Replica Ferraris Raise Ire of Auto Maker
Wall Street Journal, by David Roman

ALBALAT DELS SORELLS, Spain—No luxury car maker had ever mounted an operation quite like the assembly lines tucked into José María Calero´s warehouses amid the orange groves in eastern Spain. Here, he and his team turned out sleek cars on demand for buffs who had always dreamed of owning Ferraris. Among the satisfied customers was María Lapiedra, a minor Spanish celebrity, Latin-language scholar and soft-core porn actress. "I made more friends than ever when I had my Ferrari," said Ms. Lapiedra on her website. "Everyone wanted a ride," she added. Clearly unhappy with Mr. Calero were Ferrari executives who had never heard of

"Everyone wanted a ride." We´re talking about the car, right, Miss Lapiedra?? Latin-language scholar AND a soft-core porno actress? Impressive.

I like the note at the end of the article about the bogus Ferrari Daytona Spyder that Don Johnson drove around in the early Miami Vice episodes. It looked a little too Corvette-like to be real.

A dangerous path to go down. Replicars have been around forever. As long as you are not trying to sell it as a real thing, I have no problem with it. The lunacy of the Batmobile is stupid. If I was Warner Brothers, I would be happy as a clam with all the free advertising. To me, you would have to prove that your company is facing real damage and loss of sales because of something someone did. Did Warners lose ticket sales? (Where´s all the furor when Japanese car makers rip off Mercedes and BMW styling cues anyways?)

Would like to see loser pays enacted around the world, and shut these lawsuits down.

Oh, and Ferrari, you lost my lust when you went to goofy, jet-boy paddle shifters and you made your cars freaking ugly.

Enjoy getting spanked by the new Corvette in every single category.

Slightly off topic, but in regard to putting logos on fakes:

Several years ago, I hauled my treasured piano down to an Austin restorer to get it reworked and refinished. The man had a lot of interesting stories to tell. When he discovered the Kimball sticker intact on the inside of the lid, he was very happy, because it could be removed and replaced. He told of a woman who brought a beautiful off-brand grand to his workshop and asked him to put a Steinway label on it when complete. It was a lucrative restore assignment and he hated to tee her off by refusing, but his conscience allowed him only to attach a "Steinway" label. She was happy, not realizing that an authentic decal would say "Steinway & Sons".

True, "replicars" have been around a long time (there used to be a kit for VW Beetles that could make it look like a Lambo... until you started the engine).
But this guy is stealing the trademarked logo and has shamelessly put it all over the car, inside and out.
"But the customers know what they are buying," says Calero. So what? Completely beside the point you thief!

So, in this country you can be a "replica soldier" by wearing a uniform bedecked with medals, and tell everyone you were Special Forces in Vietnam, etc., and that´s considered "OK" by the courts, but if you place a faux Ferrari body on a Toyota, that´s a crime?

Oscar Pistorius’ pathetic display

Give this retching, crying, sniveling, vomiting degenerate an Academy Award! I don’t know how much more I can take of Oscar Pistorius’ rubbish. A prosecutor on Wednesday ordered the athlete known as the “Blade Runner’’ for the carbon-fiber blades that replace his lower legs — which he’s not afraid to use as props to score pity — to “take responsibility’’ for slaughtering his beautiful girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day, 2013. He told Pistorius, 27, to look at a picture of the blood- and human-tissue-covered head of the model and TV personality, who died, like a caged animal, at age 29 inside

Rolling Stone’s Constitution cover is in need of an amendment. The cover of the storied rock magazine’s latest issue features a naked Julia Louis-Dreyfus with a faulty U.S. Constitution inked on her back. Just above her derriere sits the signature of one of the nation’s most prominent Founding Fathers, John Hancock. There’s only one problem, however: John Hancock didn’t sign the U.S. Constitution. Hancock, president of the Second Continental Congress, actually signed the Declaration of Independence. His autograph on that document is so stylish and large, in fact, that it inspired the use of his full name as a synonym for

RICHGROVE, Calif. — In March 2013, a man with brooding, mahogany eyes and a walrus mustache traveled from his home in California to visit relatives in Alabama. The trip did not end well. When a business acquaintance insulted Jose Manuel Martinez´s daughter, Martinez put two bullets in the man´s head, officials said. It was a matter "of family honor," Errek Jett, an Alabama prosecutor, said Wednesday. But it was not, it turned out, the first time he had killed — far from it, authorities believe. Martinez, 51, was charged Tuesday with killing nine men mostly in California´s Central Valley, part of a

A Southern California city declared the factory that produces Sriracha hot sauce a public nuisance Wednesday night, and gave its operators 90 days to make changes that stop the spicy odors that have prompted complaints from some residents. The Irwindale City Council´s action allows city officials to enter the factory and order changes if the odors persist after the 90-day deadline. The measure passed by a unanimous 4-0 vote. The decision came despite testimony by air-quality experts that progress was being made toward a resolution. Republicans are demanding greater transparency on how much the administration spent to promote and implement Obamacare — and hitting back at President Obama´s claim that he “didn´t make a hard sell.” The new effort comes after Obama´s claim that the administration met its goal of enrolling more than 7 million people without spending billions. “We didn´t make a hard sell,” Obama said. “We didn´t have billions of dollars to spend on commercials like our critics did.” But both Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill estimate the administration has spent roughly $4 to 5 billion to get the Affordable Care Act running, including hundreds

Despite the Obama administration´s insistence that everyone -- the government, insurance companies, doctors, medical providers, and consumers -- will reap benefits from Obamacare, a recent grant proposal by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) suggests that the agency does have concerns about the ongoing financial viability of one player in the health care market: so-called family planning centers. HHS intends to spend up to $800,000 to fund studies to "conduct data analysis and related research and evaluation on the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Title X funded family planning centers." How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. This is a soothing interpretation, as it begins from the hypothesis that the contest between conservatives and the GOP elite is a family feud. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally

A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact.
