WASHINGTON — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told her party at a caucus meeting that the midterm elections have to be won day by day over the next 10 months despite this week’s loss of two House Democrats. But despite the fact that she’ll hardly miss a departing Blue Dog Democrat who has voted against the president’s key agenda items, she maintained that the right would send moderates into her party’s “bipartisan” arms come November. “We have to use every day, every week; one good day, one good week, one good month, one good quarter on top of another,

Lawmakers on Sunday quickly rejected a Republican proposal that would allow military personnel to carry concealed weapons on bases — raised just days after the horrific Fort Hood base shooting that left four soldiers dead. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Mike McCaul raised the controversial idea on “Fox News Sunday,” explaining that soldiers shouldn’t be defenseless on their own bases. “We should be looking at the idea of senior leadership at these bases, give them the ability to carry a weapon,” the Texas Republican said. “They defend us overseas and defend our freedom abroad, so the idea that they

Several sheriff’s deputies were injured and about 100 people were arrested Saturday night when a spring-break party in Isla Vista in Santa Barbara County turned violent, authorities said. About 15,000 people attended Deltopia, a party near UC Santa Barbara, when a disturbance broke out about 9:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive, according to a statement from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department. The incident began when a UCSB police officer was struck in the head with a backpack containing bottles of alcohol, according to the statement. When an arrest was made, the crowd became unruly. President Obama is imposing his policies directly on federal contractors. This week, he will sign an executive order that would prohibit federal contractors from retaliating against employees who discuss their pay with each other. The prohibition on the wage "gag rules" is similar to language in a Senate bill aimed at closing a pay gap between men and women. That legislation is scheduled for a vote this week, though it is not likely to pass. In addition, Obama on Tuesday will direct the Labor Department to adopt regulations requiring federal contractors to provide compensation data based on sex and race.

WASHINGTON - At the prodding of business organizations, House Republicans quietly secured a recent change in President Barack Obama´s health law to expand coverage choices, a striking, one-of-a-kind departure from dozens of high-decibel attempts to repeal or dismember it. Democrats describe the change involving small-business coverage options as a straightforward improvement of the type they are eager to make, and Obama signed it into law. Republicans are loath to agree, given the strong sentiment among the rank and file that the only fix the law deserves is a burial. "Maybe you say it helps (Obamacare), but it really helps

EVANSTON, Ill.— Northwestern football coach Pat Fitzgerald sided with his university against the formation of a players union in his first public comments Saturday, repeating what he already told his team: "I believe it´s in their best interests to vote no." Fitzgerald addressed the issue for the first time with his squad Wednesday, a week after Peter Ohr, regional director for the National Labor Relations Board, ruled that Northwestern´s scholarship football players were "employees." That decision entitled players to conduct a secret-ballot vote on forming a union to pursue collective bargaining with the school, a move that could significantly alter

The British historian Lord Acton reminds us that “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” That quote from a letter he wrote in 1887 was as true then as it does today. In light of Benghazi, Fast and Furious, or IRS probes of conservative groups in the midst of a presidential reelection, one might conclude that I’m referring to the corruption of government officials. Perhaps. The real and absolute corruption I refer to is the power of the mainstream media to decide what it believes to be news while further exercising their power to ignore stories that don’t

In Dearborn, Mich., home to over 40,000 Americans of Arab descent, some Muslim parents have complained about flyers handed out at public schools advertising an Easter egg hunt at a local Presbyterian church. The Muslim parents assert that the flyers – emblazoned with the word “Eggstravaganza!” – violate the separation of church and state widely ascribed to the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, reports the Detroit Free Press. Students at three Dearborn elementary schools received the flyers. A large number of Muslim students attend the schools. More than 3,000 gun rights activists rallied on the lawn of the Connecticut state Capitol Saturday to protest the one-year anniversary of the state´s stringent gun control laws, passed in the wake of the Newtown school shooting. Organized by the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, the rally lasted from noon to 2 p.m. and featured political candidates, 2nd Amendment rights supporters and attorneys as speakers. The government of Connecticut is on course for a showdown of sorts with gun owners because tens of thousands of the state´s gun owners have defied the new gun laws that effectively banned 100 types of

The helicopter, filmed during testing by the Naval Research Laboratory, was piloted by a 100-pound (45-kg) sensor and software package that officials said can turn any rotary-winged aircraft into a virtually autonomous drone able to fly with minimal input from the Marine Corps troops it was designed to serve. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night.
