Meryl Streep attacks Walt Disney
on antisemitism and sexism

While honouring Emma Thompson at a dinner for the National Board of Review on Tuesday night, Meryl Streep made an extraordinary speech that criticised Walt Disney for being a "gender bigot" who was a member of an antisemitic lobbying organisation. Streep, perhaps Hollywood´s most respected and beloved actor, showed she is far from a cosy establishment figure as she carefully trod a line between praising Thompson and attacking Disney. The very film Thompson was being celebrated for, Saving Mr Banks, is based around Walt Disney´s persuading of PL Travers to allow him to adapt Mary Poppins. According to Variety´s Ramin Setoodeh,

Is Meryl Streep the one who whined to Congress about having to spend five minutes scrubbing Alar from her children´s apples? "Five minutes is a very long time", she said.

I believe most of the CEO´s in Uncle Walt´s time would have hired men over women as a rule. As for being ant-Semitic, she is only going by one person´s opinion. Disney was the only head of a major studio that wasn´t Jewish and he seemed to have gotten along with them, and in the 1950´s he hired Jewish actors and behind the scenes people. His daughter or brother´s folks need to step up and defend him if these charges are baseless.

Walt Disney was part of a Hollywood that made movies people wanted to watch, movies that were made to entertain. I can see why Ms. Streep doesn´t understand those kind of people. Now movies must be ´edgy´, ´slanted´ and ´send a message´. That´s why I don´t go to movies anymore.

Meryl Streep has just completed playing The Witch in the film version of the Sondheim musical "Into the Woods" ... maybe she is having trouble shaking off the part.

More to the point, "Into the Woods" is a production of none other than the Disney studio. So she takes what I am sure is a very considerable paycheck from the Disney company and then bashes their namesake and company founder weeks later. Now that´s integrity! Take that, Walt Disney!

La Streep would be better "attacking" a history book or maybe a Disney biography or two, and get some facts right and some perspective in place. Surely her Vassar and Yale degrees taught her how to do basic research?

It all seems so pointless. Disney was probably not a Saint. So what?

One trap to avoid is confusing a fact with a desire or advocacy?

Suppose that Walt, about 1955, had said there were no Negro admirals in the US Navy?

Would that have indicated his approval? Or would it have been a fact?

Suppose MLK Jr. had said the same thing?

Surely she could have reserved her comments for another occasion and not this event to honor Emma Thompson. She totally erased Emma from the occasion in my view.

In any case, Hollywood is sexist, but it´s the kind of sexism which favors women. It´s the sexism which allows mildly intelligent women who look good in provocative clothes to get highly-paid roles. I mean, how do you think Raquel Welch got to to play Loana in 1,000,000 Years B.C.?

If I were Meryl, I´d be saying that Hollywood is a woman´s best friend.

The administration’s “smart diplomacy” does not include providing aid to those who fight internal oppression or outside aggression and whose victory potentially would obviate the need for direct U.S. action. Hence, President Obama gave Iran’s Green Revolution the cold shoulder in June 2009. He denied aid, and then dragged his feet on delivering aid to non-jihadi rebels in Syria. Now, it should come as no surprise, he is unwilling to provide Ukraine with military aid or intelligence to defend itself against Russian aggression.

WASHINGTON — The Census Bureau, the authoritative source of health insurance data for more than three decades, is changing its annual survey so thoroughly that it will be difficult to measure the effects of President Obama’s health care law in the next report, due this fall, census officials said. The changes are intended to improve the accuracy of the survey, being conducted this month in interviews with tens of thousands of households around the country. But the new questions are so different that the findings will not be comparable, the officials said. An internal Census Bureau document said that the new questionnaire

Very few of the young Americans who carried President Obama to electoral victory in 2008 have chosen to follow him into public service, The New York Times reports on Monday. Which made us wonder who inspired the current Congress to seek office. The answer? Two Republican stalwarts. There are a lot of caveats that should be applied to the Times story, not the least of which is that most candidates for office tend to skew a little older than the 18-year-olds that cast their first votes six years ago. But regardless, Jason Horowitz writes, "[u]nlike John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan,

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

But since President Obama worries more about the threat of terrorists´ improvised nuclear device going off in a major American city than anything Russia can throw at us, I was wondering if the government had deigned to share with us citizens any tips for, you know, surviving something their own intelligence points to as the likeliest unlikely Black Swan event. Well, no. And yes. No — very few people in Washington, D.C., who work for the government have any idea what they would do if a 10-kiloton nuclear device exploded at the intersection of 16th and K

Hank Aaron’s recent comments about the need for America to realize that racism is still very much alive and thriving — only now due to those who wear “neckties and starched shirts” rather than KKK hoods — has sparked an angry backlash and many fans are turning the tables, calling the baseball legend himself a racist. “Hank Aaron is a s*****g piece of [expletive] [racial slur],” one man said in an email to the Atlanta Braves’ front office, one of the teams Mr. Aaron used to play for, CBS News reported. “My old man instilled in my mind from a

Megyn Kelly’s "Kelly File" is a great news show. She’s incisive, informed and customarily handles the toughest guest with aplomb. But her lengthy interview of Facebook C.O.O. Sheryl Sandberg about her second book in the Lean In series Lean In: For Graduates was a head shaker. Amazing that she of all people allowed Sandberg to restring the same old, same old, shamed, and shopworn feminist myths about women and girls and then jangle it in front of her viewing audience like something new out of the box. Indeed Kelly all but genuflected in front of this woman. Kept her on thru

When President Obama needed a preacher to fulfill the closing prayer duties at the annual White House Easter Prayer Breakfast, he turned to none other than the Episcopal Church’s first openly gay bishop — who said he was as shocked as anyone at the appointment. The Right Rev. Gene Robinson said in a tweet, accompanied by a photo of Mr. Obama behind a podium at the event: “POTUS ‘preaches’ at the Easter prayer breakfast. Then, out of the blue, asks ME to close with prayer. OMG!” Newsmax said he also emphasized that the words he chose to close the breakfast

President Obama pulled a surprise move Monday at the White House’s Easter Prayer Breakfast when he selected Gene Robinson to lead the closing prayer. Robinson is famously known as the first openly gay Episcopal bishop. Talking Points Memo’s Tom Kludt spotted the following tweet from Robinson, who was in attendance: (Tweet) Robinson, 66, became diocesan bishop of New Hampshire in March 2004. He retired in January 2013 and is currently a senior fellow at the progressive

A Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region, a U.S. military official said Monday. In the first public account of the incident, the official said the Russian Fencer flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level. Ship commanders considered the actions provocative and inconsistent with international agreements, prompting the ship to issue several radio queries and warnings. The fighter appeared to be unarmed and never was in danger of
