Embattled LA County Sheriff Lee Baca
to retire amid misconduct probe

NBC News, by Andrew Blankstein

Original Article

Posted By:earlybird, 1/8/2014 10:37:51 AM

Embattled Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca announced Tuesday that he will step down from his post at the end of the month and will not run for a fifth term as the county´s top cop later this year because he doesn´t want "a campaign of negative contentious politicking." (Snip) His decision to retire comes weeks after Andre Birotte Jr., the U.S. Attorney for California´s Central District, announced charges against 18 current and former deputies assigned to the Los Angeles County jails in connection with “a wide scope of illegal conduct,” including allegations of unjustified beating of inmates, unjustified detentions

Comments:
The buck was too darn close for comfort. He was sure to be either a defendant or a witness in too many investigations. He has managed to nimbly dodge this bullet for too long and had announced he´d run for a fifth term. Good riddance.

EVEN here in corrupt Cali people were not pleased with the "Friends of the Sheriff" hotline--a special number to call, manned by an employee, to get tickets squashed.

Is this a partisan office? If so, I missed any reference to Sheriff Baca´s party affiliation in article.

Good Riddance.
In California, if you are ticketed for driving without a license and insurance -your car is automatically impounded-unless you are illegal.
Baca gave the illegals a pass while impounding cars of Americans.
The police union objected but he sided with illegals.
Statistically, illegals are more likely to be involved in accidents, some fatal.
In one case an illegal was given a pass.
One month later this same illegal crashed killing herself and two passengers.
Baca´s pandering to illegals was responsible.
Good riddance.

Oddly enough he´s a Republican, though he opposed Prop. 8.
Read also about his "Special Reserves" program. After hearing / reading about it, I have to seriously question the man´s judgment.

Baca has whined incessantly about lack of (taxpayer) funds to properly run his department. But in 2001, here is where his priority lay:

Los Angeles County supervisors are questioning a decision by the Sheriff´s Department to purchase a $2.4-million airplane at the same time the agency says it does not have enough money to ensure adequate medical care for jail inmates.

The 10-seat turboprop is a replacement for an aging Cessna that has been used by the department for years to ferry investigators to remote state prisons, witnesses and suspects to Los Angeles, and the sheriff and other department officials to the state Capitol. The new plane costs about $383 per hour to operate, according to the agency.

http://articles.latimes.com/2001/sep/30/local/me-51695

More from the same article:

The purchase comes when the department is already $25 million over budget. Sheriff´s officials also have informed the Board of Supervisors that the department is at risk of being cited by the federal government for civil rights violations unless it spends more money to improve its medical treatment for inmates.

Supervisors, who say they never were told of the plane until after it was bought, were incensed last week when Baca sent them a letter demanding $5.5 million more to pay for health care for his department´s roughly 20,000 jail inmates.

I don´t want to belittle anyone who has spent decades in law enforcement, but he was running a brutal prison system, failing to enforce the laws against illegals, against legalizing marijuana which suggests he´s in the pay of the cartels, and good riddance to him. His apologetic and modest manner at his retirement conference means he is scared silly, the feds must have the goods on him in no uncertain terms.

WASHINGTON — In the end, the White House solved the most delicate protocol issue of Tuesday’s state dinner for President François Hollande of France in a dignified but creative way. Seated at President Obama’s right under a shimmering white tent on the South Lawn was Thelma Golden, the director of the Studio Museum in Harlem, who 20 years ago mounted a provocative exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art titled “Black Male.” (Snip) To Michelle Obama’s left was Stephen Colbert, the comedian and television host, whose connection to France consists largely in his determination to pronounce his surname as

While the spectacle of the world´s most expensive Olympics, with its inflatable St. Basil´s, technical glitches, unceremonial slip-ups and surreptitious signs of protest, had a global audience captivated, all eyes were on the torch bearers, in particular, gymnast Alina Kabayeva, who also happens to be President Vladimir Putin´s girlfriend. Putin had earlier refuted suggestions that Kabayeva would be afforded the special privilege of wielding the Olympic torch at the opening ceremony. KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia – This time around, the judges gave Sage Kotsenburg the score he deserved. And Kotsenburg gave the United States the first gold medal of the Sochi Games. Kotsenburg, the 20-year-old from Park City, Utah, stomped a 93.5 on his first run of the inaugural Olympic slopestyle contest and watched it hold up in a massive upset. BERLIN — Germans were already smarting from revelations that U.S. intelligence listened in on the phone conversations of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Then came Nulandgate. On Thursday, a video was posted on YouTube in which Victoria Nuland, the top U.S. diplomat for Europe, disparagingly dismissed European Union efforts to mediate the ongoing crisis in the Ukraine by bluntly saying, “F--- the E.U.” On Friday, Merkel, through press attache Christiane Wirtz, described the gaffe as “absolutely unacceptable,” and defended the efforts of Catherine Ashton, the E.U.’s foreign policy chief.

It´s no surprise that Barack Obama´s authoritarian streak is revealing itself at last. It was always there; clearly apparent in his rhetoric (e.g., his envy of Chinese president Xi Jin-ping´s powers), his abuse of executive orders, his threats against Congress, his sultan with fly-whisk attitudes toward his opposition, and even his vacations, which reek more of third-world trash gamboling on the Riviera than any American leader (George W.
