward

Like Enron, Greece, and Donald Trump before us, America is about to go bankrupt. Unfortunately, our bankruptcy will probably be more Enron and less Donald Trump because we´re very unlikely to come back bigger and better in the lifetime of anyone reading this column. Instead, most Americans are probably going to experience skyrocketing taxes, spiraling inflation, widespread disorder, and a dramatically reduced standard of living. This isn’t a crisis that our great-grandchildren will have to figure out one day. To the contrary, it´s entirely possible it will occur within the next decade and unless we make big changes no one

Compassionate conservatives strike

When the Tea Party movement emerged to challenge President Obama in 2009, it also posed a counterweight to the “compassionate conservative” wing of the Republican Party, which was defined by the expansionist policies of President George W. Bush. After years of being marginalized, compassionate conservatives – emboldened by the overreach of Tea Party conservatives during last fall’s government shutdown fight – are attempting to reassert control over the party.{SNIP}Throughout the piece, Gerson and Wehner make arguments that are very difficult to distinguish philosophically from liberalism.

The U.S. Chamber, the nation’s largest business-lobbying group and a traditional supporter of Republicans, has in recent years squared off against lawmakers aligned with the Tea Party on issues including trade, U.S. Export-Import Bank reauthorization and the federal budget. “In 2014, the chamber will work to protect and expand a pro-business majority in the House and advance our position and our influence in the Senate,” Donohue said

On Wednesday, Attorney General Janet Mills demanded in a letter that Gov. Paul LePage release a publically funded report crafted by the controversial Alexander Group to anyone who requested it. When asked in an interview how he responded, LePage said simply: “Tell her to sue me.” The letter from Mills — a Democrat who was elected to office when her party regained majorities in the House and Senate in 2012 — was addressed to LePage and Mary Mayhew, whose Department of Health and Human Services signed a $925,000 contract for the Rhode Island-based Alexander Group to study Maine’s welfare system, including the

The network, he alleges, decided on its own that concerns about large influxes of immigrants were "not acceptable views" and did not cover them. Robinson, who is speaking out against his own network´s immigration coverage before the release of the new BBC documentary The Truth About Immigration, has told several media outlets that the new reporting is meant to correct what has been a chronic deficiency in coverage of immigration at the network: that concerns about

Since July 1, ABC, CBS and NBC have devoted a total of just 2 minutes and 8 seconds to the IRS imbroglio. The pizza arrived, steaming and delectable, a smoked-mozzarella-and-sausage pie presented to Mayor Bill de Blasio like a gilded offering to a visiting caliph. The mayor, on a pilgrimage on Friday to Goodfellas, a venerable Staten Island pizzeria, smiled, nodded at his slice and then proceeded to do the unthinkable: eat it with a knife and fork. Cue the foodie firestorm. “Disaster,” declared a writer at New York magazine, citing the longstanding city protocol of devouring pizza, no matter how greasy, with the hands, and the hands only. One website called it Mr. de Blasio’s first mistake as mayor.

In the cable news ratings race for 2013, Fox News was the clear winner, with MSNBC and CNN duking it out to spin the Silver Medal round, but there’s on category in which MSNBC achieved a level of dominance that none of its competitors can touch. For the same time slot and age demo, CNN held the edge with Hispanic viewers, in a much more level field. 2012 saw MSNBC achieve stunning

You can feel the charm when you watch her operate in person, that Sarah Palin. You don’t expect it, but it’s there – the awkward mix of pseudo-authenticity and charisma, the smooth way with a room full of reporters, the way she just carries on, regardless. Me, I was taken aback. She’s practically my new bestie, now. Squeezed my hand, called me “honey,” even stopped to squeeze my shoulder on her way out and thank me. We had a wee chat and a laugh. Palin was here Friday for an early breakfast event to promote her new series on a fairly obscure

Every night’s going to be Halloween night for Hillary. The skeletons in her closet are signing up now for the conga line. They’re impatient to put on their dancing shoes for the 2016 presidential campaign. Like it or not, it’s just around the corner. Even when her friends try to raise their voices in Hillary’s defense, what comes out is mostly static. The attempted whitewash by The New York Times of the hash she made of Benghazi only reminds everyone that she was asleep when the telephone rang at 3 o’clock in the morning. Robert M. Hi, everybody. Yesterday, we learned that in 2013, our businesses created 2.2 million new jobs — including 87,000 last month. Our unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since October 2008. And across our broader economy, there are signs of progress. [Snip] We’ve cut our deficits by more than half. Thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of the American people, our economy is growing stronger. But we know we’ve got more work to do together. It depends on the success of the American people. It depends on your ability to make ends meet and provide for your families.

Chris Christie was directly tied to the traffic-clogging closure of local access lanes leading to the bridge in Fort Lee. Democrats have sought for months to link the lane closures to the
