Obama to preview anti-poverty proposals
The Hill [DC], by Justin Sink

President Obama will look to promote economic proposals designed to alleviate blight in some of the nation’s poorest communities at an event Thursday at the White House, according to a source familiar with the event. The president’s remarks are designed to highlight his call to designate so-called “Promise Zones” where the federal government would provide tax incentives, housing assistance, and education grants to fight persistent poverty, and come amid a broader populist push by the White House ahead of the Jan. 28 State of the Union address. White House officials have said Obama plans to lay out his ideas for addressing economic

Yeah ... that´s the way liberals solve problems ... by throwing money at them. That way they don´t have to actually do anything.

As will all communist based programs, things will get worse in these lucky areas. Who, for example, wants to live in a public housing project where you life is in danger 90% of the time? And those have been around for years. The ones that haven´t been torn down, anyway.

Communism is a putrid, festering sore and we all know who is at its center, surrounded and protected by the mainstream media.

An idea that would not cost a dime, ease government restrictions on energy development, approve the XL pipeline, these alone would go a long way towards moving the price of gas to President Bush levels which puts more disposal income into the hands of those who need it most.

According to a recent study by the CATO Institute, despite the government spending $15 Trillion dollars--yes, that is "Trillion"--since Lyndon Johnson´s "War on Poverty" started in 1964, despite that almost too enormous to comprehend expenditure and the resultant cornucopia of programs for "the poor," the poverty rate has essentially remained the same for the last 40 years, except now, with the "goalposts moved," our "poor" almost all have clothing and a roof over their heads, free education and health care, have indoor plumbing, cars, air conditioning, cell phones, and flat screen TVs.

I note, though, that at least some groups have actually prospered as a result of these expenditures and programs, and that a generation or more of politicians, academics, government bureaucrats, social workers, and "community activists and leaders" have made careers and quite a good living off of demanding, proposing, and administering those anti-poverty programs.

Now, any rational person, looking at these dismal results for the "poor," would conclude that these anti-poverty programs have not and do not work, and that all those enormous expenditures and all that energy were for nothing, were wasted. And that, either a certain level of poverty is just normal, intractable, and can never be eliminated, or, if an incurable optimist, that an entirely different approach, targeting different aspects of this problem, has to be tried.

Absent "Necessity"--the wolf at the door--intact strong families and relationships, and what used to be the strong, prevalent "Protestant work ethic"--many people will just not work.

In our increasingly "Post-Christian" society, where that work ethic that was part and parcel of our Judeo-Christian heritage, our early history, and church teaching is getting more and more tenuous, given the ongoing assault against and destruction of what used to be generally pretty stable family structures and relationships, and given a whole host of free goodies handed out by the government that allows tens of millions of people to survive--albeit at a minimal level--millions will just not work when they can while away the time, coast along, and get by, just hanging with their friends, drinking beer, munching chips, and/or sitting in front of the Tube or video game.
