Inside the Turmoil at MSNBC:

The spate of impolitic statements from MSNBC’s liberal-minded hosts in recent months have led many to wonder what, exactly, is going on inside the network. Over on the homepage, I write about the dynamics at play at Rockefeller Plaza, where sources say an executive, Rich Stockwell, is now proofreading the scripts of the network’s daytime hosts before they air. They also say MSNBC president Phil Griffin, who is not an ideologue, is letting primetime star and avowed liberal Rachel Maddow exercise a lot of control. MSNBC is pushing back against the piece, for which I relied heavily on anonymous sources,

U.S. troops prevented from

Washington Times, by Rowan Scarborough    Original Article

The U.S. has inserted 200 troops in Iraq since 2012, but they cannot directly help the Iraqi military repel a surge of al Qaeda fighters, even as the country succumbs to sectarian violence and insurgents claim control of two key cities. On Sunday, at least 20 people were killed in bombings in Baghdad and 34 others in fighting in the western province of Anbar, where Iraqi troops were trying to oust insurgents who had laid claim to the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah. In Jerusalem on a Middle East peace mission, Secretary of State John F. Kerry said the U.S.

In an unprecedented show of opposition to abortion, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is delaying the start of the party’s annual winter meeting so he and other committee members can join the March for Life on the Mall, The Washington Times has learned. Mr. Priebus, a plain-spoken Greek Orthodox lawyer from Wisconsin, will join members of his party’s national committee and thousands of other abortion opponents in the annual right-to-life march scheduled for Jan. 22, the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that declared abortion a constitutional right. “I saw that there was a real interest among a

BEIRUT — Secretary of State John F. Kerry said Sunday that the United States is ready to help Iraq in any way possible as that country began a major offensive to wrest control of two cities from al-Qaeda-linked militants. But he made it clear that no American troops would be sent in. Kerry described the militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, as “the most dangerous players” in the region. But as Iraqi forces launched airstrikes and clashed with the militants in western Anbar province on Sunday, Kerry said it was Iraq’s battle to fight. ISIS, formerly known as al-Qaeda in Iraq but renamed to reflect the group’s growing

The political network spearheaded by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch has expanded into a far-reaching operation of unrivaled complexity, built around a maze of groups that cloaks its donors, according to an analysis of new tax returns and other documents. The filings show that the network of politically active nonprofit groups backed by the Kochs and fellow donors in the 2012 elections financially outpaced other independent groups on the right and, on its own, matched the long-established national coalition of labor unions that serves as one of the biggest sources of support for Democrats. HealthCare.gov defects leave many

More than 100,000 Americans who applied for insurance through HealthCare.gov and were told they are eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) remain unenrolled because of lingering software defects in the federal online marketplace, according to federal and state health officials. To try to provide coverage to these people before they seek medical care, the Obama administration has launched a barrage of phone calls in recent days in 21 states, advising those who applied that the quickest route into the programs is to start over at their state’s Medicaid agency. State officials, meanwhile, are racing to cope

BEIRUT — Syrian rebels battled al-Qaeda-affiliated fighters across northern Syria on Saturday in an attempt to stem the sudden rise in influence of the extremists who have been staging attacks and conquering territory from Baghdad to Beirut. At the same time, Iraqi government forces fought to contain an expanding revolt in the western province of Anbar by Sunni tribes, some of which have linked up with al-Qaeda militants to score significant gains in recent days. The battles on both sides of the border signaled a defining moment for the increasingly entwined conflicts in Iraq and Syria, which have enabled the

Mass shootings like the ones that have occurred in recent years in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., have tripled in recent years, according to a study set to be published next week for the FBI. Researchers looked at active shootings in public settings where the primary motive appeared to be mass murder and at least one victim was unrelated to the shooter, according to Yahoo News, which obtained the report. The study, to be published next week in the “FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin,” a training publication for those in the criminal justice profession, was written by the Advanced Law Enforcement

Maryland lawmakers are expected to pass legislation as soon as next week to assist the hundreds of people — or, possibly, thousands — who tried to sign up for health insurance through the state’s new exchange program, encountered problems and were left uncovered when the new year began. Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) and Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown (D) said Friday that they plan to introduce emergency legislation that would expand enrollment in the Maryland Health Insurance Plan, a separate state-run program that normally covers high-risk individuals. Those enrolled would have to pay a premium, which is determined by income

NAIROBI — The United Nations has dispatched a record number of peacekeepers in Africa in recent years, deploying soldiers to trouble spots such as the Central African Republic and South Sudan. Yet the “blue helmets” and thousands of other soldiers sent by African regional groups have failed to prevent fresh spasms of violence. The peacekeeping forces have cost billions of dollars, largely paid by the United States and European nations. But they have been hobbled by weak mandates and a shortage of manpower and equipment. Some critics also say Washington, its allies and U.N. officials are at fault in the

