To Stop Procrastinating, Look
to Science of Mood Repair

Wall Street Journal, by Sue Shellenberger

Procrastinators, take note: If you´ve tried building self-discipline and you´re still putting things off, maybe you need to try something different. One new approach: Check your mood. Often, procrastinators attempt to avoid the anxiety or worry aroused by a tough task with activities aimed at repairing their mood, such as checking Facebook or taking a nap. But the pattern, which researchers call "giving in to feel good," makes procrastinators feel worse later, when they face the consequences of missing a deadline or making a hasty, last-minute effort, (Snip) Increasingly, psychologists and time-management consultants are focusing on a new strategy: helping

Comments:
Not the stuff that LDotters usually care to read. But I have been indulging in just what the article talks about - putting off tasks and giving myself an after-Christmas gift of fooling around time. Mostly on the computer.

So here I am. And I´m sharing this with those of you who are imperfect like me. Happy "on-the-ball-no-more-procrastination" New Year!

(I have to start by wishing my dear grandson a very Happy Birthday and sending off his gift by mail. His birthday is today. See what I mean?)

He also advises procrastinators to practice "time travel"—projecting themselves into the future to imagine the good feelings they will have after finishing a task, or the bad ones they will have if they don´t.

I do that when doing something that I have to do but don´t want to do ... like laundry. I really don´t like doing laundry. I won´t have bad feelings if I don´t do the laundry - I won´t have anything to wear!

I thought about procrastinating but then couldn´t decide if it was the thought of procrastinating or the action of procrastinating. Thus until I can decide whether it was thought or action I´ll just put it off for awhile.

A U.N.-commissioned panel says climate change is hurting the growth of crops, affecting the quality of water supplies and forcing wildlife to change the way it lives – but what if it’s all just smoke and mirrors? IN A major development in the search for MH370, Angus Houston has confirmed the Ocean Shield has detected signals consistent with aircraft black boxes, describing the lead as the most promising yet. Air Chief Marshal Houston called the development significant, saying “this is the most promising lead, probably in the search so far, it’s probably the best information we’ve had”. The search coordinator told reporters more signals have been detected by a towed pinger locator deployed by the Australian vessel Ocean Shield. “Today, I can report some very encouraging information which has unfolded over the last 24 hours,” he told

THE missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may have flown around Indonesian airspace on the night it disappeared, in what may have been a deliberate attempt to avoid radar detection. CNN reported a senior Malaysian government source saying that the missing jet made the detour after it had left the range of Malaysian military radar. The latest details emerged as new satellite calculations put the likely location of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in the same spot where Chinese patrol vessel Haixun 01 detected sounds coming from about 4,500m underwater on two consecutive days.

An eye-catching A.P. story, published Thursday, revealed that, in 2010, the United States Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D.) covertly deployed a social-media program in Cuba in the hope of bringing about a Cuban Spring. The network, called ZunZuneo, was offered to Cubans via the country’s mobile-phone network as a free text service, and attracted forty thousand subscribers before mysteriously ending operations in 2012. The contractors who ran the program are said to have concealed its U.S.-government origins via an offshore system of front companies and foreign servers, and to have collected data on subscribers’ “political tendencies” and “receptiveness,” among other

Not when the topic is the CIA’s use of enhanced interrogation techniques _ widely regarded as torture _ against detainees who were suspected terrorists.(Snip) Republicans saw the report as largely an indictment of a Bush-era policy, he said, and because the program is now defunct, it became easier to make political points.

On Thursday, the Senate Intelligence Committee voted to declassify and release hundreds of pages of its report on U.S. terrorist interrogation practices. EVERETT, Wash. — As medical examiners painstakingly piece together the identities and lives of the people killed when a mudslide wiped out a small Washington community, a mystery troubles them. One of the 30 bodies found does not fit with descriptions on the missing persons list, which, as of Thursday included 15 people, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff´s Office. The only clue to the man´s identity is his gold molars, said Heather Oie, operations manager at the Snohomish County Medical Examiner´s Office. Democrats are facing a senior problem that could get even worse this year. The party has traditionally had trouble with older voters, losing the group aged 65 and over by 21 points in 2010 — when Republicans picked up 63 seats — and by 12 points in the 2012 presidential race. Seniors are the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc in midterm years, turning out in higher numbers than Democratic base voters.
