What to Expect From This
Year´s Detroit Auto Show

Associated Press, by Staff

From brawny pickup trucks and growling high-performance cars to economical subcompacts, the North American International Auto Show in Detroit likely will have something that appeals to every driver. Show organizers expect more than 50 new model introductions when the show kicks off Monday and Tuesday with 5,000 journalists attending the press days. What the automakers introduce is crucial because sales growth is starting to slow and new models tend to capture more buyers than older ones. Ford is expected to steal the show with a new version of the F-150 pickup truck, but there are other notable cars and trucks coming. Chrysler

What America needs is more expensive cars.
Everyone has jobs and plenty of disposable income.

I´m surprised GM is still pushing the small pickups GMC Canyon/Chevy Colorado. The market for small trucks is not that big and the current GM models are not well rated. Most manufacturers (including Ford) abandoned that market.

One of the most famous quotes about Fox News is Charles Krauthammer’s quip that Fox’s success was due to its appeal to a niche market: half the country. There are times it seems almost an understatement, so thoroughly does Fox dominate the ratings. And in fact it’s almost as though Krauthammer’s “half the country” might refer to the speakers instead of the audience. Just as talk radio thrived as an alternative to mainstream liberal news and opinion, so too did Fox suddenly offer otherwise-marginalized right-of-center views to a public who didn’t want to be as ideologically cloistered as is the

It´s Really Hard to

When a massive whale carcass washed up on a Scottish shore on Saturday, beach-goers´ first thoughts were to mourn the death of the majestic creature. Their second thought, though, was more tricky: How should they get rid of the massive body? The carcass of a 13.8-meter sperm whale — that would be just over 45 feet — washed up on Scotland´s Portobello beach on Saturday morning, fouling the air and water of the popular beach site. But because of its hefty size, the decomposing whale couldn´t be removed that easily, and floated just above the shoreline for several days. Four

Washington -- The U.S. military has obtained new video apparently made by those holding the lone American prisoner of war, Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. A U.S. military official told CNN the clip shows the Wood Valley, Idaho, native in diminished health from the effects of close to five years in captivity. He was seized in Afghanistan in June 2009 and is believed held by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network in Pakistan, the official said. The so-called proof-of-life video, the first of him in nearly three years, has a reference to December 14, 2013. CNN has not seen the video. U.S. efforts to free Bergdahl, including

President Barack Obama has a plan to save the Senate’s tenuous Democratic majority: Sell a populist message, try to make Obamacare work better and raise lots of cash. And unlike previous years when Senate Democrats were mostly left to fight on their own, the White House is wasting no time coordinating its political and policy agenda with congressional leaders and vulnerable lawmakers. The 55-member Senate Democratic Caucus will meet with Obama on Wednesday at the White House, the first such session since October.

A-Rod follows Lance Armstrong

Alex Rodriguez, the highest-paid player in the history of baseball, wants the public to believe that he is a victim — the innocent target of a witch hunt by Major League Baseball. In the best tradition of doper-cyclist Lance Armstrong, he filed suit Monday to prove it. It´s going to be a tough sell. To believe A-Rod, you need to don the rosiest of rose-colored glasses. You have to believe: That a player with a 10-year, $275 million contract, who can afford the world´s best medical care, sought "nutrition" advice from Tony Bosch, a fake doctor at a Florida strip mall. That more

AUSTIN, Texas — In October, Susan, a woman who lives in Willacy County in Texas’ southernmost tip, found out she was pregnant. She is married and has three children, and for a few weeks last fall, she couldn’t afford her birth control. Her condition, to her, was not entirely good news. “I weighed out the pros and cons,” she said. “But I didn´t want to have another baby.” Susan asked her gynecologist about getting an abortion, but the doctor said she didn’t perform the procedure. For women in her area, there was only one place to go: Reproductive Services of Harlingen, where

Oregon will consider a switch to the federal health care exchange next year amid ongoing problems with its online enrollment program, Politico Pro reports. The state’s exchange, Cover Oregon, still cannot process an entire enrollment online — a problem that is not expected to be repaired until after the 2014 enrollment period ends in March. That has state officials weighing several options including scrapping its own enrollment system and moving to HealthCare.gov, the federal enrollment portal which is working better now after its own disastrous start. Switching to the federal site could be considered a significant political defeat for the state and

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is in Tampa today, Monday, January 13, for an ObamaCare outreach event, and she owes Floridians an answer. Why should taxpayers have to bail out health insurance companies in the increasingly likely event that ObamaCare leaves them with financial losses? The answer should be simple. Whatever larger differences we have about ObamaCare, we should completely eliminate any chance of a taxpayer-funded bailout for health insurers. Unfortunately, this possibility exists and is growing more likely by the day. Washington’s authority for this bailout was buried deep inside ObamaCare, in the law’s section 1342. This provision authorized what

The ancient Greek tragedies involved the downfall of the hero being caused by what the classical scholars call “hubris.” Because human nature remains constant, we know the Greeks were onto something. Hubris causes many heroic figures to fall even in our time and no better example can be found than the Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez. If the definition of “hubris” is excessive pride or defiance of the gods leading to a tragic downfall, then A-Rod defines a tragic hero. The only remaining question is how tragic a fall will he endure? Some tragic figures behave so badly they turn the

Black dogs don´t get as adopted as easily as others animals of other colors. The reason is largely because of some common misconceptions about them. Black dogs are mischaracterized as mean and potentially violent and according to NBC News. Black Dog Syndrome is a phenomenon in which dogs with black fur often go unadopted because of misinformed stereotypes. Black dogs are are euthanized at a much higher rate than dogs with different complexions. Many owners of black dogs say they are sweet, lovable, but also unwanted. The chances of being adopted are poor if you´re a black dog.

Last month, the Paul Ryan-Patty Murray discretionary spending bill was unveiled. Sort of unveiled, anyway: it didn’t actually exist, but was summarized in a series of bullet points. Now the bill has taken tangible form. Here it is, all 2,860 pages, including explanatory statements: The House is expected to vote on the omnibus spending bill tomorrow, less than 48 hours after copies became available. No one will have read the law; this is government by press release. The bill is advertised at $1.1 trillion, but in the brief time available, Republican Senate staffers have found that it actually spends $18