BEIRUT — A rejuvenated al-Qaeda-affiliated force asserted control over the western Iraqi city of Fallujah on Friday, raising its flag over government buildings and declaring an Islamic state in one of the most crucial areas that U.S. troops fought to pacify before withdrawing from Iraq two years ago. The capture of Fallujah came amid an explosion of violence across the western desert province of Anbar in which local tribes, Iraqi security forces and al-Qaeda-affiliated militants have been fighting one another for days in a confusingly chaotic three-way war. Elsewhere in the province, local tribal militias claimed they were gaining ground

History will record that on the 12th day of his latest Hawaiian vacation, President Obama tweeted about Obamacare. That was one of the president’s few visible acts of official business during his 16-day holiday retreat before he and his family return to Washington on Sunday. The president’s winter recess has rivaled just about anyone’s dream getaway, filled with golf, dinners at high-end restaurants and quality beach time. The president’s aides say he is always on the job, even in the Pacific paradise. Mr. Obama, they said, has received daily presidential briefings — secret guidance culled from intelligence agencies about hot

On Sunday, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney dug into the Affordable Care Act’s roll-out, the contraception mandate which he signed into law in Massachusetts, and the Winter Olympics in Russia. Asked what “bothers” him the most about the ACA roll-out, Romney said that the onerous coverage requirements frustrated him the most. “it’s not just that the president tells people that they have to buy health insurance,” Romney said, “it’s that

Kudos to President Obama for giving his wife a birthday present we all can envy, indeed covet. CBS News reports: President Barack Obama is going to give his wife the birthday present that many parents can only dream of - time off, alone, without the children. The White House said on Saturday first lady Michelle Obama would stay in Hawaii, where the family has been on vacation for the last two weeks, rather than return home with her husband and their two girls. (Snip) Just imagine for a moment if President Obama would agree to leave the rest of us alone. How wonderful would that be? He does have it within his power to make the gift

Obamacare is a flea bitten dog that never would have been enacted without wholesale and deliberate falsehoods said over and over again by Barack Obama and every Democrat cheerleader. It never would have been enacted without legislative sleights-of-hand and backroom bribes offered to key Democrats. It never would have been enacted and Barack Obama would likely not have won a second term without the willing negligence of a toothless “watchdog press” who refused to independently investigate or report obvious lies. Now we will be bitten by this dog and indeed, as many as five million people who have lost insurance (that they

Early last summer in her Georgian-style home near Washington’s Embassy Row, Hillary Clinton met with a handful of aides for a detailed presentation on preparing for a 2016 presidential campaign. Three officials from the Democratic consulting firm Dewey Square Group — veteran field organizer Michael Whouley, firm founder Charlie Baker and strategist Jill Alper, whose expertise includes voter attitudes toward women candidates — delivered a dispassionate, numbers-driven assessment. They broke down filing deadlines in certain states, projected how much money Clinton would need to raise and described how field operations have become more sophisticated in the era of Barack Obama.

A Georgia couple was shocked and disgusted to find a racial slur scrawled on a valet ticket after a night out at a local restaurant. After Candea and Sam Aarons had dinner at the Spondivits restaurant in East Point, Ga., on New Year’s Day, they found that the valet tag still affixed to their key chain had the phrase “jungle fever” written on one side. The phrase is a racial slur for an interracial couple. Candea Aaron said she initially didn’t notice anything unusual in their interaction with the valet, but in previous visits the tag was always removed from their key before they received it back. “I’ve never had their [valet] tag left

New York - Liz Cheney, whose upstart bid to unseat Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi sparked a round of warfare in the Republican Party and even within her own family, is dropping out of the Senate primary, sources told CNN late Sunday. Cheney, the eldest daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, began telling associates of her decision over the weekend and could make an official announcement about the race as early as Monday. Cheney´s surprising decision to jump into the race, an announcement made in a YouTube video last summer, roiled Republican politics in the Wyoming, a state Dick Cheney represented in Congress for five

A U.S. Coast Guard heavy icebreaker will leave Australia for Antarctica on Sunday to rescue more than 120 crew members aboard two icebreakers trapped in pack ice near the frozen continent´s eastern edge, officials said. The 122-meter (399-foot) cutter, the Polar Star, is responding to a Jan. 3 request from Australia, Russia and China to assist the Russian and Chinese ships because "there is sufficient concern that the vessels may not be able to free themselves from the ice," the Coast Guard said in a statement. First Lady Michelle Obama failed to accompany President Obama and their daughters home from Hawaii today, a decision that will likely incur taxpayers at least a couple of hundred thousand dollars in costs. The White House described the move as a “birthday gift” from President Obama to his wife, allowing her to “spend times with friends ahead of her upcoming 50th birthday,” which occurs January 17. But for this gift, you are footing much of the bill. I estimated some costs a year ago when, on their previous vacation to Hawaii, it appeared that Michelle was going to stay in Hawaii

President Obama is pushing back against attempts to rein in the National Security Agency’s electronic intelligence collections, and well he should as commander-in-chief. After one federal judge ruled that the NSA’s collection of so-called telephone metadata was likely unconstitutional even under a special intelligence court’s authority, the administration sought permission from the special court for new action and petitioned to appeal the judge’s hyperventilations. Far more grounded was another court ruling, this one upholding metadata collection. (Snip)Snowden knowingly and brazenly stole vast troves of information that were kept secret for a reason.
