Meryl Streep calls out Walt

Los Angeles Times, by Oliver Gettell

One of moviedom´s modern icons called out one of Hollywood´s historic heroes Tuesday, as Meryl Streep delivered a sharp rebuke to Walt Disney for alleged sexist and anti-Semitic views at the National Board of Review awards gala in New York. Streep was on hand to present an acting award to Emma Thompson for her portrayal of the prickly British author and "Mary Poppins" creator P.L. Travers in the new film "Saving Mr. Banks," which dramatizes Disney´s efforts to persuade Travers to adapt her books into a musical. (Snip)Streep turned serious and called Disney "a gender bigot," noting that "some of

Disney created his company in the days when one could do so according to one´s own preferences. Knowing how painstaking and lengthy the creation of the multitude of cels one Disney cartoon was, Disney may very well have wanted some assurance that an artist who started a project would be there to finish it. "In the old days" women expected to take time off to have babies and often left work for family reasons.

Meryl is just bitter because she´d be a Disney cartoon witch, instead of a Disney cartoon princess.

I´ve been to Marceline, MO, several times this year, Walt´s home town. I´ve met and spoken with those who knew him, spent so much time in the museum I could give the tour, and sat with my adult sons (Disney fanatics and artsts) underneath Walt´s "Dreaming Tree."

Don´t mess with Walt. We consider him a friend.

FIrst Disney, now Hitchcock. Crazy old white men, who of course, changed the entertainment world.

I´ll take Disney over most CEOs today. The guy actually created something. If he had talented young guys doing a great job--and perhaps had tried women with uneven results--why would you want to change that? His money, his company.

I love the hypocrisy. Ask Ms. Streep if she prefers male or female bodyguards. Male or female pilots for her planes. The best surgeon to work on her heart, which would most likely be a male.

And of course, not to mention taking money from Disney.

In 1938 the landscape for women´s careers was markedly restricted as compared to today. It´s just the way it was. If true, Disney´s statement was simply a comment on the reality of the time, that women were not doing those types of jobs. That meant if a woman wanted to do that type of work they were facing an uphill battle. The ones that were determined persevered and the work landscape eventually changed.

Society does change over time and judging people from 70 years ago by today´s "normal" is unjust and pointless.

Even IF true why bring it up now? Walt was a product of his times and certainly was not alone in his opinions. Of course they were wrong then and are wrong now but we can´t judge the past through the prism of today.

I love listening to Old time radio shows, lots of them, like Jack Benny and Gunsmoke, were sponsored by tobacco companies. When I hear those ads I put them in the context of the times. I KNOW that no self respecting doctor is going to recommend cigarettes to his patients today so there is NO POINT in getting all huffy about it.

I think the company today (actually for the last 20 years now) has become a sleazy nightmare of bigotry and mistreatment of employees. Back in Walt´s day, he treated all his employees well--yes, he was strict and had very set standards which all employees had to meet, but he was fair and hardly a bigot. When the lefty brothers took over (Eisener and Katzenberg) they destroyed the company and all that it stood for. I don´t know anythign about this Iger guy but the whole company went from being a creative force full of artists to becoming a company full of too many middle and upper level managers looking for silly ways to make a quick buck and sacrificing quality for quantity. When the entire crew suddenly all get agents, a new building, then thousands of mid to high level managers suddenly are put in to replace everyone and the artists all get laid off, you have a major problem based in stupidity.

WASHINGTON — Stepping into a heated debate within the nation’s intelligence agencies, President Obama has decided that when the National Security Agency discovers major flaws in Internet security, it should — in most circumstances — reveal them to assure that they will be fixed, rather than keep mum so that the flaws can be used in espionage or cyberattacks, senior administration officials said Saturday. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. How do you ensure that you won’t be ostracized, denounced, or fired if you are a media celebrity, captain of industry, or high public official? For some, sexist banter is certainly no problem. Stand-up comedian Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a c–t and a tw-t, but suffered no ill consequences. David Letterman joked on air that Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter had had sex with Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. There was no downside to that either. President Obama tosses around “sweetie” as he wishes. No problem with that. No one believes Barack could be condescending to women.
