Get the feds out of our gas tanks

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed reducing the amount of ethanol and other biofuels that must be mixed into the nation’s fuel supply. Fuel blenders would be required to use 15.21 billion gallons of biofuel in 2014, down from 16.55 billion gallons last year. That’s a good sign that the EPA finally recognizes the federal mandate for ethanol is creating economic distortions. But the mandate should be cut much more significantly, with the ultimate goal that it be eliminated. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 set benchmarks for a huge increase in the production of domestic biofuels,

Comments:
The rent-seeking biofuel industry was a bad idea and has been a colossal waste. It should be mercifully smothered. Even if your vehicle is flex-fuel (E85 compliant), ethanol, with less than two-thirds the energy content of pure gasoline, is significantly lowering your gas mileage. If you are among the 98% of car owners whose car isn´t flex fuel, ethanol is eating away the innards of your engine and fuel delivery system. As a motor fuel, the noxious stuff ought not to exist.

(continued) Politicians who so thoughtlessly passed the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 are finally realizing that the only ones who support biofuels are farmers and distillers. Everyone else hates the stuff. Because of fertilizer runoff in corn growing areas near the Mississippi River, there is now a huge dead area (8,000 square miles) in the Gulf of Mexico adjacent to the Mississippi delta. Food prices, conveniently left out of government cost of living statistics, have sharply increased in recent years, and a major reason is the ethanol industry. Environmental reasons for biofuels were oversold as well. Tail pipe pollution is no less than it was, and might even be worse. Will anyone on Capitol Hill take a smart pill and start the process of ending the biofuel industry and the entire bogus Green business model?

MIDDLESBORO — Snake-handling preacher Jamie Coots, who never backed away from his beliefs despite derision, criminal charges and excruciating bites, died Saturday night after being bitten by a rattlesnake during a church service. Family members of Coots, 42, refused medical treatment for him. He was pronounced dead about two hours after the rattler sank its fangs into his right hand. His son said the poison overwhelmed his father within minutes of the bite. "It was the quickest snakebite I ever seen in my life," Coots´ son, Cody, said Sunday. Jamie Coots´ death appears to be the first from a snakebite

A giant solar-power project officially opening this week in the California desert is the first of its kind, and may be among the last, in part because of growing evidence that the technology it uses is killing birds. (Snip) BrightSource wants to build a second tower-based solar farm in California´s Riverside County, east of Palm Springs. But the state Energy Commission in December proposed that the company instead use more conventional technologies, such as solar panels or mirrored troughs. One reason: the BrightSource system appears to be scorching birds that fly through the intense heat surrounding the towers, which can

TAMPA — Everything was fine on the roller coaster - at first. Every seat was taken on the Cheetah Hunt ride at Busch Gardens at about 2:30 p.m. The 16 people on board, ranging from teenagers to those in their 70s, braced themselves for the rush that comes with defying gravity. Then, unexpectedly, the ride stopped, with the cars about 60 feet up in the air. The ride operator tried to nudge the cars back to their station, but that didn’t work. To make matters worse, a storm was heading toward the park. For one of the few times in

After a four-week inquiry newspaper Bild reports French investigators have passed their conclusions to the office of investigating prosecutor Patrick Quincy And, sources say, in all likelihood the file will be closed. That means the makers of the equipment Schumacher was using, the manufacturer of the helmet he was wearing and the authorities who put up signage on the slopes around the rocky off-piste slopes near Meribel will effectively be cleared of any involvement in the

A sport-utility vehicle may have driven four miles or more in the wrong direction on Interstate 275 before crashing head-on into a car carrying four University of South Florida fraternity members and killing them. Troopers today were reviewing evidence from the horrific wreck, which also killed the driver of the SUV. Who he is and why he was driving the wrong way early Sunday morning remained unanswered questions. One key to the answers: Which entrance onto the interstate did the driver take to end up going south in the northbound lanes — or did he make a U-turn across the

Then, like a lot of things in politics, things suddenly changed. Bill Young announced his retirement and said he would not run for re-election in 2014. Suddenly, it was a marginal seat for the fall elections. Republicans were in a panic, and the Democrats were salivating. A week later Young passed away, and the seat was a high blip on the political radar screen. Not only is it in play, but it becomes a

There´s a debate going on about Hillary Clinton´s past. If she runs for president in 2016, should Republicans reach back to the scandals of her years as First Lady? Or should they focus on more recent times, especially her tenure as Secretary of State, to build a case against her? The GOP doesn´t have to choose. Of course Clinton´s recent experiences are relevant to a presidential run. But so are her actions in the 90s, the 80s and even the 70s. It´s not ancient history; it reveals something about who Clinton was and still is. And re-examining her past is entirely consistent with practices in recent campaigns. In the 2012 presidential race,

The weirdest thing about John Kerry´s weekend speech on climate-change—other than the fact that this is the same guy who in 1997 voted to forbid the U.S. from signing the Kyoto Protocol—is that it begins by quoting something Maurice Strong said at the U.N.´s 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro: "Every bit of evidence I´ve seen persuades me that we are on a course leading to tragedy." Maurice who? Mr. Strong, a former oil executive from Canada (he was Pierre Trudeau´s pick to run state-owned Petro-Canada in the mid-1970s), was for many years the U.N.´s ultimate mandarin.
